Faith Lutheran Church was chartered as a member congregation of the LCMS in October 1954. Since that time, this congregation has been served by 10 pastors in four locations. I have had the privilege of serving the last 19 years here, which is almost 30% of the congregation’s history. When I visited Helen Knapp this week in the hospital, she reminded me of the anniversary that has just passed. Helen is the last of our charter members to still be a part of our congregation. Her memories are a treasure trove of stories reflecting God’s work in this place over the years. By most standards, this congregation has always been rather small. However, the fact that our history spans six and a half decades means that countless people have come and gone over time. We were founded as a Sunday School mission serving somewhere between 100 and 200 children in New Castle, all in a little house in Collins Park. Since that time, countless baptisms, confirmations, and weddings have taken place over the years. Our preschool, though it took a hiatus when we transitioned from New Castle to Bear, has been a hallmark of our ministry since back in Swanwyck Estates in New Castle.

CELEBRATING 65 YEARS OF MINISTRY:

LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD WITH THANKSGIVING

This year’s anniversary of Faith Lutheran Church has come and gone without any ado, but every anniversary is a great opportunity to look back, to look ahead, and to celebrate. Faith Lutheran Church was chartered as a member congregation of the LCMS in October 1954. Since that time, this congregation has been served by 10 pastors in four locations. PASTOR’S MESSAGE CONTINUES…

Over the history of this congregation, we have had members from four states, who gather here in this central hub that we call Faith Lutheran Church.

As we look back, we give thanks. We give thanks to God for His faithfulness, His care, and His guidance. And now as we look forward, we also give thanks for God ‘s continued faithfulness, care, and guidance. We are currently working on strategic planning. We have had two envisioning workshops where we are taking the opportunity both to look back and to look ahead at where God is leading us in mission. It’s an exciting time for our congregation. This is a time to assess our opportunities, our priorities, and our goals.

Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” (Luke 10:2 ESV). The harvest is still plentiful. Our mission field is right outside our door, in this community and in our own neighborhoods. As we embark on our 66th year of ministry together, let us pray to the Lord of the harvest, trusting that He will guide and lead us forward. Thank you for being a part of this mission and ministry that we call Faith Lutheran Church.

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17 )ESV

In His Service, Pastor Michael Thress

THANKSGIVING EVE SERVICE Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 @

7:00pm. In addition to giving thanks and praise to God, we will also have our

traditional bread exchange during service.

ETERNAL CANDLE SPONSORSHIP When we see the eternal flame, we are reminded that God is always

present in our lives, and He promises to never leave us. God is especially

present in His sanctuary where we hear His living Word and receive his

wonderful Sacraments. If the candle burns out, we re-light it or put

another one in its place. In other words, we do our best to keep it lit 24

hours-a-day.

To sponsor an Eternal Candle, visit the bulletin board in the narthex and sign up for a date on the

provided sheet. Once you have signed up, just place $5.00 in the offer plate marked “Eternal Candle.”

Eternal Candles can be placed in honor of lost or loved ones.

COUNCIL CHAIR MESSAGE Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Over the next three months, I will be doing a short study with you on "The Way We Worship" which is a study that I have been doing to better inform myself as to what and why we do things the way we do in the Lutheran Church. PART ONE OF: The Way We as Lutherans Worship... Have you ever come to the church service and been puzzled by what you have seen and then heard? Please don't be discouraged! It is not very hard to see the logic and the meaning of a worship service. Begin by considering why we as Christian people come to church to worship. We are there in response to God's love in Jesus Christ and to share that experience with other Christian people. WHY COME TO CHURCH? We come for the following reasons: • To acknowledge the sins, we have and to receive again the assurance of Forgiveness. In worship

language, this is called "confession and absolution". In the beginning of the service we do confess our sins and receive absolution for them by the words spoken by us and then from the pastor.

• Next, we are there to praise God for His grace and mercy. For this we use hymns, psalms, canticles

and explicit prayers of thanksgiving. • To hear the Word of God read and proclaimed. Most services include three readings or lessons: one

from the Old Testament, one from the New Testament, and one from the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). Next in most services comes the sermon or a homily. A homily is the same as a sermon but normally a little less formal. In both, the pastor proclaims the Word of God and applies it to the needs of the hearers. (This is where he steps on some toes, if you get my drift...I sure know what that means).

