    Change is the only constant.Heraclitus

After my mechanical engineering degree at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, my interest was awakened in production development. As part of my professional experience, I have managed a series of lean oriented projects with focus on developing new production layouts and intralogistic flows. Based on my experiences I realized that the intralogistic process including material supply from warehouse to the production lines would be a huge challenge for factories. I realized that forklifts were a part of the past, and that carts were going to be the future. Not welded carts but flexible carts that could be adapted to different needs and scenarios. This is where the idea of FlexQube was started. I felt instinctively that these carts could be produced in a lot easier and better way. I wanted a kind of material cart that was quick to design and build, one which was easy to adapt to new needs and which could withstand heavy loads. A structure consisting of a few builing blocks with standardized dimensions, in order to simplify the process from needs to finished cart. A year and hundreds of sketches later, the concept that I had been looking for was ready to be tested. I built the first prototype at home in my living room. In early 2011 I started FlexQube together with Anders and Christian. Now in March 2015, we have delivered several thousand carts to customers in Scandinavia, Europe, USA and Asia, in hundreds of variations. Im excited to say this is just the beginning of our amazing journey.

In a global context, the ongoing mega-trends pose challenges for anyone working with internal logistics: Fluctuating demand, expanding number of product variants, shorter product cycles, global scalability and increasing focus on safety and ergonomics. FlexQube can help you meet these challenges to increase your competitiveness in an easy and efficient way.

The development in modern industrial production is driven by fierce competition, where innovation and cost control are two important control factors for success. Lean production, Just-in-Time and continuous improvement (Kaizen) are some of the benchmarking concepts that in recent years have been accentuated by a market-driven development towards shorter product life cycles, and an increasingly broader flora of product variants.

    HANDLING FREQUENT CHANGES

Sooner or later your plant will be forced to deal with more frequent product changes and fluctuating production volumes. When each product must be produced at a lower cost to be able to reach profitability during its short life cycle, there will be less room for investments in product-specific equipment. This will raise demand for flexible solutions that easily adapt to an increasingly unpredictable reality such as the FlexQube system.

    MEETING SAFETY REGULATIONS

Efficient production systems also require skilled labor. This in turn leads to increased demands for safer work environments and ergonomically designed workstations. Forklifts may be beneficial in many ways, but they are often both inefficient and dangerous when transporting materials between warehouses and assembly lines. Tugger trains have proven to be superior, especially when combined with well-

considered kitting carts that can provide a much more efficient and ergonomic material handling solution, both in warehouses and at assembly lines. Such carts are quick and easy to design and build with the FlexQube system.

    IMPLEMENTING GLOBAL STANDARDS

With regional plants around the world supplying local markets, your company needs clear standards describing the best way of working for balancing volumes, securing quality, and facilitating new product implementations. However, standardization cant mean that exactly the same solutions can be used everywhere. Needs will vary due to different volumes and mix of products at different plants and regions. With the FlexQube concept, flexibility and standardization go hand in hand. So if for example the volumes go up in South America and down in North America, you can easily balance this by allocating more FlexQube equipment from your North American plants to South America. FlexQube will support you around the world and provide you with the best and most cost efficient material handling equipment.

Supplying parts from the warehouse to the production areas in an efficient and safe way is a key challenge for all factories today. Thanks to our flexible yet sturdy components, you can use the FlexQube concept to design applications for the complete factory lightweight applications, heavy-duty applications, stationary racks, moving carts etc.

The applications in this illustration show a few examples of FlexQube carts with base frames in blue color.

    WAREHOUSE

In the warehouse you can use the FlexQube Pallet Changer to change pallets without the need for forklift. You can also store the pallets on rigid pallet carts that are ready to be picked up by a regular tugger, or more advanced mother / daughter train solutions.

