Last month, a very special dog died at the age of 15 and I would like to dedicate my letter from the editor to Bleu and two of my long time friends Todd Watters and Lesley Miller.
A number of years ago, before I began the Animal Print or lived with a herd of dogs, Bleu was a typical ball obsessed Springer Spaniel, who would rather run with his dog dad Todd than play with other dogs. That was until an ill mannered 7 month old stray Shepherd mix landed on my doorstep. Bleu and the dog who would later become the love of my life, were instant friends. Bleu seemed to take to him like a long lost brother and this began their decade long friendship.
Through witnessing Todd and Bleu’s relationship and the bond that formed so instantaneously with Bleu and Harvey, I began to understand how all the late night walks, hair on every surface, drool (well that was really Bleu’s thing), vet expenses, chewed shoes and all the other “joys” of dog companionship, were worth more than any words could ever describe. Bleu was truly the catalyst for my decision to adopt Harvey and for that I will be eternally grateful.
Over the years, Bleu has not only remained Harvey’s dearest dog friend but has also graced the pages of the Animal Print on many occasions, modeled in our doggie fashion show, manned our dog kissing booth, marched in parades, sat for photo shoots and was my go to dog whenever a well behaved dog was needed (sorry Harvey). His happy go lucky personality and gentle charm touched countless friends and strangers alike. Harvey and I will miss him.

Meet Duncan!He is an adorable little Pit Bull/Corgi/Boston Terrier mix (kind of a “what came first the chicken or the egg” kind of breed). We originally were “just looking” for a young pup to possibly adopt, when we came across this little guy, who was called Harry at the time, at the new Providence Animal Shelter on Terminal Rd. How could we walk by this little ball of energy without at least taking him outside to play, what dog wouldn’t love that! Big mistake on our part, we instantly fell in love with him, and oddly enough, my girlfriend fell in love with his incredibly soft pink paws the most. We adopted him the very next day and he has become a permanent fixture in our life ever since, especially in our bed, where somehow he has managed to claim his spot at the foot of the bed, UNDER THE BLANKETS!

Before I can tell you about my nomination for “dog” mother of
the year I want to tell you about her “child”. Haines was found
by Animal Control four years ago roaming the streets; so ne-
glected that his harness had imbedded into his arm pits. They suspect
Haines had been dumped from a car as he hung around the same
intersection for two weeks, running up to stopped cars searching for
his owner and then running in fear when it wasn’t. Haines befriend-
ed a puggle in the area, and chewed the rope he was tethered on;
they ran loose together until a concerned neighbor confined them in
his garage. When the dog officer attempted to catch him, Haines was
terrified to the point of aggression; his life as a shelter dog had begun.
When Haines was recuperated and his behavior more stable, he was
put up for adoption. His “forever” home lasted a month before he was
returned for alpha male dominance issues. The next interested couple
spent hours visiting Haines prior to adopting him, he was back at the
shelter within thirty minutes for getting too excitable and frightening
the wife.
After two strikes it was determined that Haines would not be adopted
out again unless it was under very special circumstances, this is

where my daughter comes in. For ten years Brittany had been vol-
unteering at the animal shelter walking dogs, fostering animals, and
assisting with fundraising. Through volunteering at the shelter, and
owning rescue dogs of our own, she had become skilled in handling
dogs with issues and boy did this dog have them.
From the beginning there was a click between Brittany and Haines;
she adored him and the feeling was mutual. When others saw a
crazy, overexcited lab/pit mix, Brittany saw a “banana head” that just
needed consistency and exercise. Walking Haines was a challenge,
the first ten minutes being likened to a race horse charging out of the
gate. With time the walks got a bit better, but there was little that
could be done to counteract the days, that turned into months, that
turned into years for a young dog confined to a kennel. At an age
when most twenty year olds were thinking about what time the bars
closed, training Haines was Brittany’s first priority. Whenever time
allowed from her demanding fulltime studies as a nursing student,
and forty plus hours a week of working part time jobs, Brittany would
head to the shelter. My daughter was realistic enough to know the

