I have written a lot of articles over the years for Race Place Magazine so I have decided to condense some of the past information and create a check list that you might want to use. These are things to think about when you are making a purchase:
ShoesA. Your feet get flatter and longer as you are aging so
always try on the shoes for proper fit even though you are buying the same model. Make sure the width feels comfortable on your foot. Most major companies are making widths now so you can get a customized fit.
B.Your feet will swell anywhere from ½ to 1 ½ sizes when you are exercising , so give your self a thumbnail’s extra length from your longest toe to the end of the shoe.
C. Don’t get married to your shoes because shoe companies are always doing updates which change the fit, features and benefits of your favorite model.
D. Shoes that work for your feet should have a natural feel and require very little breaking in time. You should not have to make a major adjustment to a shoe; it should work with your running motion.
E. If you are just starting to use minimalist shoes, give your body a little time to get used to the adjustment in the change of your running form. Do a few short runs so
THE THINGS
YOU SHOULD
KNOW
the new muscle groups you are using don’t get strained.
F. The life of a running shoe with normal use is 6 months or 300 to 500 miles. Normal use is assuming you are running 3 to 4 miles, 3 or 4 times a week. If you are using minimalist shoes or racing flats, the normal life will be about 200 to 300 miles or about 3 or 4 months. If you are running more than 4 days a week, you should be rotating two pairs of shoes. You will find by rotating shoes, you get about 10% longer wear in both pairs. Rotating gives the shoe a chance to rebound and to dry out.
Foot InsertsInserts come in two major types. A functional insert
is the one where you have a custom mold made of your foot to make an orthotic, which changes the way you run or walk. These are prescribed by a Podiatrist, only after a careful examination. A custom orthotic should be checked every 18 to 24 months for fit. The second type of insert is called an accommodative insert. Accommodative inserts can be soft to help absorb shock and supportive to stabilize the foot. The life of accommodative inserts is about a year of normal use. Try these inserts in your shoes at the store to make sure you get a proper fit.
A. Cushion inserts will help your feet absorb shock when you are running on harder surfaces. Concrete sidewalks are about 10 times harder than asphalt so select softer shoes and cushion inserts when you are running mainly on concrete. Cushion inserts are designed for someone with a higher arch.
B. Supportive inserts are designed for someone with a flatter foot that tends to roll in or to pronate. Support inserts range from being lightly supportive to very supportive, approaching a functional orthotic. Try on any insert you are about to buy and walk around the store to make sure it is giving you the support you want.
Hopefully, these tips are useful and will make you a more informed buyer.

TRIATHLONSTampa Bay
Welcome Triathlete,This page is to inform you of local triathlons in the Tampa Bay areathat are over 6 years old and had a proven record of quality andperformance through out the years. The races we listed we feel whenchoosing a triathlon to do must meet certain criteria of quality andhistoric perspective and must be Tampa Bay exclusive.
In putting together these historic triathlons we will be adding somethingnew, local triathlete ranking in age divisions. each race will award 5 pointsfor first, 4 for second and 3 for third, 2 for 4th and 1 point for 5th place.
Tampa Bay Triathlons will keep tallies of points via Florida RacePlace Magazine,bi-weekly eblast and our new website which will be coming online January 1st.We will also send out updates on other Classic Tampa Bay Triathlons 2013.
Another feature will be that we will also have a Facebook page as wellas our twitter line. A special 813-417-0324 or [email protected] line will also be setup so changes and corrections can be addressed quickly.
Support of these local triathlons are a must to see them grow and improvewith time well into the future.

