FERNEY SPINNING MILLSFerney Spinning Mills is a modern woolen yarn producer that manufactures classic, fashion and

technical yarns for the knitwear and weaving industries. Created in 1978, the company was initially

set-up to supply Floreal Knitwear. Being a fully vertical operation, the company, today, supplies

knitwear companies in Europe, Asia and Africa and works directly with retailers around the world.

Ferney has a purpose-built R&D section that can produce new yarns from design ideas within 48

hours. This dedicated R&D team works continuously on the creation of new blends and yarns.

THE COTONU TRADE AGREEMENT

The Cotonu Trade Agreement gives our Mauritius &

Madagascar production unlimited duty-free access to the

European Union (EU) market.

The production from Bangladesh also gives duty freeaccess to the European market.

AGOA

The African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) is a

trade agreement between the US and Sub-Saharan Africa,

voted in May 2000. It provides Duty and Quota free access

to the US market for apparel made in eligible Sub-Saharan

African countries. Mauritius & Madagascar both qualify.

With US & EU duties 18% & 12.5% respectively, the AGOA

importers of textile goods from this region.

NATURAL & LUXURIOUSMERINOSoft, fine wool from the first shearing of a lamb, usually when it is about seven months old. Soft and

elastic when spun, Australian Merino wool has many natural benefits including; durability, breathability,

soft handle, excellent drape and comfort. Merino remains the fibre of choice for top-of-the-range knitwear.

WOOL

Machine Wash / Total Easy Care

Pure wool and wool blend garments carrying the TotalEasy Care or Machine Washable label can be machine

laundered without any undue loss of shape or appearance,

shrinkage or colour change.

Quick Dry Merino

The Quick Dry Merino finish is applied to either knittedgarments or fabrics during the final wet finishing stage.

Wool already has a natural fast-drying ability compared

to garments made from man-made fibres, and this

technology further reduces the drying time of garments

by up to three times. This saves time for the consumer,

is more convenient and saves energy by reducing theneed for tumble drying.

Non-Museled Wool

An alternative to museling which is a painful procedure that

is performed on merino sheep in most parts of Australia.

This practice is aimed at reducing the risk of infestation by

the blowfly, known as ‘’flystrike’’. In sheep not treated for

flystrike, the blowfly may lay its larvae in the skin folds in their

hind quarters, which offer an ideal breeding ground. This

can lead to suffering and even death. Ferney Spinning Mills

has today secured sources of non-museled fibres and also

works closely with producers and AWI to find animal-friendlytreatments.

AUSTRALIAN MERINO

Renewable and biodegradable, Australian Merino wool

offers all the benefits of a luxury fibre, whilst being

produced in a natural and sustainable farming. Australian

Merino’s naturally elastic, superfine fibres allow for total

mobility and stretch; creating sheer, soft knitwear with

unsurpassed natural drape and luxurious comfort.

Merino is the world’s most versatile and technically

dynamic natural fibre. Offering superior performance,

comfort, and quality in all conditions; it has a high level of

in-built UV protection and contains natural breathability

qualities while offering protection against the heat and cold.

It is also water repellent, fire resistant, resists static and ismore durable than most other fibres.

Australian Wool Innovation Ltd.

Floreal Knitwear has worked closely with the AWI - thekey research, development, and marketing body working

on behalf of Australian woolgrowers - to ensure the

selection of only the highest quality fibres to be spun by

FSM into luxuriously performing yarn.

PIECEDYEINGPiece dyeing through innovative processes among which Pigment Dye, Tropical Dye and Dye

Attract-resist have opened avenues to fabulous innovative looks and handfeels. Garment dyeing

route also offers flexibility and reactivity for last minute color input at retail level.

PIGMENT DYE

Pigment dye on cotton garments is a special process

done by Floreal Knitwear Lab. This dyeing tecnique creates

variation in shades through the same dye bath giving the

product personality and unique uneveness. Each garment

is engineered to fade during wearing and washing for a

truly raw and organic finish.

TROPICAL DYE

A fabulous technique expressing intense color freedomand creating a sophisticated powdered look. More than

36 shades inspired by nature

Plant-inspired palette (Mousse, Maize, Orange Brulée,

Eggplant, Verdé, Truffle, Bleuet) combines with deep

patinated neutrals (Capuccino, Khaki, Ocean, Gris Foncé,

Cloud, Blacky) and blends with radiant tones (Buzzy, Lupin,

Touareg, Marine) reflecting the Tropical lanscape.

Fair Trade Labelling

Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) has

become the main worldwide body certifying that

products meet fair trade principles and pledges that its

process is “transparent, independent, [and] competent.”

Fair Trade has made mainstream business more aware

of its social and environmental responsibility.

Organisations like FLO, Max Havelaer and helvetas are

working on cotton issues. All these initiatives could lead

to a boost of the organic and fair trade cotton market

over the forthcoming years.

Fair Trade Production

Mauritius is a member of SADC & COMESA and Floreal

Knitwear Ltd, a 100% mauritian owned group, is

commited to the spirit of Fair Trade in the region. Thus

we have immediately reacted to the growing interest in

the Fair Trade cotton and are now able to produce Fair

Trade garments. We indeed offer various facilities namely

Piece Dyeing, using pigment and classic methods of

dyeing. In addition we also keep raw white cotton yarn in

stock ready for process.

The Fair Trade movement today is a global movement. Fair Trade is becoming increasingly

successful. Over a million small-scale producers and workers are organized in as many as 3,000

grassroots organizations and their umbrella structures in over 50 countries in the South. Their

products are sold in thousands of World-shops or Fair Trade shops, supermarkets and many other

sales points in the North and, increasingly, in sales outlets in the Southern hemisphere.



The aim of the standard is to define requirements to

ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the

raw materials, processing, manufacturing, packaging,

labelling, exportation, importation and distribution of all

natural fibres. The final products may include, but are

not limited to fibre products, yarns, fabrics and clothes.

Organic Product Standards

- Avoidance of synthetic chemical inputs and genetically

modified organisms- Use of farmland that has been free from chemicals

for a number of years

- Maintaining strict physical separation of organic

products from non-certified products

- Undergoing periodic on-site inspections

- Keeping detailed written production and sales records

In other parts of the world Organic Farming is called

Biological farming or Ecological farming. Farmers are

committed to long term sustainable farming practices.

There is at present no regulation on organic products

applicable world-wide : Certification standards for

producers of organic agricultural products vary,

especially in response to regional differences, although

there are general underlying concepts involving a set of

production standards for growing, storage, processing,

packaging and shipping.
