For many companies, the network is

key to their business, and in some

cases, the network IS their business.

However, many networks aren’t

ready to handle the next generation

of requirements. Cloud computing,

mobile devices (and workers), along

with a multitude of new application

types (embedded video and IoT among

them), that all promise to improve

productivity, increase efficiency, and

create opportunities for new revenue

streams. But the underlying network

model represents more problem than

promise.

Networks have gradually become too

complex, too fragile, and too expensive

to deliver the required step-function

improvements in security, control, and

agility for what’s coming next.

And what’s coming next is BIG —

millions of applications, billions of

devices, trillions of transactions.

To fix the network, we need to change

the game — the context in which we

view the network. Simply put, the

network isn’t just about connecting

nodes or sharing information — it’s

about how you deliver services and

applications to the consumers of those

services and applications.

In doing this, we at 128 Technology

believe the network must be software-

based, session-oriented, and service-

centric. You’ll learn exactly what we

mean by each of these terms in this

book, but suffice it to say, this is not just

a whole new perspective on networks —

it’s a whole new way of understanding

how you can deliver value to your

business.

INTRODUCTION

At 128 Technology, we’ve developed a solution that’s

focused on enabling network operators to get down to

the business of delivering applications and services.

We do this through the 128 Technology Networking Platform

(128T), a software-based routing platform that natively

provides network-based security, control, and insight.

128T utilizes a Secure Vector Routing (SVR) architecture. SVR

is session-oriented, meaning it can recognize and control

stateful, bi-directional exchanges of data as they are routed

across networks — without the use of overlays or tunnels.

It is also inherently service-centric, enabling a far tighter

alignment between the network and the applications it

supports.

And because it’s entirely software-based, 128T can be put

anywhere and everywhere — this provides new levels of

security and intelligence throughout the network and

allows for a wide range of deployments, including wide-area

network (WAN), campus, data center environments, as well

as public and private clouds.

NEXT-GENERATION WAN

We all know the WAN needs an upgrade — from

experience, and because we’ve already said it

about eight times in this book.

In fact, a lot of the recent interest in SD-WAN solutions

is a clear sign that the existing WAN model isn’t keeping

up with the rapid shift in how businesses consume

applications. The WAN is no longer “just” the network

connection between headquarters and the branch

office — it’s being used for all sorts of new applications

— mobile work, real-time communications, cloud-based

software, fleet management, and more. Addressing the

requirements for these applications is creating more

complexity and cost than businesses are willing to put up

with.

The problem is that many of the “new” SD-WAN solutions

rely on “old” WAN techniques — such as tunnels or overlay

networks, additional middleboxes, hub-and-spoke

backhaul architectures, and perimeter security models.

What’s really needed is a solution that goes beyond

traditional SD-WAN offerings, addressing underlying

WAN challenges at the network level — while providing

all the benefits of traditional SD-WAN solutions.

The 128 Technology Networking Platform (128T) is

a session-based solution that features fine-grained

segmentation, security, and agility without the overhead,

cost, and scaling challenges of overlays. By removing the

real culprits of complexity and cost in the network, 128T

helps customers transform their networks into innovation

engines.

128T can create a full, routed mesh using multi-path

routing — this not only replaces the MPLS connections

without a hit to end user experience, it also lowers the

cost of connectivity for branch sites!

This is WAN done right using session orientation. Think of

it as SD-WAN sans the overlays — or NG-WAN as we like to

call it.

To stay competitive, you need to develop and deliver new revenue-generating

services faster than ever. But as we all know too well — you also need to maintain

those services so they remain secure and reliable for your consumers. Neither of these

are easy tasks.

New customers are the lifeblood of growing businesses — especially those offering “as-a-

service” solutions. Yet provisioning and configuring secure and reliable network access

can be cumbersome, slow, and expensive. The 128 Technology Networking Platform

(128T) provides the ability to spin up new services and establish network connectivity

faster, cheaper, and with more confidence.

As we said earlier, keeping customers happy is critical. With 128T, you can take control of

how your consumers experience your applications by getting closer to them — literally.

128T does this by extending Secure Vector Routing right to the customer premise. This

gives you — the application owner — more control over the service level experienced by

the customer by moving the SLA boundary.

Extending the SLA boundary means you’ve got a handle on network Quality of

Service, end-to-end Zero Trust Security, and real-time visibility and analytics into how

each service is performing.