• Next, we join in prayer. Christians pray prayers of petition and intercession as well as prayers of

praise and thanksgiving. Every service also contains the Lord's Prayer. • To receive God's blessing as we go back out into the world to live our lives and carry out our

vocations and to spread the Word of God to others. This is where we receive the "Benediction"...The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

Next month we will have PART TWO: the "Sacraments and the Leaders". Looking forward to the month of November and the Thanksgiving season. Please remember how blessed we are and remember to help the ones less fortunate than us. May God continue to bless you and smile upon you with HIS grace. Jeff Holsinger – Council Chairman

WOODEN PLATFORM CROSS Share your fond memories of a piece of Faith history!

The Priscilla Circle would like to learn your remembrance about the cross on

the platform in the narthex. So many of us current members were not

members of the congregation when the cross was dedicated and would like to

hear from those of you that were. So, if you were there that day, please tell us

what it happened and how you felt, and what it reminds you of when you see

it now.

Email your responses to Amy Cannavo at [email protected] or hand

deliver on any Sunday. And if you have a photo of it we would love to see it.

We look forward to hearing from you!!!

FOLDING CHAIR DRIVE It’s time to retire the well-used metal folding chairs that are used for various

congregational events. They will be replaced with molded polyethylene chairs.

The goal is to obtain 67 chairs and a folding chair truck to store them on when

not in use.

$20.00 will replace one chair. Please consider a donation for one or more. Please

ensure donations are marked “Folding Chair Drive.”

ANGEL TREE SUPPORTING A HUG FROM MATT Visit the Angel Tree in the narthex and choose one or more items to donate to A

Hug From Matt. Items will be collected through the month of November.

Then join the Priscilla Circle on December 7th to assemble care bags during their

annual Ladies Christmas Brunch.

ALTAR GUILD ASSISTANCE NEEDED We are looking for volunteers to serve on the Altar Guild. The Altar Guild helps

to prepare for communion each week as well as care for our altar and the

various paraments that are used on the altar. If you are interested in learning

more or joining our Altar Guild, please email Jill McLaughlin at

[email protected] or Judy Andela at [email protected].

MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY Being Jesus Hands and Feet

We are coming to the end of our Midweek Bible Study using the first part of the

Gospel of Matthew. We have seen Jesus call His disciples, teach the people in the

Sermon on the Mount. He healed many and we saw His compassion on all those who

suffered and was always willing to help them in their needs. We saw that His most

important message was that He is the promised Messiah, and He has come to bring in God's kingdom

for those who would believe. He spent time teaching His disciples and sending them out on His mission

because they would be His hands and feet after He returned to His heavenly home.

His promises to always be with His disciples are for each of us today as we go about our everyday lives.

We show His love when we reach out in caring ways to those around us who are having difficult times.

We are His hands and feet as we get to know our neighbors better and show them that we care about

them by taking time to listen to them when they may be troubled. This can give us openings to share

with them what Jesus does for us. There are also many ways we can help in the work of the church.

Our Priscilla Circle does many things to support community groups that help those in need. At our

Saturday meetings we often have a speaker that tells us of the work of our own members to help

those in need or a speaker from Sunday Breakfast Mission, Door of Hope or others. We also support

the efforts of our own LWML that reaches all over the world supporting groups working in Jesus name.

And then we have the Food from Faith ministry that distributes nutritious food to people in our

community. Help is always needed especially on the day that families arrive for their food. It is a great

blessing to see them being helped in this way.

Our men meet on a Saturday morning for Bible Study and some fellowship. How about thinking of

joining them sometime.

Join us on a Sunday morning for an excellent Bible class where we have thoughtful discussion.

We can also visit those who are sick or even give them a phone call to say that we are praying for

them. A card in the mail is always appreciated by those who have not been able to attend worship.

