DRAMATURGICAL NOTES

Italian-American CultureDemographics In the 2000 U.S. Census, Italian-Americans constituted the fifth largest ancestry group in America with about 15.6 million people (5.6% of the total U.S. population).

Religion Most immigrants had been Catholics in Italy. Observers have noted that they often became more devoutly Catholic in the United States, since their faith was a distinctive characteristic in the U.S.

Stereotypes in Pop Culture To this day, Italian Americans are unfairly associated with organized crime and New York due to pervasive media stereotyping, seen in popular gangster movies like The Godfather and television series such as The Sopranos.

Food Cannoli (meaning “little tube”) are Italian pastries that originated in Sicily and are a staple of Sicilian and Italian-American cuisine. Cannoli consist of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta.
