Accessing the Sacred

Recognizing the needs, strengths, opportunities and challenges of people with disabilities, here at Chizuk Amuno we seek to

increase communal awareness. In truth, we all require each other’s respect and assistance.

Every person I know has special needs. Everyone I meet lives a reality that imposes limits on what he or she can do. We all require individual attention in the course of our lives. As a synagogue community, we need to talk about our real challenges and any obstacles that must be overcome so that all who wish to participate here and able to and can access the spirit and purpose of our sacred community.

A group of us at Chizuk Amuno, individuals with disabilities and the parents or relatives of people

with disabilities, want to do what more we can to make our synagogue community accessible and welcoming.

Currently, we provide large print prayer books and materials. We have a hearing assistance induction loop

in the Sanctuary and provide transcripts or sign language interpreting when requested. A ramp leads to the reading table so all may come to the Torah. Our Sanctuary seating includes wheelchair cut outs. We also have handicapped accessible bathrooms, elevators to the second floor, sidewalk ramps from the parking lot to the building, handicap assisted door operation at front entrance, and handicapped accessible water fountains.

In our schools, on an individual basis, students with special learning needs are mainstreamed as possible while receiving appropriate accommodations and individualized instruction. All of this is good, but there is more we can and ought to do.

I encourage you to tell us what your needs and ideas are and what respect and assistance our community can provide you or others whom you know. Please contact us through the rabbinic office. Together we’re working to become a more supportive and welcoming community.

The Amuno MinyanShabbat Prayer & Torah DiscussionMay 18, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Enjoyed by many, the Amuno Minyan is our lay-led participatory Shabbat morning service, a more intimate and informal setting for prayer and Torah study. Everyone is welcome in the Amuno Minyan: families and individuals, children and adults. If you are interested in leading services or reading Torah, please contact Rahel Lerner, [email protected], or Rabbi Wechsler, [email protected].

Et Ratzon ~ A Good TimePersonal Prayer & DiscoveryApril 13, 10-11:30 a.m.Join Rabbi Shulman to explore personal prayer through song and reflection. We’ll express the essential prayers of Shabbat in Hebrew and English and share in group Torah reading and study.

During Et Ratzon we sing and pray together, we talk personally, and we read and explore Torah. We also grow in our own synagogue skills. This is a concise, user-friendly service that includes English reflection and a specially edited prayer book.

Israel Sunday Fun-Day

Jewish excitement, tradition,

values, and fun – these define Rosenbloom Religious School. After my son Evan graduated from Goldsmith Early Childhood Education Center, my husband and I considered RRS as a place for him to continue his Jewish education and journey, aside from what we could give him at home. When he began at RRS, Evan was a typical “over scheduled” 5-year old and we struggled with the idea of signing him up for yet another extracurricular activity. After meeting with the warm and smiling Morah Pnina on the first day, we knew this was not just another activity; rather it was a nurturing environment where Evan would feel comfortable learning, growing, and exploring his Jewish identity. RRS is the gift that keeps on giving and we are confident that the RRS program will deliver rewards to Evan for the rest of his life, when he is a teenager, college student, parent, and grandparent.

Given my genuine excitement for RRS, I am delighted to serve on its Recruitment and Enrollment Committee to help introduce the school to other families like mine. The school will host its first exciting Israel Sunday Fun-Day for prospective families to experience up close the hands-on, experiential-focused learning program and to meet members of the RRS staff. Our theme is Israel – so please come prepared for a flight on Chizuk Amuno Airlines with nonstop service directly to Tel Aviv! We look forward to seeing you in Israel on Sunday, April 21 from 9:15-11 a.m.!