Fall is officially here, and winter is just around the corner. We all know what that means – bundled up New Englanders, winter blahs, holiday weight gain,
and a general yucky feeling from lack of fresh air and sunshine. We’re not alone; dogs experience this too. In fact, they are the ones who suffer most during the winter season. As colder weather rolls in, outdoor time dramatically decreases for dogs, which means a significant drop in exercise, social interactions, and quality time with mom and dad. As a result, dog professionals see an increase in destructive behavior, barking, separation issues, and bad manners, while spring tends to bring bad leash manners, and reactivity toward strangers, other dogs or squirrels. The good news is, like with many things, a little prevention goes a long way. By engaging in a fun and rewarding activity with your pet this winter, not only will you be healthier and feel happier, but so will your dog! But what can you do if it’s so darn cold out? Never fear! South Eastern New England has plenty of canine-human interactive exercise opportuni-ties and there truly is something for everyone – and every dog. This is where the disclaimer comes in: as with any addition of or changes to exercise, both you and your dog
should receive a physical exam to ensure you are both healthy for exercise. Also, talk to your vet about vaccinations and para-site prevention, especially if they will be around other dogs.
Bikepaths aren’t just for bikes! Do you or your pet prefer a slower pace, have physical limitations, or perhaps one or both of you are a tad out of shape, or slowly getting back into exercise? There is sure to be a gorgeous bike path close by wherever you are and there’s no better way to enjoy the cool, crisp air. From short, slow strolls with multiple breaks, to multi-mile power walks, bikepath walking is an excellent exercise option for humans and dogs alike to build up endurance, cardio vascular strength, tone, and lose weight. Walks, hikes, and jogs are great for warm, sunny, winter days so bundle up in layers and soak up that sunshine.You will often see Maison and I frequenting the Blackstone River Bikeway or Cumberland Monastery, but there is also the Woonasquatucket River Greenway, Ten Mile River Greenway through Slater Park, south county bikepath by URI, Quonset bikepath, and Washington Secondary bikepath between Cranston and Coventry are also great options.

Dance the night away! Dancing isn’t just for teen pop idols and B list celebri-ties. And it doesn’t matter if you’re one of Gaga’s Little Monsters, or a Parrot Head, you could just be living with a furry Fred or Ginger. Freestyle dance is an exciting, fun, and unique opportunity for you and your dog to shake your groove thing – together! One place to try your hand – or foot (or paw?) at freestyle dance is at the Potter League for Animals in Jamestown, RI. They have been offering beginner freestyle dance for five years and class size ranges anywhere from 2 to 55 dogs! Classes can last one to six hours, and all ages, breeds, and abilities are welcome. Owner involvement is required of course, but you only dance as hard as you can – and it’s just fun for everyone! You can practice at home and the physical demands are determined by the physical capabilities of the dog and the owner. Potter League says the best three things about freestyle dance are: 1) having fun while training. 2) learning to work as a team. 3) learning to use body language.

Just as it is for humans, swimming is an amazing exercise opportunity that provides no-impact, resistance training that is ideal for older dogs, or those with injuries or limited mobility. On the other end of the spectrum there are water loving, dock diving, stick chasers who just need an opportunity to burn off some steam in the winter time. AgilityAgility enjoyed its first entertain-ment debut in England in 1978 and consists of a human handler verbally and visually guiding their off-leash dog through an obstacle course full of jumps, shoots, poles, A-frames, planks, and more, with the goal being speed. Dogs should be at least one year old to ensure they are fully developed and their bodies can handle the impact, but puppy classes on flat courses are available to introduce concepts. Delmyra Country Club for Dogs and Cats in Exeter, RI has been offering agility classes for ten years and has three instructors. Classes are available for Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced students. The classes are one hour per week, for eight weeks, with six to twelve dogs per class. Some breeds tend to be more natural at agility but any dog can join the fun if they are interested, and are at least nine months or older (younger, still growing dogs run smaller or flat courses). Of course, the dog will be off leash when running the course, so basic obedience is a must. The level of commitment from the owner varies, depending on how far you want to take the training. It can range from fun to serious com-petition. Agility is a great way to chal-lenge your dog’s physical ability and mental abilities, as well as your own! Canine Mastery – who has offered agility classes for fourteen years – says
it is important to remember this is a sport you do with your dog; the dogs don’t just run around by themselves. The physical demands on both humans and dogs also vary, depending on commitment. K9 Connection, Potter League for Animals, and several other training schools in the area also offer agility classes. But agility doesn’t have to only take place at a school! Backyard agility classes have been offered by Courteous Canine in South Kingstown and Warren since 2008. These hour long classes are geared more toward fun than competition and last for six weeks, typically scheduled seasonally. Equipment is custom built and is lower and wider than usual to minimize the risk of injury to inexperienced dogs while increasing speed. Owners can build their own equipment. Weekly class attendance is a must, but practice at home can be as often or as infrequent as you want. Activity levels can be tailored to fit almost any dog or handler’s needs. Delmyra, Canine Mastery, K9 Connection and Courteous Canine all agree: the best things about agility are the relationship building between handler and dog, and the FUN!