Learn more about the Pallet Changer at www.flexqube.com / SL

    PREPARATION AREA

The space available for storing parts at the production line is usually very limited. Therefore the parts need to be prepared before they are delivered to these areas. Only the parts that are required for a specific product and assembly station at a specific time are delivered. With the FlexQube concept you can build completely customized kit carts dedicated for specific parts. If you prefer a more generic solution the shelf carts that are available in many different variants are perfect alternatives.

    PRE-ASSEMBLY AREA

In the pre-assembly areas you can use the FlexQube concept to store and present material in a smart way. Thanks to the flexible building blocks it is also possible to design assembly fixtures. Or even build a combined kit cart and assembly fixture that also works as a transport cart to the final assembly line. Integration between steps in the intralogistics process is becoming more and more important in order to reduce forklifts.

    FINAL ASSEMBLY AREA

Large and heavy parts are normally delivered on customized racks from the supplier. In the factory these must be handled in an efficient way without using the forklift. With the FlexQube concept you can build carts several meters/yards long and wide for transporting these racks. For the smaller parts, usually stored in plastic boxes, flow carts with rollers can be used. Optimally, a kit cart follows the product from start to end at the assembly line.

    FASTENERS

Due to the homogeneous interface, almost all connections are made with M6 bolts. The FlexBeam also has a M10 hole for heavy-duty connections and thus M10 bolts and nuts can also be used. This means that all connections can be done with limited number of tools.

The FlexQube system allows you to bolt your solutions together. To enable long durability and maintenance-free carts M10 bolts with locking nuts are used as the primary type of fastener. For the M6 interface self tapping bolts equipped with serrations are used. The bolts are proven to withstand vibrations for the complete lifetime of the application.

    FLEXPLATE

Material High strength steel, Zinc electroplated.

Function Connecting building block for the FlexQube and the FlexBeam. The same interface as on all other building blocks. Is welded to the FlexTube.

    FLEXQUBE

Material High strength steel, Powder coated

Function Connecting building block and main joint in the concept. A multifunctional locking coupling that can carry load, lock structures, create the desired angles of the structure and enable further construction of additional FlexTube, FlexBeam and other products through its homogeneous interface.

Dimensions One size. Two FlexQube together forms a 7 5 7 cm cube.

    FLEXTUBE

Material Standard Steel tube, Zinc electroplated.

Function A longitudinal building block with a 30 mm circular cross-section. FlexPlates are welded to each side of the tube which enables connection to all other building blocks in the FlexQube concept.

Dimensions 7 to 112 cm in intervals of 7 cm.

    FLEXTUBE INNER

Material Standard Steel tube, Zinc electroplated.

Function A longitudinal building block with a 25 mm circular cross-section. AFlexPlate is welded to one side of the tube which enables connection to the all other building blocks in the FlexQube concept. Fits inside the FlexTube to create telescopic length adjustments.

Dimensions 70 and 119 cm, other lengths available on request.

    FLEXBEAM

Material High strength steel, Powder coated.

Function A longitudinal building block with square cross-section. Same interface as all other products that enables further construction as desired. A FlexBeam is basically several FlexQube on a row. Together with another FlexBeam, a robust beam with a 7 5 7 cm square cross-section is created.

Dimensions 14 to 119 cm in intervals of 7 cm.

The FlexQube concept is developed out of a vision to design and manufacture any type of carts or racks for heavy duty internal material handling in an infinite number of variants, using only four basic builing blocks: a beam, a tube, a locking plate and a joint. All have the same 4 5M6 assembly interface and the same 7 cm dimensional range to facilitate the design process as well as assembling, re-assembling and recycling.

The beauty of simplicity: few components, endless possibilities.

Forklift free efficient and safeBy implementing a tugger train system together with carts instead of a traditional forklift material line feeding, its possible to transport more material at the same time. Instead of feeding one pallet at a time, four different carts can be transported to and from the line.

Operator injuries and damage to equipment when using forklifts is a well-known problem and many accidents are reported yearly throughout Europe and the US.

