Five increases service in a highlyfragmented marketFive is to launch ‘+1’ services for its two digital channels, Five Life and Five US,on satellite in early autumn this year. A ‘+1’ service is a repeat of a wholechannel, time-shifted by one hour.United Kingdom - 05.07.2007

Viewers will soon have two chances to watchFive Life and Five US programmes, which willbe re-broadcast an hour later on two seconda-ry digital special-interest channels.

Five is expanding its digital family of channelsto include a so-called '+1' service, a recentphenomenon in the highly fragmented TV mar-ket. Broadcasts of all the programmes shownby a channel will be shown again on seconda-ry channels one hour later, to give viewers theopportunity to watch the programmes whenthey want. This kind of arrangement is particu-larly attractive to working people, who oftendon't manage to get home in time to watchtheir favourite programmes.

Five CEO Jane Lighting explai-ned: "I'm delighted we can offerthese new services to our viewersless than a year after so success-fully launching Five US and FiveLife".

Talking to Backstage, MarkWhite, Executive Director Salessaid: "Basically we're looking towork our existing programmeinventory as hard as we can and'+1' channels have already pro-

ved to be an effective way of achieving that aimin the UK multi-channel market. Additionally, the capacity we've secured will allow each ofour +'1's to sit next to the core channel - webelieve that to be a massive commercialadvantage and a real addition to viewer choice. At the end of the day though, it's all about gro-wing audience which in turn will generate morerevenue to Five."

For a long time already, the British TV markethas been giving viewers a broader choice thanis available in any other European country, withmore than 400 digital channels on offer there. And even though the market shares of the Top

15 digital special-interest channels may seemlow at first glance, at between 2.6 and 0.7 percent, it should be borne in mind that evenchannels 35 to 40 still attain market shares inexcess of 0.2 per cent. This shows just howfragmented the British TV market already is.

Digital TV has been a growth market in GreatBritain for a decade already. The latest study ondigital television conducted by British mediawatchdog Ofcom, entitled "Digital TelevisionProgress Report", shows that 80 per cent ofhouseholds in Great Britain already receivetheir TV broadcasts digitally. A majority of those80 per cent use digital terrestrial television, which has enjoyed a massive and very swiftrise in popularity over the past four yearsthanks to the success of the Freeview platform. In the popularity stakes, this mode of digitalreception is followed by digital satellite TV (40per cent) and digital cable TV (15 per cent).

In other European countries, like Germany andFrance, the numbers for DTT reception areconsiderably lower, at 25 per cent and 50 percent respectively. Competition inGreat Britain is tough, and mostdigital channels are dependenton advertising revenue. "It'sbecome an enormously com-plex, fragmented market. Thereare over 400 channels across thethree digital platforms - Satellite,Terrestrial and Cable. As a resultit's a constant battle for share ofviewer attention. Despite thisboth Five Life and Five US haveperformed strongly since launch.Over 28 million people havealready tuned-in and viewingshares are rising steadily. Thelaunch of these '+1' channels willonly add to their success" saysMark White.

With more than 28 million vie-wers, the digital channels FiveLife and Five US, launched inOctober 2006, have already clai-med a place amongst the Top 15non-terrestrial channels. Five Lifeand Five US are freely availablevia cable, satellite, DSL andFreeview.

Five US offers viewers the best American tele-vision, including blockbuster films, the CSIseries and also, since recently, Dr. House. FiveUS will also soon start exclusive broadcasts ofthe critically acclaimed series Dirt, featuringFriends star Courteney Cox.

Five Life is aimed at a young, female audience, offering a programme mix of drama, entertain-ment and documentaries. Its programmesinclude the popular Australian soap Home andAway and the documentary series Extraordi-nary People.

According to Five, the secondary channels FiveLife+1 and Five US+1 will initially only be avai-lable by satellite via the pay-TV platform SkyDigital, not yet in the DVB-T Freeview packageor over the cable network. Starting in August, the British Channel 4 will also be launching a'+1' service.
