2 RECOMMENDATIONS
2.1 INSTALLING THE BOARDPrior to performing any action on a FITWIN board, ensurethat all of your configuration, (microcomputer and relatedperipherals) is powered-down.Carefully lock all connections to avoid any accidental dis-connection during operation.
2.2 LINK CABLESTo avoid the different forms of environment related inter-ference, the link cables between the CPU and itsperipherals must be shielded.Connecting an RS-232 peripheral to an RS-422 interface isunadvisable, given the incompatible voltage levels onthese two interfaces.
2.3 CONNECTING THE LINK CABLESEnsure that the microcomputer and its peripherals arepowered-down before attempting any link cable connec-tion/disconnection.

FITWIN page 19
Refer to sub-section 5.1 to continue the installation of asecond FITWIN board.
5.2 ADVANCED CONFIGURATION
5.2.1 Modifying channel parameters
After an installation phase performed using the installationassistant, it is always possible to manually change any ofthe proposed channel parameter settings:• Click on the “Name” fields for the channel to modify
and select a new name from the pull-down list.• Click on the “Address” fields for the channel to mod-
ify and select an available address from the pull-downlist.
• Click on the “ Interrupts ” fields for the channel tomodify and select an available interrupt number fromthe pull-down list.
) Note :To avoid address or interrupt conflicts between FITWINand any other peripheral installed in your computer, theconfigurator uses an asterisk to mark any resources(Name, address, IRQ) already used by the system. It ishowever possible to validate a FITWIN board configurationusing resources that conflict with those used by anotherboard: the configurator will then display a box to promptyou to correct the conflict. If you do not make any correc-tions, it is up to you to make any changes necessary toyour system so as to release the resources that you haveassigned to FITWIN.
5.2.2 Setting FIFO buffer parameters
Run the FITWIN configurator and click on the “Advancedconfiguration ” button.
FITWIN page 20
Select the channel for which you wish to modify the FIFOparameters.Increase or reduce the size of the FIFO buffers to improveperformance or resolve connection problems. (Generally, the default parameters settings obtained by clicking on theDefault button suit all applications).
5.2.3 Extended mode
The extended mode lets FITWIN communicate at speedsof over 115200 baud.Run the FITWIN configurator and click on the “Advancedconfiguration ” button.Click on the “Extended mode ” box.
5.3 IF PROBLEMS OCCUR Click on the configurator’s diagnostics thumbnail todisplay the “ fitwin.log ” file.
Use the configurator’s “Resource ” thumbnail tocheck that FITWIN’s parameters do not conflict with thoseof another peripheral. Use the configurator’s “Jumpers ”thumbnail to ensure that the (one or more) FITWINboard(s) are correctly configured (board number 1 – boardnumber 2).
One of the FITWIN serial ports is experiencingproblems sending or receiving characters
Set the FITWIN parameters to use a different IRQ.
On some machines, the I/O address range from200h to 207h is not accessible correctly, so the serialport configured in this address range will not workcorrectly.
Use the next address range (208h to 210h).
FITWIN page 21

6.1.1 General
The FITWIN board allows adding up to eight high perform-ance serial ports to your computer. Each board supportsfour ports and you can use two boards simultaneously. With FITWIN all of the serial ports on the same board mayuse the same Interrupt, thereby releasing resources forother peripherals.
6.1.2 Installing FITWIN software
• Place the CD in the drive,• Run the “ setup.exe ” program located in the
\fitwin\win311\fra directory and follow the instructionsdisplayed by the installation assistant.
6.2 THE FITWIN CONFIGURATORThe FITWIN configurator may be accessed from the con-trol panel. It allows installing up to two FITWIN boards.
FITWIN page 22
6.3 INSTALLING A FITWIN BOARDClick on the “FITWIN board ” icon in the Windows controlpanel. For each channel to install, specify: the port name, the I/Oaddress and the interrupt used.
6.3.1 Choosing the port name
Port N°1 on the board must always be configured to allowthe board to operate.Select a name in the range COM1 to COM9. If your PC al-ready has two serial ports called COM1 and COM2, youmust select a name in the range COM3 to COM9.Each serial port on your PC must have a unique name.Prefer the use of names in sequence, starting from the firstavailable name.If one (or more) channels on the FITWIN board are notused, select "None " in the corresponding "Name" field.
Avoid configurations with "holes" for ports COM1 to COM4(e.g. COM1, COM3, COM4...) as these will be reorganizedby the machine’s BIOS to become COM1, COM2, COM3.
6.3.2 Choosing the I/O address
For each port to configure, choose a unique I/O address(one not used by another peripheral). The I/O addresses for the FITWIN ports do not have to beconsecutive ones (this makes it possible, for example toavoid addressing conflicts with peripherals that use a wideaddress range). When ports COM1 to COM4 are selected, the configura-tion window proposes the default addresses generallyused by these ports. If you have any doubts on the choiceof an address, use these default addresses.
6.3.3 Choosing the Interrupt Used by Each Port
Each of the computer’s peripherals must use a differentinterrupt line.Identify the interrupts available on the machine.
FITWIN page 23
Assign an available interrupt (one not used by another pe-ripheral) to the FITWIN ports to configure. If there are few available interrupts left in your system, usea single interrupt to manage all of FITWIN’s serial ports.(To simplify FITWIN installation, using a single interruptcommon to all of the ports to install is recommended). If you intend to use one of FITWIN’s ports to connect themouse, never share its interrupt with any other port on theboard.Do not use interrupts 3 and 4 if your machine already hastwo serial ports called COM1 and COM2.
6.3.4 Validating the Configuration
Click on the Install button after specifying the name, I/Oaddress and the interrupt used by each port. If no conflictis detected, the program will prompt you to update thesystem files (config.sys and system.ini) and then restartyour system. If a conflict occurs, the configurator will inform you by dis-playing an error message during installation. You mayignore this message if you intend to remove the portcausing the conflict once installation is complete.
) Warning : After each installation or de-installation op-eration the system must be restarted for the newconfiguration to take effect.
6.4 IF PROBLEMS OCCUR The communication ports do not work correctly:
Refer to the “ fitwin.log ” troubleshooting file tocheck that board initialization was performed correctly.
Check that the port parameters (Name, Address,Interrupt) do not conflict with those of other peripherals.
If your mouse is connected to one of the FITWIN 95ports, ensure that this port does not share the interrupt thatit uses with any other port on the board.
 Perform a “Cold restart":
Exit Windows, shutdown the computer using thepower “On/Off” switch, power-up the computer once againand restart Windows.