The carts have been a huge improvement when it comes to ergonomics. The material is easily rolled on and off the cart to the assembly station. Always at a good height and close to the body which reduces the load for the operator.

    60 %

In 2012, after winning a number of major orders for OEM catalyst converters, the Eberspcher plant in Nykping, Sweden was facing a huge increase in production volume. In order to handle this challenge with the existing capacity, the management decided to streamline the internal logistics.

The objective was to release productive time for the assembly operators, thereby increasing process uptime. Reduced forklift traffic and improved ergonomics were also important objectives.

    EFFICIENT MATERIAL FLOW

By introducing a tugger train system from STILL with compatible material carts from FlexQube, the plant was able to improve the material flow. Now more material is being transported with each milk run, while the ergonomically designed FlexQube kit carts have helped reduce the manual handling time for the assembly operators. This has reduced forklift traffic and pallet-based material handling by around 60 %. It has also reduced the risk of accidents while at the same time has enabled a more efficient

utilization of the available floor space. The working environment has also become less stressful for all personnel.

    15 DIFFERENT CART DESIGNS

The modular structure of FlexQube also allowed the plant to modify the carts designs as the production process developed. When the transport capacity of a specific cart had to be upgraded, this was easy to do without disturbing the production. Currently, the plant uses around 350 FlexQube carts in 15 different designs, all adapted to the shapes of the parts and the ergonomical demands of the operations.

    Improving productivity at Eberspcher.

Eberspcher utilizes a variety of FlexQube Solutions kit carts that are developed to transport specific parts to and from assembly, and standard carts for half EUR pallets.

It starts with me making a draft of a cart based on

the logistic needs and feedback from the operators,

Eberspcher. Next I have a colleague who helps me

with assembly, and then we test it in production.

Before you start designing the carts for your solution there are a number of things to take into consideration. The main use for the solution has to be clear and all the specific requirements have to be specified. Here are some examples of features that are important for us to know before creating the ideal solution for your needs.

    How to specify your requirements.

    ENVIRONMENT

In what kind of work environment will the cart be used

(outdoor /indoor)? What is the floor like and will the

cart be handled on uneven surfaces?

    ADJUSTMENTS

Will the cart be used in an environment where

    continuous improvement and modifications will

    be needed?

    PARTS

What kind of parts will be transported and what

properties do the parts have regarding materials,

    weight and dimensions?

    PRODUCT CYCLE

How long will the cart be used? Are you aware of any

future challenges and needs? Is it desirable to have a

modular cart which makes it possible to re-use after

    design adjustments?

    SAFETY

Will any parts need to be locked in place? Are there any

precautions needed regarding the operators safety?

    ERGONOMICS

Are there any limits of picking heights or force needed

to push the cart? Will the cart be pushed manually or

with some type of push / pull mover?

    COMPATIBILITY

Is the cart going to be used together with other

equipment like forklifts, tugger trains, AGV etc? If so,

what are the dimensions and capacity of those systems?

    Other size and height limitations?

Once the requirements are specified, its time to start the design. When doing the design, the goal is to use as many standard building blocks as possible to reduce lead time and cost. In some cases, customized components are needed to fulfill the functionality of the cart. If you are lucky, a customized part that will fulfill your need has already been designed, and you will find it in the Solutions Library (www.flexqube.com / SL). By designing on your own, you get a good understanding of how the concept works and how the building blocks come together. But if you need support when designing, the FlexQube Team will be happy to help in the process to make sure you find the right solution for your needs.

Assembly is easy and there are many benefits in doing the assembly on your own. If this is not a suitable alternative, FlexQube can of course support the assembly for you. Thanks to the FlexQube standards, a limited number of bolts and tools are needed during the assembly process. Most of the time a flat table is enough to assemble FlexQube trolleys in an efficient and safe way. The assembly is easy and does not require special skills or experience from previous assembly work. In addition, FlexQube can provide assembly instructions for your specific solution to make the assembly even easier.

