Etymology

3Flora3 comes from the 4atin name of Flora, the goddess of plants, #o5ers, and

fertility in 1oman mythology.

Flora classications

Plants are grouped into #oras based on region, period, special environment, or

climate. 1egions can be geographically distinct habitats like mountain vs. #atland.

Floras can mean plant life of a historic era as in fossil ora. 4astly, #oras may be

subdivided by special environments6

• Native ora. The native and indigenous #ora of an area.

• Agricultural and horticultural ora (garden ora). The plants that are

deliberately gro5n by humans.

• Weed ora. Traditionally this classi!cation 5as applied to plants regarded as

undesirable, and studied in e7orts to control or eradicate them. Today the

designation is less often used as a classi!cation of plant life, since it includes

three di7erent types of plants6 5eedy species, invasive species (that may or

may not be 5eedy), and native and introduced non$5eedy species that are

agriculturally undesirable. 8any native plants previously considered 5eeds

have been sho5n to be bene!cial or even necessary to various ecosystems.