7.1 INSTALLING THE FILES REQUIRED BY FITWIN• Create an installation directory on your hard disk
drive. For example c:\fitwin,• Copy the files contained in \fitwin\dos to the installa-
tion directory.
7.1.1 Modifying the Config.sys File to AcceptFITWIN
• Add the following declaration line to the config.sysfile:
Device=(path)\fitwin.exe/f:(path)\configuration_file /l:(path)\log_file /c:language
Where :
(path) : is the access path to the FITWIN directoryConfiguration_File : is the file where the channelname, interrupt and address are stated.Log_File : contains the initialization report for FITWINboards that is generated each time the machine isinitialized.Language : fra for French, eng for English or deu forGerman.
Example:De-vice=c:\fitwin\fitwin.exe/f:c:\fitwin\fitwin.cnf/l:c:\fitwin\fitwin.log /c:fra
7.1.2 Creating a Configuration for FITWINParameters
• Create a configuration file in the installation directorytaking care to follow the syntax shown below for eachconfigured serial channel:
COMxBase =adr
FITWIN page 26
COMxIrq =irqCOMxFitwin =n
With:X : the channel’s COM number.Adr : the channel’s address (in hexadecimal notation).irq : the interrupt used by the channel.n : the channel number on the board.from 1 to 4 for channels on the first board.from 5 to 8 for channels on the second board.
To validate the drawer command function on aFITWINTPV board, add the following line to the con-figuration file:
TIROIRxFitwin=adrWith:X : taking a value of 1 for board n°1 and 2 for boardn° 2Adr : the address of the drawer command, (same syn-tax as for channels).
Example:To configure a FITWIN board with four channels and thefollowing parameters:Channel 1: COM3 with address 220 and interrupt 5Channel 2: COM4 with address 228 and interrupt 5Channel 3: COM5 with address 230 and interrupt 5Channel 4: COM6 with address 238 and interrupt 5
The configuration file will look like:COM3Base=220hCOM3Irq=5COM3Fitwin=1COM4Base=228hCOM4Irq=5COM4Fitwin=2COM5Base=230hCOM5Irq=5COM5Fitwin=3COM6Base=238hCOM6Irq=5COM6Fitwin=4
To set the channel parameters• Shutdown the machine and restart it for the changes
to take effect.• Refer to the initialization report (log_file) to check that
the FITWIN program correctly initialized the board.
FITWIN page 27
7.1.3 Channel Parameter Settings (speed/parity ...)
For standard COM channels (a CMOS value), used theMODE.COM command. Otherwise, use a specific applica-tion.
Important notes:MS-DOS will only be able to directly recognize the four ba-sic COM ports (COM 1 to 4) with their standard IRQs andaddresses:
COM1: address 3F8, IRQ4COM2: address 2F8, IRQ3COM3: address 3E8, IRQ4COM4: address 2E8, IRQ3
) It is possible to set the channels on the same boardto the same IRQ; but it is impossible to share an IRQ be-tween two boards.
) It is impossible, for example, to have a standardCOM1 (IRQ4) on a board and a standard COM3 (IRQ4) onanother board.
If the board must be used with MS-DOS and WINDOWS3.X, use the WINDOWS configuration tools. The ports de-clared to the standard IRQs and addresses will also beaccessible in MS-DOS.
7.2 IF PROBLEMS OCCUR Check the contents of the fitwin.log file generatedby the FITWIN program on start-up.
Check the syntax of the FITWING program’s entrypoint in the config.sys file.
Check the configuration file (fitwin.cnf ) syntax.
Check that the parameters assigned to FITWIN donot conflict with those of another board.
Ensure that your MS-DOS application is able to cor-rectly access the FITWIN uarts when a non-standardconfiguration is used (channels higher than COM4 and ad-dresses other than 3F8, 2F8.
