Circuit Judge Hale Stancil to retire after 33

years

Published: Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at 10:22 a.m.

Circuit Judge Hale Stancil will retire Dec. 31,

after wielding the gavel for 33 years.

His retirement was announced by the Fifth

Judicial Circuit.

Stancil served as a Marion County judge from

January 1983 to December 1993. He was

appointed by Gov. Lawton Chiles to the circuit

bench in November 1993 and began his tenure

in January 1994.

“Judge Stancil has served the people of the Fifth Judicial Circuit with integrity and

steadfast devotion to his duties for many years,” said Don Briggs, the circuit’s chief

judge in a news release. “He has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues

and other members of the court system. His retirement means that we have a huge

void to fill in terms of experience, but more so in terms of wisdom and

understanding.”

Stancil currently handles felony and foreclosure cases and presides over drug court.

Circuit Judge David Eddy, who serves as administrative judge in Marion County,

called Stancil an “exemplary judge” who is respected and held to the “highest

esteem” by both members of the judicial system and legal community.

“It has been a personal honor and privilege to have served as a fellow Circuit Court

Judge with Judge Stancil,” said Eddy in the release. “When he retires, his wisdom

and experience on the bench will be greatly missed.”

In 1968, Stancil received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida

and earned his law degree in 1973 from Stetson University before venturing into

private practice. He served in the Marine Corps from 1969 to 1971.
