Welcome to the Cooksley, Birnie and Sandbur Ridge 6th Annual production sale. This is our 6th sale together and the 3rd as the Flat Water Red Angus Gang. We would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to our customers and those that have expressed interest in our sale and programs. Over the years, we have developed many friendships and have enjoyed watching our genetics go out and work for our customers. The relationships we’ve built and the success that our clientele has experienced using our genetics are two of the most rewarding aspects of what we do. It is very satisfying watching our friends top their respective markets each year when they sell their steers and replacement quality females. Your success is important to us and we take our responsibility as a part of that very seriously.

The genetics being offered in the sale and the bulls that are carrying them are very deep in quality. Visitors throughout the summer and fall have been very complimentary in respect to the depth in the bull pen. Excellent bulls can be found all the way through the sale order. The bulls and their genetic capabilities are a representation of our philosophy, which is centered upon productive longevity.

That focus is on an all encompassing breeding program aimed at producing sound females that express long-term production in order to generate sustainable profi ts. This encompasses everything from structure, body type, udder conformation, disposition, calving ease, fl eshing ability, fertility and carcass quality. Great cows make great bulls that in turn produce great cows. It is a never ending cycle.

As part of that philosophy, we adhere to responsible bull development programs. Our bulls are never offered creep feed and they are never pushed to achieve extraordinary gains. Slow and steady wins the race. Our development program is simple. The focus is on creating long lasting durable breeders. We grow them sturdy enough to get the job done and lean enough to want to.

Guarantee: All bulls are guaranteed breeders and are guaranteed healthy on sale day. They will have passed a semen test and breeding soundness exam. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day. Bulls are guaranteed to be breeders during the fi rst breeding season. Breeding season is defi ned as the 90-day period following the fi rst turnout of the bulls. Individual breeders will work with customers on a case-by-case basis concerning guarantees.

Delivery and Load-out: We are offering free delivery to all points in the state of Nebraska. Delivery to other states will be at the lowest cost possible from the seller’s base operation. Bulls not delivered by April 15 will incur a $4 per day feeding cost thereafter. A $100 credit will be offered for bulls taken home on sale day by the new owner.

Welcome to the Annual Flat Water Red Angus Gang Production Sale. Thank you to our past customers for your continued support and interest in our program and our offering. I would also like to extend a welcome to any cattlemen looking to us for the fi rst time. If you have any questions regarding this offering please call me anytime at 402-843-8726.

Last year was the fi rst year of developing our bull offering on a TMR diet, and we worked the bulls up to a 48 MCal ration. This marks the seconded year of using a TMR diet. However, we held the bulls to a 47 MCal ration. These bulls are not carrying the fl esh of last year’s offering, yet they display all the width of top and muscle expression you have come to expect from Sandbur Ridge bulls. The REA per 100 pounds, on the 66 bulls I developed, came in at 1.24 inches per 100. These bulls have the spring of rib, depth of body and chest fl oor width necessary to perform on less. These features will put money into your pockets for years to come through cheaper costs of gain on the feeder cattle and the ability of the replacement heifers to thrive on less desirable roughage.

We have an excellent offering of heifer bulls, the kind you can turn in and feel confi dent you will have very few problems when calving out next spring. There is a great selection of those moderate birth weight and higher growth bulls that can be used on heifers and then rolled up into the cows as the bulls get older. I also have a handful of those heavier birth weight bulls that will add pounds to your calf crop and leave you with those bigger replacement heifers that the market is paying top dollar for.

The focus of our program continues to be on building high quality, highly fertile, ex-tremely functional and problem free females. Our cow herd has excellent udders, good feet, top fertility, can fend for themselves, calve on their own and they last a long time. I work full time, so those characteristics are paramount to my own success.

The dams of our embryo calves have stood the test of time and produced very well to earn a spot in our donor herd. The 3940 cow would be 20 this year, F7 would be 19, L489 would be 14 and 552 would be 10. These cows produced every year. Some breeders like to highlight their cow’s age, yet they fail to mention that their 15 year old cow has a calving interval of 1,222 days. Ours donors have been proven. Since we only fl ush to cows that are proven producers, the EPDs of these cattle are not cutting

First, I’d like to welcome you to the sale. It is an exciting time in the Red Angus business. High demand speaks to the quality of the breed and, most importantly, to the quality of Red Angus cows. This is our 25th year as a Red Angus breeder. We started out with 35 heifers from Jerry Teahon and a Coppertop Chief 301 son from Ole Redland. The base of our cows still trace back to those heifers and we are still using a Coppertop Chief 301 son from Buffalo Creek. Time has changed, but cattle that raise

edge. However, the predictability of this offering is very high and the actual performance of the bulls will run with or pass several of the EPD multipli-ers. I cannot call those that multiply EPDs breeders.

When you look at the videos of the bulls you will notice white boards with black numbers on them in various locations around the video pen. The purpose of those boards was an attempt to give you some idea as to the size and potential frame score of our bulls. We have included a frame score chart in the catalog for you to reference as you watch the videos. I understand that this is not a perfect method but I hope it lends value to you as you look over our offering. Please let me know your thoughts on this so I can determine how to move forward.

calves and breed back while still producing a quality end product are always going to be in high demand.

We are in a transition from a fall-based herd to an April-calving herd. This change was made due to feed costs, labor and all of our kids in school activities. Calving January and February purebreds, and April and May commercials, while coaching basketball was not earning me any brownie points. As we continue to breed the heifers for April, our January-February bulls will be replaced by April 2-year-olds.

