Living history and a lively port city
The Fleur-de-lis Trail begins at the Canso Causeway and winds its way along the south-eastern part of Cape Breton Island, where
Acadian fi shing villages dot the coast, hugged by untouched wilderness.
From the Fleur-de-lis Trail, continue onto the Marconi Trail, where a storied past will immerse you in its rich history. Enter the largest reconstructed fortifi ed town in North America, the 18th-century French Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. This Canadian Signature Experience will take you where cos-tumed interpreters offer you a peek into their personas’ daily lives (see page 190). Descend into a coal mine with a retired coal miner as your guide at the Miners’ Museum in Glace Bay (see page 190). At the Marconi National Historic Site, learn how the fi rst wireless message transmitted across the Atlantic led to today’s network of global communications (see page 190).
Music is a vital part of life in this region. Feel the excitement at the award-winning Celtic Colours International Festival each fall. This Canadian Signature Experience is a nine-day Celtic music extravaganza that brings the whole Island alive with music and energy. Take in one of the performances at the Louisbourg Playhouse, a theatre-in-the-round performance venue inspired by London’s 1599 Globe Theatre (see page 190).
At the port city of Sydney, enjoy a stroll along the water front boardwalk. Take a selfi e with the giant fi ddle standing 18 metres (60 feet) tall, and check out the downtown shops along Charlotte Street. Be sure not to miss the collection of locally made one-of-a-kind masterpieces at the Cape Breton Centre for Cra and Design (see page 190).
LeNoir Forge Museum, ArichatSituated on the historic Arichat waterfront, this 18th-century French blacksmith shop features a working forge, demonstrations, and a gi shop. For the history buff , the site also includes a com-munity archive, genealogy centre, and a boat barn (see page 189).
Two Rivers Wildlife Park, HuntingtonGet up close and personal with over 50 native and non-native species of wildlife like lynx and black bear at this family-friendly park and wilderness area. Enjoy the wagon and sleigh rides, playground, petting zoo, and U-fi sh pond. Take a nature break by exploring the hiking and cross-country ski trails (see page 189).
Savoy Theatre, Glace BayThis historic theatre plays host to a variety of performances each year, from comedy to theatre to music. Check out the schedule of events and be sure to attend a show when you’re in town (see page 190).
Fins and Fiddles Expedition Cruise One Ocean ExpeditionsImmerse yourself in this Canadian Signature Experience with 11 days of nature, music, mari-time culture, and sea-faring fun. The Nova Scotia leg leaves from Louisbourg on a small expedi-tion cruise ship; you wake up to the mystique of remote Sable Island, where wild horses run free on grassy dunes and grey seals bark from sandy shores at waters littered with 350 shipwrecks.
Itinerary stops include Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland and Labrador, and Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Anticosti Island in Québec. oneoceanexpeditions.com