    FAST PROTOTYPING

Assembly of a prototype cart late in the design phase, is an efficient way to verify the functions and come up with the final adjustments. FlexQube building blocks are available for immediate delivery and the lead-time for shipment can be managed in a matter of days.

If there are many trolleys to assemble, it is even possible to design assembly fixtures based on the FlexQube building blocks. This simplifies the assembly and secure that carts can be produced in large-scale, and in an efficient way.

    EASY MODIFICATION

When the application has been in use for a while, there is a chance that the operators have recognized a number of improvements they want to do on the carts. Dont worry. Thanks to the modularity in the FlexQube concept, it is easy to update already assembled carts with new or modified components. The modularity also simplifies the repair process if a cart has been damaged. You dont have to replace the complete cart, just replace the components that are damaged. These benefits are a big advantage compared to welded carts that are costly and time-consuming to modify and repair.

When the design is completed, it is time to assemble your Flexqube application.

Shelf carts.FlexQube offers four types of shelfoptions; flat, telescopic, angled or with roller tracks. The focus on modularity in the FlexQube system gives you the possibility to use the system for higher loads than other flexible tube and joint systems on the market.

The FlexQube system can be integrated with mother-daughter frame systems as well as be used independent of such systems, instead using tongue and hitch solutions with rigid tow bars.

FlexQube also offers ergonomic solutions like wire released tow bars with no need for operators to bend when releasing the couplings between carts.

FlexQube is collaborating with existing forklift companies to make sure our solutions are compatible.

FlexQube has extensive experience working with different types of roller solutions. The FlexQube concept is compatible with many of the roller tracks offered by competing tube and joint systems. If you are having problems with tube and joint racks that cant handle the loads you put on them. Just transfer the existing roller tracks into a new cart or rack built by FlexQube components.

Two in one is a concept developed by FlexQube that increases efficiency of material flow from warehouse to production line, improves ergonomics for operators and reduces walking distance between product and material facade. The idea is to put smaller carts inside a larger cart and then transport the complete set of carts in a tugger train. The system can be adapted and customized to your specific needs.

    Part number: Q-007-1472

    ROLLER CART WITH EXTENDABLE LEVEL

This roller cart uses standard roller tracks which are connected tothe FlexTube. The lower level in this case is mounted onto telescopic lists which makes it possible to pull out the complete shelf for improved access

    Part number: Q-007-1342

    ENGINE BLOCK CART

Carts with heavy duty rollers to transport a engine block from apre-assembly area to the production line.

    Part number: Q-007-1021

    GEAR PALLET CART

Carts with heavy duty rollers with two levels to transport both the empty fixture plate and a full fixture plate. Release of each level is made by pushing a handle bar on the opposite side. The locking mechanism uses a gas spring to snap back into locking position.

    Part number: Q-007-1120

Use holes in FlexBeam to add pins for holding hoses/rings.

Possible to add box. Shelves can be moved up and down using the patended FlexQube locking function.

    Casters.

    POLYURETHANE

Softer than the nylon casters but still hard to enable good movement on the floor. Rolls well on rough surfaces. Quiter when moving due to the material. High weight capacity.

    BRAKE OPTIONS

FlexQube offers several types of brakes for the casters.

Total brake; brakes both wheel and swivel

Fixed brake; brake pedal stays in same position independent of swivel

    Floor lock brake

    POLYAMIDE

Hard caster which leads to very low friction when handling manually. Can be used for heavy duty parts and still be easy to maneuver manually.

    DIRECTIONAL LOCKING

This option can be integrated with the 200 mm casters. It allows you to lock the direction of a swivel caster in four different directions. It is a good option if for example you need to transport a cart with the short side out first to the production line but also place the cart with the long side facing the production line.

    ALTERNATIVES FOR BRAKES

    Fixed brake

Fixed brake which doesnt move as caster turns. No risk for brake ending up under the cart.

    Floor locked brake

Brake that is separated from the caster.

    Directional locking of brake