During our worship service it is a privilege to take part in some way. We can offer to read the Scripture

lessons and assist pastor in the service. We can be acolytes and ushers and counters.

We all have gifts and are blessed as we use them for the work of the Lord. How about thinking of how

you can be used to be the hands and feet of Jesus. No way is too small...

We will also be revealing this year’s Secret Sisters and drawing for next year. This is a rewarding and fun opportunity to minister to (and BE ministered to) a sister in Christ. Additional details are included at the end of the newsletter.

A HUG FROM MATT A Hug From Matt is currently collecting fleece blankets to give out to our homeless population in the city. I started doing this to honor my son Matt. His generous heart taught me to see beyond the stigma by reaching out to those beautiful people the world seems to have forgotten. Please donate a blanket if you can. TRUNK OR TREAT RECAP The annual Trunk or Treat was held on October 26th and we had a

wonderful turnout of approximately 60 attendees (Adults and Children)

from our community.

Dinner was served and while the children waited

for the main event, they were treated to a

showing of “Spookly the Square Pumpkin.” When the movie was over,

Pastor Thress and Master Puppeteer Christie Moore shared a short message

with a special pumpkin carved by Christie Moore that everyone was amazed

with. Can you tell who is pictured in the pumpkin?

As we went outside this year for the main event, Trunk or Treat we

held our 3rd Annual Best Trunk Competition where the kids voted for

their favorite trunk. This year in an upset the Mertz Family took home

the title of Best Trunk with their Pirate Ghost Ship. 2nd place went to

the Boyd-McCormick with Mad Scientists and 3rd place went to the De

Luz Family for Monster Mash.

Trunk or Treat is a huge event to pull off every year. This year Christie

and I could not have been successful if it wasn’t for the wonderful

generosity of all of those who helped us the night before with setup and evening of the event. There

are too many of you to mention here but please know that we were blessed to have your assistance

with taking a heavy burden off our shoulders. Words are unable to express how grateful we are for all

of your help. Thank you.

P.S. – we apologize for the lack of pictures from this event. We had a number of attendees who signed

up that did not agree to the photo/video release when they submitted their RSVP. We decided to

respect their wishes and no photographs or video was taken during the event.

SUPPORT AFTER ADDICTION DEATH SUPPORT GROUP This Support Group was started after I lost my son, Matt from an OD of

prescription drugs. I realized my grief was unique. Until you have lived the

Roller Coaster of having a loved one suffering from the disease of Addiction you

could never understand the hopelessness and helplessness, we experienced

while trying to save them. Our ending is not the one we dreamed of. We are

left with feelings of failure.

Meetings are held the first Thursday of every month from 6:30pm-8:30pm

PROUD, LUCKY, BLESSED When my baby girl announced to me in the summer of ’95

she was going to Officer’s training school for 8 weeks, I could

have passed out from fear. Then two years later, as she

graduated from the University of Delaware, she was sworn

into the US Air Force.

Second Lieutenant Kristine M. Whitsel.

I watched her grow through the ranks, First Lieutenant to

Captain. Her time in Kuwait (my sleepless nights) then

Major and Lt. Colonel. She had some terrific duty stations,

like Las Vegas & the Pentagon. She developed a strong work ethic and was respected by Colonels &

Generals.

Then on September 26th, she retired after 22 years serving our country. I am proud of her and her

numerous accomplishments. I am a Lucky American for having had her contributions to the USA.

Most of all I am so very Blessed the Lord entrusted to my care that tiny little life.

This congregation has prayed for her, each & every Sunday for many years now. For that, you have my

deepest and most sincere appreciation.