Many of the best practices learned

at hyperscale data centers —

like those originated by Google and

Amazon — are starting to make their

way into the data centers of enterprises

and service providers. Nearly every

data center modernization effort has a

“software-defined” component in which

all elements of the infrastructure are

virtualized and automated. This idea

includes software-defined networking

and usually involves some form of virtual

network overlays (VNOs) — designed to

abstract networking from the physical

networks on which they ride.

But here’s the problem with current

VNOs — their reliance on overlays

themselves.

First, overlays are largely tunnel-based,

which can cause significant networking

overhead, fragmentation issues, scaling

challenges, and operational costs — not to

mention rendering useless most security

and monitoring systems.

Second, many network virtualization

overlays largely depend on service

chaining schemes to insert advanced

network functions (firewalls, load

balancers, etc.). Not only does this create

more complexity — it creates more

network overhead.

The way we see it, time is ripe for a data

center network solution that doesn’t

need tunnels AND can consolidate

multiple network functions.

With the 128 Technology Networking

Platform, you can natively distribute

application intelligence, fine-grained

segmentation, load balancing, and access

control throughout the data center. This

not only eliminates the unnecessary

overhead or lack of visibility caused

by overlay techniques, but it enables

dynamic workload mobility and speeds

response to evolving security threats.

Data Center Interconnect (DCI)

solutions have traditionally focused

on optimizing bandwidth and reducing

latency to ensure business continuity and

disaster recovery — but include enormous

complexity and cost. Most DCI solutions

involve dedicated transport links to deliver

reliability, security, and performance — yet

these are difficult to set up and maintain,

expensive, and often underutilized.

As the number and type of interconnects

increase, network owners are going to

have to rethink their approach to DCI.

The 128 Technology Networking Platform

(128T) provides dynamic and secure

multi-path routing for data center

interconnection — without relying on

dedicated circuits, overlays, or domain

stretching.

Not only does 128T reduce the need

for expensive transport connections, it

optimizes bandwidth use across all of the

available connectivity options.

For example, with adaptive encryption,

128T knows what information has been

encrypted natively in the application

and what’s not. From there, you are able

to encrypt what needs to be encrypted

and leave the already encrypted alone —

saving bandwidth and reducing potential

latency.

CLOUD INTERCONNECT

Rapid enterprise adoption of cloud services is creating

increasingly complex ecosystems that are placing

unprecedented demands on network architectures.

Applications are increasingly distributed across multiple

data centers. New traffic patterns are emerging

within and across data centers and clouds. Network

virtualization is redefining how we think about end-to-

end internetworking. The sheer number of data centers

that require interconnectivity push legacy Layer 2 and

overlay-based approaches to the limits.

This is prompting enterprises and service providers to

re-examine their cloud and data center connectivity

approaches.

The 128 Technology Networking Platform can solve

the challenges of secure cloud interconnect by

transforming complex cloud interconnect ecosystems

into smart, secure, and seamless fabrics by allowing

you to:

MPLS

Internet

¾ Hypersegment across the cloud interconnect with a

dynamic end-to-end segmentation and multi-tenant

architecture

¾ Replace static and complex point-to-point overlay-based

models with a dynamic routed approach

¾ Reduce cost of deploying, operating, and troubleshooting

with fewer network elements, centralized orchestration

and policy management, and a dynamic scale-out policy

exchange approach

¾ Deliver Zero Trust Security to all your interconnected cloud

applications

You’re in control of how your consumers use your

applications at all times — while providing a superior

service.

How to Build a New Kind of Network | 11

For both service providers and

enterprises, the requirements of the

network aren’t that difficult to figure

out.

Service providers want to deliver new

services and applications quickly and

with fine-grained control over security

and service levels.

Enterprises are looking to align the

services they consume with the

objectives of the business and meet

end user expectations for applications

and performance levels.

What if there was a networking

company that really tried to create

network technology with these needs

first?

What if instead of relying on an

outdated network mindset, we took a

fresh look at networking and placed

services and applications at the center?

What if we could do that without

disrupting the existing network

infrastructure that’s already in place?

There is a company doing all of that.

128 Technology is reshaping the way

organizations design, deploy, and

operate real-world networks by making

them dramatically simpler, smarter,

and more secure — it’s going to fix the

router — and ultimately the network —

as we know it.