“YOUR RUNNING SHOES ARE TOO SMALL!”
Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPED
It’s true, and now that I’m back on my seasonal marathon expo, race and store event tour, I continue to see al-most 70% of runners wearing shoes that are too small or not put on properly. Really, if I did have a nickel for every time I’ve heard “But I never worn that size before!”...“I’ve always worn a (choose your size)!”...”I’ll trip over them!”...”They look like boats!”...”That’s impossible”...”I like them tight!”...”They’ll slip off my foot!”, I might be rubbing shoulders with Warren Buffett right now. My usual comeback is “Do you know that ears, noses and feet are the only appendages that keep growing all of our lives?” The average is +2½ sizes (for feet) during our adult life. So far, since my early 20’s, my shoe size has gone up 4 sizes and a full width…and I’ve never even been pregnant! Yes, pregnancy and weight-gain are two main culprits in in-creased shoe size. Conversely, and happily to some, losing excess weight may actually help to decrease your shoe size.
Proper shoe fit when buying your running shoes in the morning (up to about 2:00 p.m.) should include about a thumb’s-width between your longest toe and the end of the inside of the shoe. After 2:00, half a thumb’s-width will do. Next, check that you can pinch some material on top of the front of your foot. This will insure that the width of your shoe is appropriate. My estimate is that almost 25% of runners should be in a wider shoe.
You may ask “Why do I need that much room? Here’s the explanation. Note that when standing in your new shoes, each foot is responsible for half your body weight. So, if you weigh 200 lbs., this means you have 100 lbs. on each foot. But, while running, you realize up to 4X your entire body weight on each foot, each time it comes crashing to the ground. We progress from 100 lbs. standing to as much as 4X200, or 800 lbs. running on each foot. Guess what that causes? Yep, all that weight elongates it and spreads it out. Your toes come very close to the end of the shoe and that pinch of material on top is now gone – setting the foot up perfectly for an efficient toe-off.
Three exceptions would be: a runner with a very high-arch and stiff foot (this foot does not spread out); a runner wearing orthotics (minimizing elongation and spreading of foot); and/or a runner not properly putting on his or her shoes. Because most haven’t been instructed just how to put their shoes on properly, here’s the secret – kick your heels back and “lock them in” and then lace your shoes. This will help eliminate your foot migrating inside, potentially causing “toe bang” and other issues such as hot spots, blisters, calluses and some instability. And you may be able to get by with a half-size smaller. Note that walkers can usually be fit with a half thumb’s-width because they are only coming down with 1-2X body weight.
Some common physical issues with shoes that are too short or tight can be: black toenails, blisters, calluses or hot spots especially on the ends or under the last few toes or outside of the foot, hammer toes, burning or calluses under the forefoot, general forefoot pain, neuroma, foot numbness, pain on top of the foot, outside ankle, outside leg or hip.
Hopefully this helps you to better understand how a running shoe should fit and explain some reasons behind it – all to help you experience more comfortable, pain-free running.
If you are uncertain of your shoe fit or have any ache or pain issues, stop by the Brooks/Feet First booth at the Gasparilla Expo. Let’s see if we can figure it out.

Let the 2013 season begin!! For those of you who haven’t yet raced in 2013, the traditional launch of the 2013 multisport season is nearly here, with the packed April calendar including the ever popular Escape from Fort Desoto, and the 30th anniversary edition of the St. Anthony’s Triathlon at the end of the month. For those training for St. A’s, I encourage you to sign up soon for both it and Escape, which is always a good “tune up” for the Olympic distance event. Congrats are in order to Susan Haag, a St. Pete Mad Dog mem-ber from Jacksonville, Florida, who was appointed to succeed me on the USATriathlon National Board of Directors, representing the Florida Region. Susan is the only female member of the board. I encourage everyone to give her your help and support; with nearly 40% of the USAT membership female, additional female involvement in gov-ernance is needed. For any woman having an interest in getting in-volved, there are a myriad of committees and activities that can prepare and enhance your leadership qualities. Although I am no longer on the USAT Board, I encourage any-one who has positive suggestions about how USAT can help you in your multisport endeavors to give me your ideas and thoughts. I’ll be announcing many of the area races, and am always available before, during, or after races to speak with you. In my six years on the Board, I learned both how important USAT is to our sport, and also how the positive benefits to the athlete have not been clearly communicated to the athletes. I can assure you that those at the national office care deeply about the athlete, are constantly finding additional meaningful benefits for the members. Please feel free to make suggestions to Su-san, as your representative. Finally, go on the USATriathlon website regularly. There is a plethora of information available for you, if you wish to benefit from it. Please race and train safe. I’ll see you at the upcoming Escape from Fort Desoto and St. Anthony’s races. Remem-ber, this year is a huge one for St. A’s, there are very few races nation-ally that have been in existence for 30 years. If you haven’t registered yet, do so now.