Your sister in Christ,

Carlene Whitsel

FOOD FROM FAITH/GROCERY CLUB The Grocery Club continues to go very well, and it is very gratifying to be a part of this ministry and see the genuine gratitude of the families that receive food from our distribution. None of what we do would be possible without the help and dedication of many people: Herta Patrick, Dennis Wanzer, Judy and Rich Andela, Loren and Michelle

Caudill, Ron Cuomo, Julianne and Will Harp, and Mary Ann Ottolini. Others who help when they are available or when we are short of help on Distribution Day include Jill McLaughlin, Kym Caudill, Pastor Thress, and Isaac Rufus. Our next pickup date from the Food Bank of Delaware will be Thursday, November 7th. Distribution will be on Saturday, November 9th, We thank everyone who has donated food to our pantry, and we want to see your generous donations continue! The important thing to note is that we cannot accept expired food of any kind. It would be unlawful to distribute it to our families. Thanks to all who have helped in any way. You are appreciated! If you are interested in learning more about the Food From Faith/Grocery Club or would like to assist, please speak with Jamee McGauhan.

COMMUNICATIONS UPDATE My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Since I have been at Faith Lutheran Church, I have made it a goal of mine to increase our methods of

communications. We have been able to expand our online presence by sharing more online via

Facebook and website upgrades, sharing sermons and short videos online and the return of our

newsletter. This may not seem like much but at times it is a lot of work.

After my recent surgery most of you saw me at services that honestly, I should have been home in bed.

Unfortunately, right now I am the only one that oversees all of this and should something more serious

occur to me, I am left to wonder what would happen to everything.

As much as I enjoy what I do for Faith Lutheran Church, the fact of the matter is I need help and some

backups. Over the next couple of months, I will start setting up meetings to help show people what I

do with everything in the hopes that one or more of you will be willing to assist me. A lot of the stuff is

not hard and can be learned with a little bit of training. So if you have an interest in working with our

website, Facebook, newsletter, videos or anything else please reach out to me via email at

[email protected] or speak with me at church.

This reminds me of a verse in the song The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel “And in the light I

saw, ten thousand people, maybe more, People talking without speaking, People hearing without

listening People writing songs that voices never shared, And no one dared disturb the sound of

silence.” So please consider disturbing the sound of silence with me.

Peace be with you all – Chris Moore

FAITH LUTHERAN SECRET SISTER PROGRAM What is the Secret Sister Program? The Secret Sister program is an outreach ministry for women in our church fellowship. All the ladies of our church are invited to participate. If you participate you will draw a name and that woman becomes your Secret Sister for a year. You become her silent prayer partner and her secret up-lifter. She doesn’t know who you are. Likewise, someone will be caring for you in that way too. Secret Sisters are about encouraging, praying for, and supporting each other in small ways. You do not have to regularly attend Priscilla Circle meetings to participate. What responsibility do I have as a Secret Sister? Once names are drawn you can immediately begin sending notes, cards, or special secret greetings that can continue throughout the year. Something homemade, a sweet treat, or a simple gift is an appropriate way to say: “You’re in my thoughts”. Pray for your Secret Sister. Keep her in your thoughts. Please send a message at least once a month. Thinking about our Secret Sisters daily and sending a little “hello” card at least monthly is why the program is so enjoyable. It’s especially nice to receive those notes saying you’re being thought about or remembered in a special way, or for a special reason.

• Encouragement: Cards, thoughtful notes, poems, bookmarks, a journal or maybe her favorite candy bar or snack can be a delightful surprise. Review her personal profile sheet to get ideas, and remember to keep gifts small. While there is no set limit on the amount to be spent on gifts, keep in mind that this program is not about giving and receiving gifts. (If you do not have money to spend, don't!) Your words, even on a blank piece of paper, can go so far! And don't forget that prayer is powerfully encouraging!

• Support: Send a bible verse or a special quote that you feel she would like. Maybe it is a

comic strip for some laughs! Maybe it is secretly arranging a meal to show up at her door when you know she is very busy. Be creative, the opportunities are endless.

How do I get a Secret Sister? Complete the “All About Me” form and bring it with you to the Priscilla Circle Christmas meeting on Saturday, December 7. If you are unable to attend the meeting, hand it to Julianne Harp, Kym Caudill or Amy Cannavo by December 1. You can also mail the form to the church to the attention of the Priscilla Circle or scan it and email it to [email protected]. The forms will be drawn at the Christmas meeting. When do I find out who my Secret Sister is? The program lasts for one year. Your secret sister will be revealed at the Christmas meeting next December.
