It still amazes me that the modus operandi of most motocross fitness conditioning programs still tend to gravitate toward old school training techniques that everyone can do the same thing and get the same re-sults. Sure, there are plenty of old school training exercises like push-ups that are quite effective in building muscle. When it comes to aerobic conditioning? Who can argue that suicide sprints are effective or ineffective for increasing an athlete’s cardio-vascular endurance? But more to the point is this: simply putting together a workout that can kick someone’s butt does not constitute an effective workout. In fact, it can cause a whole lot of unnecessary pain and inju-ry; even for the young individ-ual in the “prime of their life”. They might be able to “recover” quicker, but the lasting wear and tear eventually catches up. Reaching back to what your coach’s coach did when he/she was in high school, “The way we’ve always done it”, is built upon antiquated thinking. It is important to recognize that this “one size fits all” approach doesn’t take into account the specific requirements necessary in designing a safe and effective exercise program for each individual.

“Why should I pay a trainer to help me do what I can do myself?” This “do-it-yourself” approach leaves many talented athletes in a mess. Much like the home-owner who decides to take the “do-it-yourself” approach to save money and begins to gut his bathroom and remodel. Simply reading a few books, watch-ing a few videos and combining that with the “way we did it back in the day” does not make for a safe and effective fitness program. Can one just read a recipe, watch the Food Network and then improvise with whatever is in the kitchen cupboard and expect it to measure up to Chef Ramsey? No. But isn’t this exactly what many individuals do with their own fitness pro-grams? They put together their own workout recipe. Your body is not a kitchen to improvise in. You can’t just throw away what you’ve done and simply just start over each time you make a mistake. Often the body (and mind) pay the consequences. Similarly, implementing a professional fitness program requires professional ability.

So what are the pre-requisites for designing a safe, effective, indi-vidual motocross fitness/nutrition/training program? First and foremost, know the difference between professional training and “do it yourself”. Don’t assume that your coach or the star athlete knows enough to get the job done. A professional trainer has taken the time to educate him or herself in several areas of Exercise Science. These areas include: exercise physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, applied kinesiology and nutrition. Health screening, testing and evaluation are other tools that a professional trainer will use. Any professional trainer understands that regardless of a client’s fitness level, specific principles and meth-ods are required for designing a safe and effective program that gets results. It is also important to remember that safe and effective fitness

programs should be individualized. One size DOES NOT FIT ALL! Even program-ming for the average “healthy adult” re-quires a trainer to adapt and modify exercis-es for various ages and body types. A good trainer keeps a keen eye on a client’s form as they execute each specific movement. A professional trainer is also skilled in assess-ing a client’s varying health conditions and injuries. A good trainer also understands how to address specific “exercise related concerns” for each special population. The high school athlete trains differently than the middle-aged dad who suffers from arthritis, is overweight, works 9-5 but still wants to ride.

As a trainer with over 25 years in exercise physiology, sports medicine, athletic training and personal training fields I empathize with those of you who struggle getting past the price of hiring a personal trainer. I am one who approaches many projects with a “do it yourself” mentality. Yes, the money is a factor but so is my pride; “I CAN DO THIS!” Now as I approach being “48 years old” I value more than ever what wisdom and experience brings to the table. I now appreciate that in many instances the job turns out better when I make the financial commitment to hire a professional.

Innovation Training Systems would be glad to help you in your fitness and nutrition

needs. I personalize each program for that riders needs with options for weight training, cardiovascular exercises, nutrition, flexibility, prac-tice routines, personal nutrition shopper(Great for mom’s and Dad’s to), sports medicine services and our track days filled with riding and education.

TRAINING CAMP

FLMX: Kyle Chisholm, how are you feeling?CHIZ: I’m feeling better and better each day! Not back to 100% yet but just working hard in the gym and at physical therapy to get my leg stronger and back to normal. Feels good, though, to be back in the gym, working out, and making progress on the recovery!

FLMX: Let’s catch everyone up first of all. How did you get hurt and what was the extent of the injury?CHIZ: I got hurt at the St. Louis SX. I crashed over one of the big triple jumps on about lap 2 when Matt Goerke cross jumped the triple when someone in front of him didn’t jump it. We collided mid-air which resulted in me being ejected off my bike and landing on my feet, which as you know is pretty far and high on a triple. Just as I hit the ground my bike hit me in the back which didn’t help anything out! At first, while on the track, I was having some burning/tingling in my legs and a little trouble feeling them. So it was a little scary at first but they got me to the hospital and did a lot of tests and determined my back and spine was all ok and I just had a bad “stinger” most likely from the bike hitting me in the back. I flew home to see my doctor (Dr. Augustine) and we determined I broke my left leg just above my ankle which caused my ankle to be slightly displaced and tore my PCL, meniscus, and a partial MCL tear in my left knee. I also had a couple torn muscles in my left leg on my hamstring and quads. On my right ankle I had a couple torn ligaments but nothing that needed to be operated on. So I had surgery to put a plate & screws in my left leg and an operation to fix my left knee.

