CSIROCENTRAL INFORMATION

LIBRARY AND EDITORIAL SECTION

APPOINTMENT OF OFFICER-IN-CHARGEThe Executive of CSIRO invites applications

for the position of Officer-in-Charge of thenewly formed Central Information, Library andEditorial Section. The functions of the Section,as set out below, are to be developed to in-clude research in related fields.

CSIRO, a Government instrumentality, is the

largest scientific research organization inAustralia. Its research embraces a wide rangeof scientific and technological activities di-rected to the advancement of Australia's pri-mary and secondary industries and to themaintenance and development of Australia'sresources. The Organization's total annual

budget is in excess of $A80 million and it has

a total staff of 6500 located in laboratories

and field stations throughout Australia.

CSIRO's statutory functions include a broadcross section of "information science" and

what has been described recently as "infor-

matics," the collection, processing, retrieval, and dissemination of information related to

scientific and technical matters and the pub-lication of scientific and technical reports, pe-riodicals, and papers. The Organization has a

substantial library and information service

based in Melbourne, and decentralized operat-ing groups in each of its major laboratories.

It also has a group in Melbourne concerned

with editorial and publication services.

The central library and information services

are concerned primarily with meeting the

needs of CSIRO's scientific staff, but also

assist in the application of research for the

Australian community by the dissemination of

scientific and technical information.

The collected library holdings located at the

Central Library and research centers total in

excess of 1 million volumes excluding pam:-phlets and material held in microform. The

largest and most important segment of the

collection is 20,000 serial titles. In addition to

library and translation services, the Central

Library and Information Service provide cur-

rent awareness, SDI and other information

services based on a number of international

computer-based abstracting services and on

CSIRO research work.

The Editorial and Publications Service pub-

lishes the eight Australian Journals of Scien-

tific Research, as well as a variety of other

scientific and technical publications. It has

extensive printing facilities.

It has been decided that these activitiesshould be regrouped into one Section com-

prising the existing three major operational

units headed by the Manager, Information'Service, the Chief Librarian and the Editor-in-

Chief. In addition to its operational activities, the new Section will undertake research into

aspects of information storage, retrieval, and

dissemination necessary to improve the acces-

sibility and use of scientific and technical

knowledge. The appointee will be responsible to the

CSIRO Executive for the coordination and de

velopment of these operational units, for the

development, planning, and carrying out of a

research program and for liaison with interac-

tive bodies in Australia and overseas having

similar interests. The staff of the new Section, totaling ap-

proximately 130, including librarians, scien-

tists, editors, information officers, and generaisupport staff, could be expanded to include

research scientists. The Section has access as

required to an Australia-wide computing net-

work centered on a CYBER 76 operated by the

Organization's Division of Computing Research.

Applicants for the position of Officer-in-

Charge should have had proven research ex-

perience in information science or a scientificdiscipline related to the Organization's overall

scientific programs and preferably experiencein at least one of the broad areas encom-

passed by the Section.

Appointments to the Organization are nor-

mally made for an indefinite period. However,

tenure for this position is subject to negotia-tion. Salary for the position will not be less

than $A18,175 per annum, but salaries are

currently under review.Persons interested in the position should

write to the Secretary (Administration), Head

Office, CSIRO, P.O. Box 225, Dickson, Canberra,

A.C.T., 2602 Australia, from whom further de-

tails can be obtained.

Applications should contain a resume of

qualifications and experience, the names of

at least two referees, and should be received

at the above address by 30 November 1973.
