“Sailing from History to the Future”

Page 5: FLORIDA

The great success that followed the research, development and multidisciplinary diffusion carried out during the great deed of a round-the-world trip sailing in a replica of a 16th century ship (Nao Victoria Project 2004-2006), encouraged a group of promoters, commanded by D. Juan Miguel Salas Tornero and supported by institutions such as the Spanish Government, the Autonomous Government of Andalusia and the Businessmen's Association to continue the work already underway.

The Nao Foundation is a non-profit entity which main aim is to continue with the research projects and to spread awareness of heritage, science, history and maritime culture across the world.

The Foundation has a high experience in historical ships and it is engaged with the spreading and the appreciation of the maritime history and its heritage. More than a dozen of historical sailing or non-sailing ships have been built; more than 70.000 traveled miles with the sailing ones; more than 25 countries of 4 continents visited; and more than 9 million visitors received are a clear evidence of the professionalism, rigor and guaranteed success that you can get from Nao Victoria Foundation in these kind of projects.

Page 17: FLORIDA

Received globally more than 2,160,000 visitors during the Seville Expo 92

The sailing started on European waters on the 2nd of August, 1990.

After visiting 18 ports in Spain, they stopped at Marseille and Cannes on the French coasts, then Genoa in Italy, and finally Lisbon, Portugal. On October 1991 commenced the Atlantic crossing, departing from Huelva. After stopping at the Canary Islands, and once at the Caribbean Sea, the caravels visited three Dominican Republic ports, another three in Puerto Rico, two more in the Virgin Islands and San Salvador in Bahamas. The caravels were received at 14 different cities along the North American shores, and another four on the Mexican gulf. The expedition ended on September, 1992.

Once they were back to the Seville EXPO 92, the caravels proved to be, along with the Nao Victoria, some of the most popular attractions, receiving globally more than 2,160,000 visitors.

Both Boats will depart from Spain and they will cross the Atlantic Ocean to reach Puerto Rico, where Juan Ponce de León began his expedition, and then continue the crossing to the coasts of Florida.

The nao and the Galleon will be considered of an extraordinaire interest and a great attraction at every port, because of his unmistakable figure and his status as diplomatic vessel. Promotional events, public visits, communication and media events and institutional acts will be organised at the different ports.

During the long ocean crossings, the Nao and Galleon will develop an important activity program of scientific research and social nature. There will be studies and projects to be carried out on the following areas: Marine Environment, Biodiversity, and Environmental Sciences.

During the voyage, TV recording devices could follow up the journey onboard the two boats, conducting workshops on various aspects of the history of these voyages: diet, sailing exercises, life onboard, health, etc…