FLMX: It seems like the injury ended up being worst and then had even more problems and more unrelated health problems! Talk about some bad luck. What all happened after the original injury?CHIZ: Yea well the injury has just been tough and taken a little longer than expected due to all the trauma all on my left leg. It definitely makes rehab take longer dealing with 2 injuries on one leg! We weren’t worried about the muscle tears in my leg at first but due to being immobilized and in a wheelchair for almost 2 months I had a lot of scar tissue build up in my knee and leg which was causing a big lack of range of motion in my knee. Because of that I had to get my knee just cleaned up to remove scar tissue

(nothing had to be repaired again) and also manipulated (bending/straightening) while I was put to sleep. That was a big help to get-ting my movement in my knee back and I’ve since been getting a lot of massage and acupuncture in my knee/leg which has helped get me almost back to normal movement. Now I’m getting into the final phases of strengthening my leg and getting my balance back to 100% before I return to riding! To add to all my injuries and everything, I had bad stomach pains back between the 2 operations I had on my knee and had to go to the hospital for it. I found out there I had 2 large kidney stones that couldn’t pass through and I had to have surgery to remove the stones which resulted in being in the hospital for 3 days. I’m 100% recovered from that but it was not fun! Haha. Looking back, over an 8-9 week period I had 4 surger-ies! (2 knee, 1 leg, & kidneys).

FLMX: How much longer until your healthy and can start rid-ing again?CHIZ: Well, like I said, I’m just getting into the final stages of rehab which is strengthening my leg muscles and getting my balance back to normal. You wouldn’t think it but it’s very important because you lose a lot of strength & balance when you off your leg for almost 3 months! I normally weigh about 170-172 and I was down to about 150 at one point! 20 pounds is a lot for me because I’m pretty lean at 170 so I lost a lot of muscles overall on my body so I’m working hard to not only get my leg strong but my whole body. As for my injuries I’m 100% healed but I won’t start riding until my leg and body are back to 100%. No sense in rushing it when I’ve already missed most of the season!

FLMX: What’s the plan for the rest of 2013?CHIZ: Right now I’m not really sure what the rest of my year looks like. First I want to get myself back to where I was before the injury and back on the bike and then we’ll see how I’m feeling. I don’t really have a team to go to when I start riding but Yamaha has been awesome to me and gave me my 2 bikes from the previous team (Velocity3) so I have them ready to go for me. If I’m feeling good on the bike before the season ends and I can make it to one of the last nationals then I will. But I won’t go back out until I’m 100%.

FLMX: Lets talk about the start of the season. Your joined forces with a new start up team on Yamahas and it didn’t exactly pan out. What happened over there in the land of empty promises?CHIZ: Yea the start of the year was a bit of a mess! I was pumped to be back on the Yamaha’s and have support from Ya-maha because I really like that bike but the team kind of just fell apart before it even got started unfortunately! We had some good guys on the team that I’m still on good terms with but unfortunately the person funding the team never really came through! It was a huge struggle that not many people really knew about but we did the best we could with what we were dealt and had! We were still doing decent, making every main event, and improving weekly but by around the Dallas round everything was falling apart. Fortunately for me, that’s when a great opportunity to switch over to the JGR Yamaha team came up!

18 FLMX MAGAZINE JULY 201318 FLMX MAGAZINE JULY 2013

FLMX: After you finally got out of that deal you stepped in for Josh Grant at JGR Yamaha and was able to ride a few races. How was the bike and team?CHIZ: Yea it was unfortunate that Josh got hurt but for me it was perfect timing with the old team coming to an end! Unfortunately I only got to ride the JGR bike about a week because of me getting hurt but it was an awesome experience to ride for such a great team like them! The bike was by far the best bike I’ve ever ridden. Just all-around in every aspect it was awesome and better than any other bike I’ve ridden! And all of the guys on the team were really fun, easy and nice to work with! I spent one week in North Carolina and it was great to ride up there and test with those guys! They’re shops and all the tech-nology the have with the NASCAR side of things is incredible! And I have a huge respect for the way Joe and Coy run their programs! Every Monday for Mx and Wednesday for NASCAR they have a bible study/church and lunch for any employees that want to come! They have a great outlook on everything and would like to thank them for the opportunity to work with them!

