ers are treated with respect and given the

freedom to infuse their interests and ingenuity

into their classrooms, the atmosphere is

one of excitement, wonder and joy. Flint Hill

At the beginning of the school year, Lower School parents discuss their hopes and dreams for their children with Flint Hill teachers. This tradition symbolizes the spirit of Flint Hill School and embodies the values that unite our three divisions, which include a commitment to celebrate the passions, talents, backgrounds and ambitions of our students and to foster close, open relation-ships within our community.

Technology at Flint HillTechnology has rapidly expanded the world

of educational possibilities. Thanks to the

vast stores of information at their fingertips,

today’s students can do incredible things—

from using Google Earth to visit the Colosse-

um while studying ancient history to virtually

exploring the Metropolitan Museum of

Art during an art class. Flint Hill not only

embraces the effective, thoughtful and

productive use of technology in and out of

class, but is also one of a select few Apple

Distinguished independent schools in the

country. As one of the first schools to imple-

ment a TK-12, 1:1 technology program, we

provide all students with an iPad or MacBook

Air—tools that become indispensable over

the course of their Flint Hill experience.

Keeping up with today’s rapid pace of change,

particularly in the realm of technology, is

imperative if we are to prepare students

Global Day of PlayDuring the Global Day of Play, students work collaboratively to invent, design and build structures out of basic materials. They assume roles that match their interests and abilities—encouraging each other’s creativity, innovation and ingenuity—while developing teamwork skills and basic technical concepts that serve them in future academic pursuits. Flint Hill’s Lower School is a safe and caring community where

learning is both structured and joyful. A rich, nuanced curriculum

gives students room to grow and discover their talents and

interests while laying the groundwork for future academic

success by developing essential communication, critical

thinking, technical and problem-solving skills. From using

iPads to discover world cultures to participating in enrichment

clusters where they explore a multifaceted topic in depth,

Lower School students develop into productive learners in an

innovative, child-centered community.

We are proud of our Lower School learning environment,

which uses innovative tools to complement proven teaching

methods. Devoted, experienced faculty members provide

students with a foundation for good study habits and encourage

them to explore and make discoveries for themselves. In small

classes of fewer than 20 students, children learn to collaborate

with teachers and peers in the context of an academic

structure that fosters their talents while encouraging them

Taking an active roleLower School students showcase their academic progress and share their interests with their parents during Flint Hill’s unique student-involved conferences. In preparation for the conference, students reflect on their accomplishments and recent projects. Using iPads to lead their parents through their work, students learn to take pride in their academic progress, demonstrate their mastery of technology and become comfortable in a leadership role.

Engaging Minds, Opening HeartsFrom the earliest years of their education, Flint Hill students

participate in their academic success within a learning

environment that combines traditional and innovative

teaching methods in ways that support their academic, social

and emotional development.

Each day begins with a morning meeting where students

gather to greet one another and their teachers, share stories

about important events in their lives, participate in an

activity and reflect on a morning message from their teacher

that helps them understand their classwork for the day.

Morning meetings sometimes involve the entire Lower School

during a gathering called Inspiration, which provides a time

for the community to come together in a moment of shared

reflection. Morning meetings and Inspiration instill a sense of

camaraderie while reinforcing valuable social and interpersonal

skills. By learning to listen attentively to their peers and share

their thoughts, students become engaged community

members from an early age—and better equipped to master

basic skills and develop good study habits.

In the Lower School, students take these ideals and our four core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and compassion to heart, proudly reciting the Husky Promise and applying these important lessons in their daily lives.

It’s never too early for students to distinguish themselves and

pursue subjects that both engage them and impart essential

knowledge. To that end, Flint Hill offers enrichment clusters

where students work together in mixed-age groups to

explore a topic of their choice in depth. These groups give

students the opportunity to delve into engaging topics,

put academic principles into practice and work together to

create substantive and relevant projects. Cluster topics range

from genealogy and building with LEGO® bricks to Civil War

history and filmmaking.

Enrichment clusters represent collaboration at its best.

TK through 2nd grade students work together in one set of

groups, while students in 3rd and 4th grades collaborate in

another. Under the guidance of Flint Hill teachers and outside

subject matter experts, students chart a course for exploring

their chosen area of study, which may include writing a blog

devoted to their topic, creating a presentation for their peers

or performing a community service.

Personal growth, lasting connectionsThe changes and challenges students confront during the middle school years are profound. Middle School faculty members and staff are sensitive to the physical, emotional, social and personal transformations that characterize those years. We provide a support system of faculty advisors and peer advisory groups with whom students can share their thoughts and discuss personal and societal issues in a safe setting.

