which took place in May at the Auto-Tech Building, was a huge success! The art exhibit is one of many ways we celebrate our students’ achievements in art. Art classes help students learn to think creatively about the world and become more well-rounded citizens.
Fitzgerald Health Center The Fitzgerald Health Center is part of the Henry Ford
Health System Department of Pediatrics and is available during the summer to provide health services including sports and school physicals, vaccines, visits for minor illness or injury, and mental health services for those 10-21 years old. The health center is located inside of Fitzgerald High School.
• Any sports physical completed after April 15 of this year is valid until the end of the next school year (June 2017).
• All physicals are scheduled by appointment. There is paperwork that must be obtained from the health center that is in addition to the school sports form.
• All patients can receive care regardless of their health insurance status, legal status and/or ability to pay. Health insurance is billed for appropriate services through agreements in place with the health insurance companies. The health center can provide information and assistance in obtaining Medicaid health insurance if medical insurance is needed.
For more information, call (586) 759-9070. The hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to noon and 1-3:30 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m. to noon. The health center may be closed other days, so call ahead to schedule your appointment.

Message from the Superintendent
What a year it’s been! Whether it’s our 5th graders graduating to Chatterton Middle School, our
8th graders graduating to Fitzgerald High School, or our Class of 2016 seniors
graduating out into the world — our “graduates” continue
to impress us with their enthusiasm for learning
and their creativity, humor, willingness to give back and determination to succeed. We are proud of their achievements in
the classroom, in the band room, in robotics
competitions, on the field and in the communities in
which they volunteer. We hope you’re as proud of them as we are.
We also know that their success starts with having strong support at home. We’d like to acknowledge the sacrifices families like yours have made to give them the best chance to succeed. You deserve just as many awards and accolades as they do! This dedication is what makes the “Fitzgerald Family” truly special. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, custodian, bus driver, teacher, support staff or community member, we’re all in it together for the kids. It takes a village to raise a child, and the awards, honors, accolades and scholarships that our students have earned are testaments to the strength of the “Fitzgerald Family.” As we wrap up a fantastic school year and prepare for a new chapter, I hope you enjoy the last month of summer. We look forward to welcoming our
students and families back in September!
Sincerely,
Barbara VanSweden
Free Preschool
Fitzgerald offers the state-funded Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) free of charge to eligible 4-year-old
children. Children must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2016 and potty-trained. To be considered for the program, families and children must participate in a preschool screening, parent interview and student observation. Enrollment is limited to the children determined to be most in need.
The program is designed to promote growth in the areas of language, social/emotional development and cognitive, fine motor, gross motor and self-help skills. There will be about eight children per teacher. A unique feature of the program will be personalized home visits and group parent meetings.
Students meet Monday through Thursday, 8:15 – 11:15 a.m. or noon – 3 p.m. Register for our GSRP Preschool online today by visiting fitz.k12.mi.us. Registration packets are also available in the Early Childhood Center and Westview office located in Westview Elementary School.
Transitioning into Kindergarten
In April, preschoolers at the Early Childhood Center and their parents were invited to visit the kindergarten classrooms
at Westview and Mound Park. They met the teachers and principal, took a tour of the classrooms and the building, “shopped” for school supplies, visited the cafeteria to have a snack, participated in literacy activities and planted sunflower seeds to take home. The “Transitioning into Kindergarten” event helps preschoolers adjust to a new school and is a great opportunity for families to learn about kindergarten, meet the staff and become familiar with the building and its procedures.
Soon-to-be Kindergarteners Invited to Popsicles on the Playground Aug. 24
Families with students entering kindergarten this fall are invited to join Westview Principal Mrs. Swalec or Mound
Park Principal Mrs. Griessel for Popsicles on the Playground on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The Westview event starts at 10 a.m. and the Mound Park event starts at 11:15 a.m. Children and parents will do an art activity, listen to storytellers, enjoy popsicles and play on the playground. Popsicles on the Playground is a fantastic way to meet other children and parents who will be attending kindergarten.

Kindergarten Registration is Open
Families residing in the district are encouraged to register their child for kindergarten at any time. You can register
your child by visiting fitz.k12.mi.us to complete the online registration packet. Please call the FPS office at (586) 757-1750 or Westview’s main office at (586) 757-5520 if you have questions about the enrollment process.
The kindergarten curriculum actively engages children in age-appropriate, hands-on learning experiences that build on the strengths, interests and needs of the individual child. It provides experiences that will help each child’s academic, social and emotional development. Each child will learn responsibility and develop decision-making skills to help them become self-reliant and independent in a safe and nurturing environment. We’re excited to welcome a new group of kindergartners this fall, and we’re looking forward to what the future holds for the future high school class of 2029!
Kindergarten Eligibility Information
Students who are 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2016 are eligible to attend kindergarten. A Michigan law enacted
a few years ago changed the minimum age requirement for a child enrolling in kindergarten. Michigan’s “cutoff date”
was previously Dec. 1, which was historically later than most other states. The cutoff date change was phased in over three years, with the cutoff date being Nov. 1 for students starting kindergarten in the 2013-14 school year, Oct. 1 for the 2014-15 school year, and Dec. 1 for the 2015-16 school year and all future years.
If the child turns 5 years old after Sept. 1 but on or before Dec.1, the child’s parent or legal guardian can complete a Kindergarten Notification Form and speak with the principal of the elementary school in which they wish to enroll. The district can make a recommendation about the child’s readiness for school, though the parent or legal guardian retains the sole discretion to enroll their child.
Schools of Choice Enrollment is Open
The Schools of Choice enrollment period is open until Sept. 9 for K-2 students who reside in Macomb County and for
kindergarteners outside Macomb County. Families may enroll online by going to fitz.k12.mi.us/register and clicking on the “Schools of Choice” button or by picking up Schools of Choice enrollment applications at any of our schools. After applications are turned in, families who are approved will receive acceptance letters in the mail with instructions for registering.