As for the bulls, they did great. They came through a cold winter and are hard and ready to go. Quality is good top to bottom. This is the fi rst set out of a couple new herd sires and the fourth for a couple others. This is the fi rst big bunch of Currency W118 sons we have let go. He has done a lot for us producing that moderate fertile cow with a perfect udder. This is the last set from Ram 802. He was one of those rare bulls with a perfect disposition that sired excellent bulls and females. Both bulls will leave a last-ing impact on our commercial cows.

Thank you to all of our past customers for your continued support and trust in our program, and to all of you that have expressed interest in what we have to offer. Our family is honored to be a part of this group as they are close friends and family with a common goal of producing problem-free genetics that are devoted to the fundamental elements that the Red Angus breed is built upon. Those fundamentals focus on maternal and essential elements such as calving ease, disposition, fertility, longevity and fl eshing ability. Cattle with these traits are reproductively sound and proven to be the most profi table.

Our breeding decisions are consistently based on the end goal of creating great females and productive cow families. It is that maternal principle that guides us. That focus combined with adherence to structural correctness from the feet to the udder and beyond has helped us build a cowherd that is adaptable and effi cient. Our cows are not perfect and still have fl aws, but we are constantly trying to improve upon our foundation.

We select for wide based, moderate framed cows with rib shape and depth of body. This is the type of animal that excels in our environment as they have the capacity and volume to convert forage. In our experience, females that lack volume and dimen-sion are animals that are unable to forage effectively, balance their energy needs and ultimately fail to produce on a long term basis.

Our selection pressure both on type and kind in the cowherd and our bull battery con-tinues to express itself in our ultrasound data. It is no surprise the cows and herd bulls with muscle and expressive rib shape produce animals with above average ribeye area. This crop of bulls average 1.257 inches of REA per cwt. In addition the group had an average IMF score of 4.45 and an average back fat measurement of .295 inches. Last year’s bulls averaged 1.208 inches of REA per cwt, 4.458 IMF and .3384 inches of back fat. This group is leaner, but displays equivalent carcass quality.

Once again, they were developed with Sandbur Ridge’s bulls. Ross and I visit about the bull development program every year and consult with our nutritionist to balance diets and help us achieve our target of 3 lbs. gain/ per head/per day. We accomplished this on a 47 Mcal NEg diet that consists of quality forage, distiller’s grains and a minimal amount of corn. Due to the use of distiller’s by-products, this diet is very low in starch grain, which allows the rumen to function as it would on native pastures, thus reducing or eliminating a “transition period.” They are ready to go to work.

Our goal is to develop bulls that are structurally sound and durable so that they can work for a long time. Steady and responsible growth is good for the sound structural development and long term function of the bulls. We see no value in feeding a high-energy ration for a “test period” to measure performance. The only reason any breeder does that is to manipulate yearling weights, EPDs, and to boast of extraordinary per-formance. Is that true performance or simply a response to the feedlot diet that they

are being fed? I believe it is the latter and not the former. Based on the demand for our customer’s cattle at all stages of production, I can assure you that our cattle perform. Our bulls don’t need to gain 5 lbs. per day to prove it. That kind of performance pres-sure on an animal, whose primary purpose is reproduction, is both irresponsible and disingenuous and ultimately leads to poor soundness.

This year’s offering has some new blood lines, and Red Crowfoot Moonshine is one of those. This dark red, power house has all the components to make great feeder cattle and fantastic replacment heifers. His mother has a 101.7 MPPA and his grandmother is still in the herd and his great-grandmother produced 12 calves with a 100.1 MPPA. That longevity and the ME of a -10 makes this stud a real Herd Sire candidate. Retaining 50% semen interest.

Redstone sons will be very rare going forward as there is little to no semen available. This will be the last year that any Redstone progeny will be sold in volume, so now is the time to take advantage. 403B shows incredible length of spine and thickness and is fortifi ed with a great female producing pedigree. His dam did a great job on her fi rst try. She is deep bodied, easy keeping and correct with an ideal udder. Most importantly, she calved on Feb 21st of this year. Highest IMF score in the sale at 6.54 for a 134 ratio. We would appreciate the opportunity to work with the new owner to collect and use this bull in our own herd. He is a natural fi t for our 9127, 425V and Troubadour daughters.

If you are looking for cutting edge, just move on. If you are looking for fantastic herd bulls with the benefi t of one of the very best cows I have ever owned, then pay lots of attention. These two full brothers have the potential to make anyone a fantastic set of cows and a great set of future herd bulls. I really appreciate this bull for his makeup and balance in both phenotype and perfor-mance. He is very complete from his 78 lb BW (93 ratio) to his growth ratios of 109 and 107 and on through his scan data. IMF 4.80 (114 ratio) REA 14.84 in. (110 ratio). My friend, Bruce, suggests a person has to sell his best bulls and let them go out and produce for people. Look at the performance and carcass in this Herd Bull. A 205 day weight over 700, and YW over 1250. You might be wondering if the cow bred back. This is a lot of heifer bull. Long and stout with a 78 lb BW and then blowing up to a 719 WW - 117 Ratio and 1254 YW for a 110 ratio. He was three days shy of 320 days of age when we had our ultrasound taken, but his actual measurements were: 4.29 IMF, 13.90 REA and .33 Bfat. Want to have him scanned again and make it offi cial? Another standout Redstone son. 402B developed a case of pinkeye the month prior to weaning and it seemed to have set him back a little despite a couple doses of medicine. It’s hard not to appreciate his EPD profi le, in-herd ratios and carcass data. However, what I appreciate most is his easy keeping, tanky dam that calved again on 2-24-15. His daughters will have built in carcass qualities and essential maternal traits to pass on for generations.
