    Flipkart, the largest B2B e-commercebusiness in India, went live in 2007with the objective of making bookseasily available to anyone with

    internet access. Founded byentrepreneurs Sachin Bansal andBinny Bansal, Flipkart has diversifiedfrom book sales into other products.It sells entertainment productsfrommovies, music to consumerelectronicsas well as healthcareand personal products, homeappliances, and clothing.

    The rapid diversification has alsobrought rapid growth. This isillustrated by the companysexpanding network of warehousesand procurement operations.

    As a startup, Flipkart initially usedopen source technology to supportthe launch, but soon found that opensource business intelligence (BI)tools had limited functionality. Shinde

    says: Scalability was a problem. Itwas hard to drill down into our datato produce complex reports.

    QlikView impresses Flipkart asreplacement for open source BI

    In August 2011, the companyinvested in its first licensedbusiness discovery software withQlikView Enterprise Edition, whichhas since been upgraded toQlikView 11. By then, Flipkart wasexperiencing an increasinglycomplex data flow from differentbusiness unitsfor example,inventory and supply chain.

    Shinde says: We needed a smartsystem to collate and displaymeaningful and actionable analysis

    for decision makers across differentbusiness units and locations. Priorto this, wed very much been anopen source house. But withexponential expansion in thebusiness and a growing number ofknowledge workers and managersrequiring BI analysis and reports,we needed flexibility and speed inour analytics system.

    Flipkart was impressed by the rapidtime to business value achievedwith QlikView. Shinde says: Thefirst application for sales took justsix weeks to implement and eachsubsequent functional areasupply chain, inventory andfinancetook a similar effort.Speed of delivery made all thedifference to our business, withanalysis available instantly at thefingertips of our knowledge workerson a self-service basis.

    Another high-performingapplication in QlikView is forinventory management. Salespeople and managers access dataand find information quickly withoutany IT support.

Wevedeveloped the capacity to shareknowledge holistically acrossteams, which means we can better

    evaluate our sales strategy.

    The teams have responded well toQlikView due to its intuitive natureand user-friendly dashboards.Users can explore information

    freely rather than follow predefinedpaths of questions.

    The QlikView business discoveryplatforms application-driven modelworks with existing data sources,which for Flipkart includes the opensource MySQL data managementsystem and Microsoft Excelspreadsheet software.

    According to Shinde, the companyplans to extend QlikView use toemployee tablets andsmartphoneswhich is nowpossible with QlikView 11andprovide a dashboard for seniormanagement to gain an overviewof company performance.