FLMX: Yamaha just revealed the new 2014 YZF450. Are you excited to try out the new bike?CHIZ: The new Yamaha 450f looks awesome! I’m really excited to get back on my bike but I’m just as excited to ride the 2014 bike! I believe they based some of the changes around what JGR did with the bike like the shrouds/gas tank and the FMF wrap around pipe which I thought were all great improve-ments! So I’m really looking forward to the new bike!

FLMX: What would you like to do for next year? How hard is it going to be to find a ride with more top guys moving up and less rides being available?CHIZ: Well I definitely want to get back to where I was and even better for next year! I’ve always been a top 10 guy and I don’t see any reason I can’t keep improving and doing better even with some of the younger guys coming up! I feel like I’ve learned a lot over the years racing and I just continue to learn more every day! I’m 25 years old so I feel like I should be in a great part of my career with hopefully some more good years left in me to be competitive! I’m not sure where I’ll end up or who I’ll be riding for next year yet but I’m working on it and have some things in the works that hopefully pan out!

FLMX: Getting away from MX. How is the family and wife?CHIZ: We’re all doing good! Definitely have to thank Britney for helping me get through this injury! It’s probably been one of, if not, the hardest injury to go through for me! But we’re doing great! Mom and Dad are doing good! Little brother is good! And my sister and her twins are doing good! They’re almost turning one and doing good too! It’s be cool seeing them get bigger and getting to spend more time with them than I normally would!

FLMX: Your wife Brittany has made quite her own career in front of the camera. Appearing in the new Hunger Games 2, I saw her on Akward and of course all of the Game Shows she has won... How does she have time for that if she’s always at the races with you too and supporting you?CHIZ: Yea I’m really proud of her on doing all of those things! She definitely has a passion for acting and has always liked to do that and wanted to pursue it! It’s tough with our schedule but anytime she has an opportunity to do something like that and she’s available to do it I know she enjoys doing it! Hopefully one day she makes it big and makes some real money (haha jk). And as for her game show winnings (she’s won 2 cars and other things) she’s just the luckiest and most blessed person I guess! She definitely has the personality to be in front of the camera and I think that’s why she gets chosen to be on those shows!

FLMX: Cody is now riding in the A/Pro class too and doing really good. Does he have any plans going into the big time any-time soon?CHIZ: Yea Cody moved up to the A/Pro class last year. Right now he’s planning on racing Loretta’s and possibly some of the last nationals after that if everything is going good! I feel like Cody loves racing & riding, and is obviously really good at it, but he’ll have to decide in the near future if he wants to make a career out of it or not. Whatever he chooses to do doesn’t matter to me. I’m very proud of him for graduating high school early this year and also already completing a year of college while finishing high school! So whatever he chooses I’m sure he’ll be successful!

FLMX: Kyle good luck with getting back on the back and up front again! Any parting words and who would you like to thank?CHIZ: Just want to thank my wife, family and friends for their support always whether they’re the good days or the bad days and always being there for me! And also all my fans out there for their continued support as well! Big thanks to Scott Anderson, Brian, and all the guys at Morton Plant outpatient therapy in Clearwater for always taking care of me and getting me back healthy! And also to Dr. Augustine at JOI for always fixing me up quickly! Yamaha, Unit, Oneal, HJC and Leatt for sticking behind me! And lastly I have to thank God for all the blessings in my life and opportunities he’s given me to do what I love to do! I know he has a plan for me (and everyone) and I’m just happy to be here to do it! Hope to see you all out at the races soon! And anyone wanting to stay up to date with what I’m doing give me a follow on Twitter and Instagram. My name is @KyleChisholm11. Thanks guys!

2013 LUCAS OIL OUTDOOR NATIONALSBUDDS CREEK MECHANICSVILLE, MD ROUND 5

SIX12 RaceTech Race RepoRt PICS BY: ROB KOY

Budds Creek was the sight of Round 5 of the Lucas Oil Outdoor National Series this year, located just outside of the nations capitol of Washington, DC. Budds Creek is one of the favorites of all the riders, with the great dirt, fun jumps and hilly terrain. Location of the infamous Henry Hill and it hosted the 2007 Des Nations when RV went 1-1 on his 250f over everyone! The track was rough and it was hot, just like how outdoors are suppose to be!

With RV always dominating here, he was a shoe in for the win right? Not today! In moto 1 it was Mike Alessi with the holeshot, but RV would get around him quickly and lead them around. Alessi put up a fight with Dungey, which allowed RV to get away a little bit. Once he did get around him he would start pulling RV in! Dungey was riding loose and aggressive, but with a few laps to go would go down hard in the rollers before the finish line, knocking the wind out of his self. It took him a while to get up and going again but he would hold on 2nd place in front of Alessi. Barcia would come home in 4th and Ryan Sipes 5th.