FlyballFlyball is another sport, but it is not as widely known as agility. Flyball began in the 70s and it looks like this: dogs line up at a start line, race against each other over a series of hurdles to a box where they press a pad which releases a tennis ball, then
they carry the ball back over the hurdles to their handler at the start line. Flyball is very addicting. The dogs love it, and it is fast, furious and LOUD. You will need to be able to handle the barking, and if you want to go on to compete it is a team sport, so you and your dog must get along with other dogs and people. Like agility, any breed can do this sport – though some thrive more than others and handler interaction is required. Canine Mastery has also been teaching flyball for 14 years, so they know a thing or two about this high velocity activity. Group classes and team practices are available and each session is customized for the dogs and up to 5 attend at a time. Classes run for four weeks and a good basic training class is helpful. Dogs should also be in good physical health and a vet approval is a must as flyball can be very strenuous.
Rally ORally, also called Rally O, or Rally Obedience is a fast paced and challenging sport for your dog in which the dog performs a variety of obedience commands, such as heel, stay, focus, recall, back up, stand and stay, recall and down, and many more, at a series of stations. It can be just for fun, or it can advance up to a very high level competition.

Potter League forAnimals has been offering their version of this sport, Doggie-O, for six years. There are two to six dogs per class and the classes range from 1 to 5 hours. There is no series of classes which you must commit to and no physical, age, or breed limitations. However, the dog must be able to perform basic commands. The level of commitment is determined by the handler’s goals – they can practice as much or as little as they want. According to the Potter League, the best 3 things about Rally are: 1) working in a different setting, 2) practicing a variety of commands and tricks, and 3) working in close contact with other dogs and people.For more information on Rally, please visit the Association of Pet Dog Trainers Rally site or keep an eye out for a free, public informational Rally Webinar by APDT in January, which is Train Your Pet Month. TreibballTreibball is yet another awesome option for you and your dog to enjoy together. This new competitive sport origi-nated in Germany and promotes teamwork and communi-cation between handler and dog. Think of a giant game of billiards where dogs push giant rubber balls around and into
goals! Canine Mastery offers workshops on Treibball if you’d like to learn more, as well as scent workshops, com-petition obedience, and puppy play which are all excellent options for you and your pooch to get pooped. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers will be offering a we-binar on Treiball in 2012, so be sure to keep an eye out if you want to learn more.

• Place the carrier in a comfortable spot, where your kitty will want to explore without the risk of being ‘jumped’ by other pets, and will be relaxed enough to nap. Try placing anti-slip pads underneath.
• Remove the doors and top or secure the carrier to stay open so there is no risk of accidentally becoming or feeling trapped. Place a towel or blanket in your cat’s favorite napping spot for a few days, then put it in the carrier to make it smell more familiar.
• Place a dish with canned food, a bit of tuna or sardines (low sodium!) about a foot outside the carrier. Repeat this, and over the course of several days move the dish closer to the carrier, then to the entryway,

• Right before the trip is not the time to begin. Allow plenty of time to practice far in advance. If you grab a carrier and your cat is already long gone, then this step is especially critical.
• Ensure the carrier is appropriate and clean – no one likes being dirty or cramped on a trip! Kitty should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. The bottom should be stable with no sharp edges inside or out. Avoid cleaning with any scented or harsh chemicals that can be toxic. Use hot water only and if it’s really gunky, let it soak. If you must use a cleanser, use unscented, non-toxic soap and rinse thoroughly. If you have a brand new carrier, rinse or soak to remove that “new” smell.