Inspiration and InclusionDuring Inspiration, every 8th-grader at Flint Hill School tells

their peers and teachers a story. Standing before the 7th- and

8th-grade classes and members of the faculty, each student

shares an experience that opened their mind and shaped their

perspective, such as overcoming a personal setback or injury

or traveling to a developing nation. Continuing a tradition

that begins in the Lower School, Inspiration gives students

the chance to share their beliefs and values while developing

their writing and public speaking skills.

Across classes and grade levels, Flint Hill encourages a degree

of personal reflection that enables Middle School students to

see their academic development in a larger context—as

part of the Flint Hill family, the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan

community, their country and the world. By understanding

and expressing who they are, what they’ve learned

and what they believe, our students grow as learners and

Learning by makingIn the Middle School elective Makers, students are presented with a simple challenge: to create something that both relates to their academic pursuits and excites their imagination. Whether students are building a circuit to power a light bulb, creating their own video game or crafting a musical instrument, Makers provides them with the space and tools to bring their creations to life. This innovative program demonstrates Flint Hill’s emphasis on using hands-on creative projects to reinforce academic concepts and build collaborative and teamwork skills.

Our Middle School curriculum develops the skills students

need to be successful learners, leaders, professionals and

citizens. Guided by dedicated, supportive instructors,

they build knowledge across a variety of disciplines while

developing broadly applicable skills in communication and

creative and critical thinking, as well as the ability to explore,

investigate and analyze in greater depth. Students nurture

their love of learning, address increasingly challenging

assignments and subject matter and receive the preparation

they need for success in the Upper School, college

and beyond.

As students progress academically, their coursework becomes

more rigorous and the classroom more self-directed, and

they take greater personal responsibility for their education.

Sixth-grade students add Latin to their Spanish language

education, while 7th-graders can also study French

or Chinese. Honors-level courses in both math and foreign

languages offer an extra challenge to especially motivated

students. Additionally, students choose from electives that

include our innovative Makers program. A 1:1 technology

program provides every student with a MacBook Air,

placing a source of unlimited knowledge and information

at their fingertips.

An outstanding dance programFlint Hill’s exceptional dance program includes a co-curricular class open to all Middle School students as well as the opportunity to try out for our dance team. Our dance studio features a sprung floor where students study the principles of movement and choreography, master the basics of various dance forms—from ballet to jazz to contemporary—and learn to choreograph their own pieces.

At Flint Hill, we believe that the arts reflect a fundamental

dimension of what makes us human, and that creative

expression is an integral part of a well-rounded education.

We approach the arts as a set of essential skills that

Middle School students can develop and master, and that

will continue to be a part of their lives in years to come. In

our robust arts programs, students make connections across

disciplines, grasp complex concepts and develop capacities—

such as poise, confidence and cultural literacy—that

enhance their academic success.

Building on the foundation established through the arts

programs at our Lower School, the Middle School arts

curriculum enables students to make new discoveries about

their abilities and interests, explore a variety of media, learn

focus and discipline and experience the joys of creativity

and self-expression. In all areas of artistic study—visual

arts, chorus, drama, dance, band, orchestra and percussion—

students learn directly from active and experienced

professional artists.

Whether in the studio, in the practice room or on stage,

students acquire a new, creative language for making their

voice heard. In addition to practical instruction, they gain

a better understanding of art history and global artistic

perspectives, experiencing firsthand the power of art to

break down barriers between communities and cultures.

Leadership and collaboration. A healthy attitude toward

competition. Drive, determination and self-discipline.

Strategy and sportsmanship. There’s no limit to the

capacities, values and life lessons that athletics can instill

in a student.

Physical activity and team sports are an important part of

the Flint Hill experience. In physical education classes,

5th- and 6th-graders are introduced to a rotation of team

sports and begin to develop the essential skills necessary

for each. Seventh- and 8th-grade students apply those skills

through participation in team sports or group athletic

activities. Students and parents appreciate the fact that Flint

Hill is small enough to allow Middle School students to excel

in multiple sports, yet large enough to field competitive teams.

As they grow physically and intellectually, students go

beyond the basics of fitness and play to develop capacities in

teamwork, leadership, strategy and preparation. Our physical

education teachers and coaches work to develop students’

skills according to their capabilities, potential and interests,

and to foster a positive athletic experience for all students

regardless of their skill level. In this way, we help develop a

love of physical activity and build the foundation for an active

and healthy life.

They also earn an increasing amount of freedom that allows them to direct their academic and extracurricular interests toward their personal goals. The senior project: A capstone experienceAs the culmination of their studies in the Upper School, seniors undertake an indepen-dent project at an off-campus organization. After meeting with their mentor to develop their plan and submitting a proposal to a faculty committee for approval, students spend 80 hours in the work setting of their choice. Through this experience, they gain valuable skills in setting and meeting goals, learn the importance of self-driven work and explore possible career options. At the completion of their project, students deliver a presentation to a panel of faculty members, reflecting on their experience and sharing what they have learned.

