Welcome to the 2009-2010 OLLI programming year! Along with autumn breezes, the fall brings a fresh new term of engaging courses, plus many exciting changes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida International University. We are now part of a newly formed division within FIU—University College. University College can show you how to take steps to turn your challenges into opportunities and, through OLLI@FIU, turn your retirement into an invigorating learning adventure. New offi ces (and new website). We have moved into our own offi ce suite in Academic II within the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus (note, however, that our phone, fax, and e-mail information remains the same). Th e offi ce suite has been designed to encourage and facilitate opportunities for you to comfortably interact with OLLI staff and fellow students. Our new offi ces are now more centrally located on campus—near the university library, student center, bookstore, new cafeteria food court, pool and gym. Plans are underway to use the walls of our new surroundings as a living museum to showcase OLLI student art/hobby projects. We are also very excited about our new home on the web: http://olli.fi u.edu. Make sure to pay us a visit there, as well, and browse all of our new user-friendly enhancements and features.

Extended classroom options. As part of University College, we will now have access to more varied classroom venues. Fall classes will be held at the Kovens Conference Center, the Wolfe University Center, and two classrooms housed in our new offi ce suite in Academic II. Th ese new classroom arrangements will allow more fl exible course scheduling, greater control over the room allocation, and considerable savings in facility costs. Th e new venues’ more central campus location will not only allow for greater access to campus amenities, as previously described, but will also allow greater opportunities for OLLI students to more easily interact with the rest of the university community—a chance for the “seniors” to mingle with the more junior students in a shared learning environment.

Increased Community Involvement. While OLLI operates within a state university, it is important to point out that OLLI does not receive any state funding. As a self-sustaining unit, OLLI is supported solely by membership and course fees, private grant funds, and the kind donations and support of members like you. We try to keep membership and course fees very aff ordable for our members; however, it is becoming increasingly challenging to sustain non-traditional, innovative programming in these diffi cult economic times. As the university faces tight economic challenges, all departments and units have been asked to fi nd creative cost-savings measures and to encourage greater community involvement. For these reasons, we ask that you please consider supporting the OLLI programs you love by providing a tax-deductible donation and/or by sharing your time and expertise with us as a volunteer (the registration form inside this catalog has an area for making donations and you may also visit http://olli.fi u.edu/support.html). Now more than ever, your support is crucial to secure the future continuation of this program, so that we may continue to off er members the high quality courses, instructors, and benefi ts all deserve.

As you review the fall catalog, we hope you will fi nd courses that will enrich your commitment to lifelong learning. If you are a new OLLI member, welcome and enjoy! If you are a returning OLLI student, thank you for your continued involvement. For new and returning students alike, we greatly appreciate your interest in and support of OLLI@FIU and hope you share our great enthusiasm about all these new, exciting changes!

A message to our OLLI members:

Living in interesting times, as the ancient Chinese curse put it, means we have to try to understand what ever-changing times means to us, to our community, to the United States, indeed to the world. We need the tools to enable us to fully grasp the enormity of what faces the future. Th e economy may be improving, but how soon will normalcy return? Is the threat of multiple wars and rumors of wars growing or lessening? Is our environment on the brink of disaster? And what is being done to deal with housing, education, employment, political reform, healthcare and all the normal problems which are becoming even more of a concern than usual? In this class, we try to relate the world today to the history that created it, and look to our times to help us see the future. Th is is not a lecture class, it is a participatory weekly round table, where we share ideas and possibilities, and where we seek to bring together history, economics, society, culture and—above all—our personal understanding of the world we now face.

According to comedian John Stewart, “On an average day seven minutes of news happens. Yet, there are currently three full-time, 24-hour news networks.” In any event, most news, as reported, whether in print, via camera, microphone or on the Internet, is a one-way proposition; we, as readers, listeners and consumers of news, rarely have a chance to interact—to “talk back.” Th is course seeks to give students the chance to engage in what we will call “the missing factor” of two-way communication. In each session, we will review the week’s leading stories, issues and events, and avail ourselves of the opportunity to question, understand, discuss and give opinions on what’s going on in this rapidly, dynamically changing

world. Additionally, we will examine the diff erent ways in which leading media outlets cover the news, with an eye toward understanding what, if any, bias may exist.

All the News Th at Fits: A Weekly Discussion of Headline Stories

Whether in newspapers or magazines, on cable or broadcast television, AM-FM radio or the Internet, news is a twenty-four-hour-a-day, three-hundred-sixty-fi ve-days-a-year proposition. In this course, we will review and discuss the week’s most important news items, look at the stories and personalities “behind the headlines,” and see what biases might be found. Weekly topics will be drawn from the worlds of politics, international relations, economics, science, crime and show business.

One of Hollywood’s most endearing debates is over precisely what makes a movie great: the actor, the screenplay or the director? If one sees movie-making as the ultimate collaborative art, the answer would have to be—the director, who has the ultimate responsibility for taking words, ideas, setting and ego, and then synthesizing them into celluloid art. Th is course will present the biographies of six of fi lmdom’s greatest directors, and then off er a critical examination of what, in the opinion of the instructor, is their greatest contribution to the

cinematic art: Th e Th ief of Baghdad (Raoul Walsh); Th e General (Buster Keaton); Ninotchka (Ernst Lubitsch); Casablanca (Michael Curtiz); Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean); and Dead End (William Wyler).

Movie making is perhaps the most unique, demanding and symbiotic of all art forms. For where else is a creative process more sharply defi ned by the interests of one’s investors, or one investor’s success more completely dependent upon the spontaneity of art? More than anyone else, it is the director who stands astride with this ‘Scylla’ of Wall Street and ‘Charybdis’ of art. His/her responsibilities are legion: everything from dramaturge to psychologist. Out of the literally thousands of men and women who have directed motion pictures, fewer than 50 can be considered truly great or inspired. Our cinematic masters include: John Ford (1895-1973); Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980); Howard Hawks (1896-1977); Frank Capra 1897-1991); Edward Dmytryk (1908-1999); and Billy Wilder (1908-2002).
