woesPETALING Jaya Utara Member of Parliament Tony Pua has
writtento the Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk
Douglas
Uggah Embas and Drainage and Irrigation Department
(DID)director-general Datuk Ahmad Husaini Sulaiman on measures
totake to resolve flash floods in Kampung Cempaka in Petaling
Jaya.
In the letter, he said the authorities should mend and
strengthen theriver bank as well as widen and deepen the riverbed
to ensure that itcan contain the increasing volume of water in the
river.
He also stated that there was land erosion when one of the river
banks built by the DID collapsed. These problems have been goingon
for years but no effective measures were taken.

woesHe said overdevelopment was one of the causes for the
floods.There should be alternative ways to channel the river water.
There
are many upcoming developments in the area, said Pua at a
pressconference in Kampung Cempaka.He said that he would also raise
the issue in Parliament.Prior to the flood, I surveyed the Kayu Ara
river with DID officers butwhen I raised the matter, the DID
department said they lack funds.
Damansara Utama assemblyman Dr Cheah Wing Yin echoed
Puassuggestions at a press conference at his service centre in
SS2.A working committee has been formed to come up with solutions
tothe Kampung Cempaka flood.

illegaloperators along the river bank, set up an emergency
volunteer
squad and implement an early warning system.
The illegal operators who park their lorries along the river
bank arecausing erosion and silting and disrupting the river
flow.
We have issued them with an order to move out before but
theyhave returned. We will work with the enforcement team to
chasethem away, said DID officer Nasaruddin Othman.

alertrelevant authorities such as DID officers, state assemblymen
andthe villagers once the water levels exceed a certain level.Cheah
also said an emergency volunteer squad would be set upsoon to help
during floods and other natural disasters.The squad, which will
mainly consist of villagers of KampungCempaka, will be trained by
the Fire and Rescue Department so thatthey would be equipped with
skills to help.MBPJ councillor Cynthia Gabriel, who is the
councillor for KampungCempaka and a member of the councils
infrastructure committee,said infrastructure should be made a
priority.

overdevelopment.Developers must take into account aspects such as
flooding, trafficand drainage, she said.
