FLOOD WARNING SERVICEThe Waikato region has 20 large rivers and about 1400 small river
systems. Flooding frequently occurs due to steep headwaters and
high rainfall areas that drain into low gradient flood plains.
Waikato Regional Council provides a flood warning service for
landowners and communities potentially affected by floodwater.
The primary aim of this service is to provide sufficient warning so
people can take reasonable steps to protect themselves and their
property. The warning service is to supplement and not replace
expected vigilance and situational awareness required in flood
prone areas.
The council electronically monitors river levels to track how quickly
they react to weather events. When rivers reach a nominated level,
an SMS or email alert is sent to anyone in the area who has signed
up for alerts. Emergency services, including civil defence, are also
notified.
WHO SHOULD SUBSCRIBE TO THE FLOOD WARNING SERVICE?To find out if your property is flood prone, request to see your
property's land information memorandum (LIM) from your
local district or city council. This report will state any known
hazards affecting the property. Broadscale flood hazard maps are
also available on the Waikato Regional Council website,
www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/broadscalefloodinfo. These provide
an overview of the flood hazards for many water bodies and may
help you to identify potential flooding issues that require further
discussion and investigation.
SIGNING UP FOR THE FLOOD WARNING SERVICEEmail [email protected] to sign up for the
flood warning service or freecall 0800 800 401 and ask for the
senior emergency management officer (EMO).
RIVER LEVEL AND RAINFALL IN-FORMATIONThe Waikato Regional Council website provides additional data
and information on flood risks.
You can view the latest rainfall, river level and flow rates for your
area and use our interactive graphs to see current and past levels.
Updated situation reports also provide an overview of the region’s
river and rainfall levels. During a flood event, these reports are
produced more frequently to keep you up to date.