Moto 2 was Alessi again off the start, but this time it was Dungey who made the move quickly and was gone! RV struggled with a bad start and by the time he got around Alessi for second it was way to late. Dungey would be too strong today on his Red Bull KTM and with 2-1 score would take the overall over RV’s 1-2. Alessi had 3rd all wrapped up but would go down hard on his MCR Suzuki, which handed the 3rd spot over to Malcolm Stewart! Stewart would get his first ever podium on the big bikes for his TLD Honda team. Canard was 4th in the moto but would get the podium with a 6-4.

The biggest news leading into the 250 class was the Florida Mini Sensation of Adam Cianciarulo making his Pro Debut! When the gate dropped it was GEICO Hondas Wil Hahn and AC side by side for the

BUDDS CREEK RACE REPORTholeshot! AC was up front but was quickly gobbled up by the first few guys with the fast pace. Musquin would eventually get past Hahn for the lead and start pulling a gap, but coming with his was his teammate Ken Roczen. With the KTM duo going 1-2 it looked to be all over, but O NO! Here came the El Chubacabro of Blake Baggett. Baggett was back as he would have a un matched pace and scream past the KTM duo. Baggett would hold on to his first win of the year with Musquin second and Roczen 3rd.

In Moto 2 it was Wil Hahn with another holeshot, but it was Darryn Durham getting around him early this time. Durham was on it this moto and would take off with the lead with his teammate Blake Baggett in 2nd It looked to be a for sure win for Baggett after his strong ride in moto 1, but that was not the case. It was Eli Tomac, who started around 15th coming through the pack, with lap times close to 4 seconds a lap faster than the rest of the field! Tomac would catch Baggett and Durham and get around them instantly and then was gone! Out of sight, Tomac would take the moto 2 win, Baggett would get around Durham for 2nd, but with a 1-2 score Baggett took his first win of the year!

southwick RACE REPORT

It was reported earlier this year that this years Southwick would be its last. According to reports the Legion that runs it and the Promoters could not come to terms with an agreement so the race could be going away. So it seems that this year could be the last of one of the most historic race sites we have. From its rough sandy conditions, it’s the most “Local” track on the circuit. With numerous amounts of local riders from the Northeast making names for themselves here at the track. This would also be John Dowds final race, at the remarkable ago of 47, in which he has held a national number for around 20 years straight!

In the opening moto of the 450 class it was James Stewart jumping out to the early lead followed by Andrew Short on his BTO KTM. Having problems in the first turn was Ryan Villopto and Dungey who both got stuck and would have to come from the back of the pack! With the top players down, James Stewart was showing why he is a true Florida boy in the sand box. James was riding the best we have seen all year, stretching out a big lead on Short. Then disaster struck, James would cross rut and go down hard! Stewart would be out of the race, but it would hand the lead over to Short! Short had a solid lead over Brett Metcalfe, who was back for a race from racing in Canada, with Dungey trying to catch them both. Dungey would find his way into 2nd and then start reeling in Short as it was KTM in the 1-2 spots. With the 2 lap board out Dungey made his move on Short to take over the lead. Coming from behind it was Barcia and Villopoto who had caught Metcalfe and got around him. At the line it was Dungey taking the win by less than a second over Short with Barcia and RV right there!

Moto 2 would not see the same fireworks. Ryan Villopoto would make quick work after the start to stretch out a big solid lead over Dungey and Barcia. Stewart put in another solid ride coming home in 4th. The overall would go to Dungey with RV second and Barcia 3rd. Congrats to both Metcalfe and Short who had their best overalls this year with a 4th and 5th.

In the 250 class it was Wil Hahn coming around the start in the #1 position, pulling the last 3 holeshots. Hahn would have Jimmy Decotis behind him early, but it was Decotis who would drop some spots as Tomac and

southwick RACE REPORTBaggett were coming quick. Eli Tomac is really fast. He would run down his teammate and check out! He would even fall one lap and still have a 20 second lead to easily take the win. Hahn had a motor problem and would DNF, all the while Baggett took home 2nd and Ken Roczen put in a great ride to finish 3rd.

Moto 2 would see Ken Roczen pull the holeshot on his Red Bull KTM, followed by his teammate Marvin Mus-quin and Jimmy Decotis. Tomac and Baggett would struggle with bad starts and have to come from the back of the pack. Roczen showed his sand skills this moto with an open track as he was gone! Roczen looked amazing to go on to win this moto easily. Musquin would have his problems and drop to 9th. Tomac would put in a great ride all the way up to 2nd for the overall and make up some points on Roczen. Zach Osbourne was 3rd this moto and that would give him 3rd overall.
