What is Center-Based Instruction? Learning centers are areas of the classroom which can be

used to introduce, develop, reinforce, or extend a concept or to facilitate development of skills.

Learning centers utilize brain-based principles of active learning and constructivism which supports the student's exploration, application and explanation of new information.

Individual student learning styles can be addressed through the variety of activities and choices available in the centers which motivate students to become more independent, self-directed and responsible for their own learning.

Three Areas of Center-Based Instruction Teacher preparation – Planning is the key to

success in developing quality and effective learning centers.

Center Preparation – Each center must be carefully organized.

Student Preparation – Because center work is independent, students need to know how to become independent learners.