Westview WarehouseUpon completion of the 4th grade economics unit, students in
Mrs. Johnson’s, Mr. Mills’ and Mrs. Benson’s classrooms did a culminating project called “Westview Warehouse” in which the students created their own business to sell either a good or a service. They created a business plan, an advertisement and business stations. They learned various economic terms and advertising strategies and practiced their public speaking skills to “sell” their good or service to other 4th graders.
A month prior to the sale day, the students earned “Wolf Bucks” for various behaviors and rewards and used this money to purchase items from other businesses on the sale day. The students’ “profits” were amazing, and they had a blast from beginning to end. They used the profits from their businesses to then shop some more. The Westview Warehouse project teaches students about basic concepts of entrepreneurship and helps them apply the economic principles and terms they’ve been learning in class by putting them into practice.

Mound Park Students Raise $535 During Relay RecessRelay Recess has become a treasured tradition at Mound Park,
and students have been participating in it for the past seven years. This June, students raised $535 during Relay Recess to help support the American Cancer Society in its work to cure cancer.
The students participated in a series of spirit days to promote healthy habits. At the culminating event, they pledged to walk for a half-hour and participate in various activities.
Mound Park’s 5th Grade Clap OutMound Park 5th graders took “a walk of honor” on the last day
of school. The students started their journey in Mound Park by entering through the front doors, so it was only fitting that they end their journey by exiting through those same doors. As parents lined the street of Cyman and awaited the students’ exit, the 5th graders traveled through the halls one last time. The halls were lined by kindergarten through 4th grade students, who clapped as the 5th graders moved through the building. The 5th graders were joined by the office staff as they walked out of Mound Park’s front doors for the last time as elementary students. Exciting new experiences, friends, teachers and learning opportunities await them as they begin a new chapter at Chatterton Middle School this fall!

RoboticsThe CMS Robotics teams had a successful year! Chatterton
students participated in FIRST Robotics for the second year, competing against other area middle schools. FIRST Robotics develops the next generation of innovators by teaching students about robotics and fostering the critical thinking skills and self-confidence they will need to succeed in the 21st-century job market. The dedicated students met after school and on the weekends and put in a lot of hard work, time and energy into a very rewarding season. Team 9572 placed second in tournament play and fourth overall at the Howell competition, and Team 9496 earned the determination award. Congratulations to these hardworking Chargers!

FHS Auto Tech Program Receives $10,000 Grant from Ingersoll Rand Foundation
This May, the FHS automotive technology program was awarded $10,000 in grant funding from Ingersoll Rand to improve
classrooms and upgrade equipment for students in automotive technology programs. The funds will also be used for supplies, instructor training and curriculum. Ingersoll Rand is a global leader in power tools and the Official Power Tools of NASCAR®.
Automotive technology is becoming increasingly sophisticated, and employers prefer to hire automotive technicians and mechanics that have completed a formal training program — such as the one at FHS.
FHS Band Teacher Named Quarterfinalist for National Music Educator Award
For the third consecutive year, Brian Roelandt has been named among the nation’s top 290 educators to qualify for the 2017 Music Education Award presented by the GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy. More than 3,300 nominations were submitted from all 50 states, and he is one of only 14 educators selected from Michigan. The educators are selected from U.S. public and private schools at all grade levels, ranging from kindergarten through college
Fifteen semifinalists will be announced in September, and the top honoree will be invited to attend the 59th Annual GRAMMY Awards ceremony and a range of GRAMMY Foundation events. We wish Mr. Roelandt the best of luck!

Exciting Renovations to Chatterton Middle SchoolCrews have been hard at work this summer on the Chatterton
renovations, which kicked off after students left for summer break. This summer’s improvements include a new location for the main office to improve safety for students and staff, a more-clearly designated front entrance and energy-efficient lighting for after-school and evening events. The renovations are the first phase of a multi-year renovation plan for Chatterton.
The main office is being moved from the center of the building to the front entrance, which will make the office more accessible to parents and allow office staff to monitor the flow of visitors. During the school day, visitors will have to pass through the office before entering the interior of the school, making the building even safer for students and staff.
Additional improvements include dividing the former home economics classroom into four new classroom spaces to better utilize the space and improving the exterior façade of the planetarium that is visible from the driveway off of Ryan Road.
The renovations to Chatterton are funded through a voter-approved sinking fund, which is a limited property tax collected to fund major repairs and renovations to district school buildings. The tax is levied each year, and the revenue generated from it is used to address urgent building improvements identified by the school district. The Board of Education approved $1 million for the renovations back in March.
