Oostende
A first highlight of cleantech in Flanders is the capturing of potential from the North Sea: off-shore wind and wave energy
Flansea By 2020, an additional 42GW of off-shore
wind capacity will be installed in the North
Sea
The port of Oostende has been
restructured to accomodate this industry:
adapted port infrastructure, dedicated
industry terrains, R&D center and
incubator
Research project Flansea will build a
wave energy convertor based on the point
absorber technology
These wave energy convertors can be
placed in between the offshore windfarms,
between the turbines

Gent
At the port of Ghent, the Ghent Bio Energy Valley is located
Bio Base Europe, Europe’s first open innovation
and education center for the biobased economy.
Flanders and The Netherlands have joined
forces to build state-of-the-art research and
training facilities
The pilot plant in Ghent provides a one-stop
shop for the full production process..
..and will allow the development and optimisation
of biobased processes, upscaling up to
10M3/ton and pilotproduction of new bioproducts
to test market and application potential
The training center in Terneuzen (NL) will
provide demonstration- and educational
equipment for production of biodiesel, bio-
ethanol (1st & 2nd generation), biogas, heat
pumps, solar cells & wind turbines

Where previously coal mines were located, we now have Energyville & the EIT KIC on energy efficient buildings & cities
EIT KIC Energy & InnoEnergy
“The European Institute of Innovation and
Technology (EIT) launched its first 3
Knowledge and Innovation Communities
(KICs)”:
Climate change mitigation and
adaptiation: Climate KIC
Sustainable Energy: KIC InnoEnergy
Future Information and communication
society: ICT labs
“Energyville” will host:
Knowledge Center Smart and Efficient
cities
R&D center on balancing energy S&D;
Local renewable production; End-use
flexibility; Storage
Pilot Project Linear (smart grid, 1000
buildings, hybrid cars, renewable energy,
etc.)

The latest highlight is Flanders’ transformation into a “living lab” on sustainable mobility
A total 8 research institutes and 51 companies
are involved, including multinationals
Organised into 5 cooperative platforms, to test
technologies,services and concepts
More than 600 EV’s and chargings tations will
be installed throughout the region
Concepts like networked mobility, advanced
battery technology, integrated infrastructure
(microgrids, VPP, EV’s), user adoptability, new
businessmodels, services (payment clearing,
leasing,..) are to be tested
These 5 platforms welcome innovative ideas,
enterpreneurs wanting to test their business
models with partners in projects

A new government initiative regards sustainable materials management
Goals : •The use of primary resources in the production and consumption must decrease
•Maximal decrease of total resource waste
•Maximal decrease of material per unit of production and/or unit of consumption
•Maximal reduction of the total environmental impact when using material resources.
9 lines of actions with total of 45 projects
All parties involved : government, industrie,
knowledge institutes
Wants to be a motivator in Europe and lighting
example.