Focus and FreedomThe high level of trust and respect between teachers and

students in the Upper School gives students the space they

need to grow into capable adults. Flint Hill students maintain

their focus even as they gain that greater independence,

thanks to the ongoing support and structure provided by

faculty members and staff.

In the Upper School, students take greater responsibility for

their achievements in and out of the classroom. The guidance

and recommendations they receive enable them to choose

courses and activities that help them flourish academically,

A classical educationFlint Hill students begin their study of Latin in Middle School. Those with a passion for the language often continue their Classics studies at the Upper School, sometimes augmenting Latin with courses in Ancient Greek. Whether they take part in national Latin competitions or travel on a class trip to Italy, students who participate in our robust Classics program have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the ancient civilizations that provided much of the foundation for the modern world.

UPPER SCHOOL • GRADES 9–12

Upper School academics are distinguished by a combination

of breadth and depth, with courses that challenge students to

stretch their potential and attain new heights. Flint Hill

graduates affirm how well-prepared they were for college as

a result of the Upper School’s rigorous academic standards.

We understand that no two students learn exactly the same

way; our expert teachers are adept at accommodating

different learning styles and adapting their instruction to

meet student needs. Technology is closely integrated in all

classrooms, creating a plethora of learning opportunities.

From computer science to photojournalism, Upper School

students choose from a variety of core curriculum and

elective courses that satisfy both their foundational

requirements and individual interests. We offer 24

Advanced Placement (AP) courses that provide students

with the experience of in-depth study and exploration they

will encounter in college. At the same time, we know

that academic success is about more than test scores and

absorbing knowledge: Our goal is to nurture students’

Thinking in Three Dimensions

What does it mean to design with people in mind? Students in our multidisciplinary Design Thinking elective gain an understanding of the human dimensions of design-related projects. They conduct research and data analysis and improve their writing, presentation and critical thinking skills as they collaborate with faculty members to redesign a space within the school.

Artistic Skills, Lifelong BenefitsIn Upper School arts programs, students collaborate with

teachers who are working professional artists to develop

broad skills and a rich understanding of music, dance, theater

and the visual arts. Whether singing in a choral ensemble,

serving on the crew of a theatrical production or transforming

a piece of clay into a beautiful ceramic object, the discipline

and critical thinking skills they learn through our arts programs

enrich the perspectives they bring to other subjects. State-of-

the-art facilities—including a dance studio, three art studios,

our 300-seat Olson Theater and private music practice

rooms—give students access to the tools and facilities they

need to bring their creativity to life.

Students participate in up to 12 seasons of athletics during

their years in the Upper School. Through participation in

sports, they develop leadership skills, learn to put the

principles of teamwork into practice and turn fitness into

an enduring habit for lifelong health.

Flint Hill students embody excellence not only in the

classroom, but on the field and court as well. In recent years,

the Huskies have earned Independent School League and

Mid-Atlantic Conference championships in baseball,

boys basketball, football, golf, ice hockey, boys lacrosse and

girls volleyball. In addition to junior varsity and varsity sports

teams that include lacrosse, track, dance and ice hockey,

Flint Hill offers other physical education options such as a

fitness and conditioning class, as well as an outdoor

sports program that features hiking, biking and climbing.

This breadth of options ensures that all students have the

opportunity to reap the benefits of sports and physical activity,

learning valuable skills—such as discipline and collabora-

tion—that will serve them well in their academic pursuits.

The Road AheadWe are justifiably proud of the college list posted in our

College Counseling office each spring—not only because the

list includes many prestigious institutions, but also because

it represents the months of effort we devote to ensuring our

students enroll at schools that resonate with their academic

talents and personal goals.

While our College Counseling program doesn’t officially begin

until the fall semester of the junior year, students receive

invaluable support and guidance about their college options

from faculty advisors throughout their Upper School careers.

This helps ensure that their resume and transcript accurately

reflect their successes and meet the expectations of college

admissions offices. During junior and senior years, the

College Counseling office guides students through the

process of identifying colleges that provide the best fit and

helps them navigate the application process. The results

speak for themselves: Our students go on to thrive at excel-

lent schools that represent the right match for their learning

style, aspirations and goals.

Lighting the Lantern

At the earliest Iditarod races in Alaska, a lantern was lit and kept burning until the last team of huskies crossed the finish line as a way of honoring the courage and determination of every team—not just the winners. For Flint Hill, the lantern symbolizes the courage and determination our students exhibit as they master the challenges they face and excel as Huskies in their academic, athletic and artistic pursuits.

At the beginning of each year, seniors who have been at Flint Hill since kindergarten light a lantern that is kept burning until the last senior completes their requirements for graduation. The lantern sits in the window of the headmaster’s office for all to see—a powerful symbol of the journey we embark upon as a community each August.