then just inside, and gradually all the way to the back. • Continue until kitty runs into the carrier in anticipation of snacks. Very slowly and gently close the door, but don’t latch, try to force it or sneak it. Sit with her, talk to her and allow her to exit on her own. Once she is comfortable, try latching the door while she is snacking. When she is finished, unlatch and let her out.
• Next, slide the carrier very gently a few inches while she is inside snacking. Repeat until she is comfortable with the motion and noise.
• Gradually, pick the carrier up a few inches and place it back down. Slowly over time, pick the carrier up higher, eventu-ally walk a few steps, and eventually take her to another room and bring her back. Always release the door with the carrier in the same spot. How quickly you advance is individual. If kitty ever shows fear, panic, or stress you are pushing her too fast. Starting kittens out young is a great idea and leaving the carrier out so it smells familiar and is a part of the home is always a plus. With a bit of training and patience, cats can enjoy traveling as much as you. So pull dust off that carrier and get training!

responsibilities of dog ownership, and felt that although she would
love to adopt Haines her living situation and school made it prohibi-
tive at the time.
As soon as Brittany got out of school in May, she started visiting
Haines almost daily. With the approval of her landlord, they began
once a week sleepovers. Haines was enrolled in obedience classes
at Brittany’s expense. His first week of class was disastrous as he
proceeded to do alligator rolls, to the point where he escaped from
his collar, and frantically played with his leash throughout class. Britt
called me in tears stating that she couldn’t deal with the regression
anymore; with one step forward and two steps back every time he
returned to the shelter. Permission was granted from her landlord for
Haines to become a foster dog and live with her on a fulltime basis.
By the second week it was clear Haines was relishing the attention
and stability as he became the star of obedience class.
Days were planned around ensuring Haines got plenty of stimulation
and exercise; trips to dog parks, dog friendly beaches, visits to see our
dogs were all key to guaranteeing his compatibility with other dogs
and people. Haines accompanied my daughter when she worked for
a landscaper once or twice a week, and patiently sat in the shade.
Some days he would go with Brittany’s boyfriend to visit her at a golf
course, yet another job, where he would be admired by patrons.
Brittany gave herself the one thing she most wanted for her twenty
first birthday, she formally adopted Haines. There will be challenging
days ahead, he still loves to chew, his anxiety of being away from
“mom” is sometimes apparent, and he has some alpha dog mounting
issues that cause problems at doggie daycare. I am pretty sure Haines
knows how lucky he is; it took four years and three placements to
find him a forever friend and a forever home.

{Wandering Tails} by Mike Fink
Decades ago, I attended a student’s wedding at the fancy Unitarian Church on Benefit Street. The bride carried
not flowers, but her beloved pet mouse! Once upon a time, when I studied biology at Yale, I brought home the white mouse we were supposed to use in an experiment. Home to the dorm, and later home at Thanksgiving to my boyhood nest in Providence. Yes, I have known mice, mostly the albino type, as guests of human households.I have also, like most, if not all of us, known them not as guests but as pests. I stored my letters, papers, sentimental photographs, in a garage I converted into a memorial cottage or studio, with a wood stove, shelves for books and souvenirs, and trunks for all the reminders of auld lang syne. Well, of course, in time the mice got to all that clutter. They munched
the edges of pages or cartons. They built nests in desk drawers. They left unpleasant signs of their sojourns. I really had no choice but to resort to the traps and unkind gadgets you can get in hardware stores.Ah, except for one splendid episode, perhaps worth this report. There was a little clear plastic box designed to capture mice without harming them or even alarming them. These little oblongs were called “mice cubes.” Mickey would enter by a swinging doorway to get the dab of peanut butter or the sliver of cheese. The entrance only opened up for entry, not exit. No snap, no glue, no panic. Just a fine grey or beige mousie in a glass housie. All you had to do, all I did, was take the wee prisoner out of there, carry it to a stone wall, turn the rectangle upside down, and out would step the liberated soul and form, fine and dandy. Sadly, I lost the blessed box and never could find anything similar. I had made a pet from a pest, and our friendship lasted but an hour. I have many acquainceships, forged in cafes, that don’t endure much longer than that!I had a graduating student from RISD last year, who invited me to his studio for a final perusal. I offered to purchase whatever portrait was left after his packing up was done and over with. There, upon the wall, in the good light, was a painting of...a mouse! A sort of mythic, artistic, fabled mouse, the spiritual descendant of Mickey, and Aesop’s little creature that rescues a lion and an elephant from their troubles. The pet mouse we all hope will forgive us in the name of all the other mice we have destroyed in an endless battle against the destructive forces of nature that interfere with human domination...or seek to share its advantages at our expense.Plenty of mice have entered folklore, literature, the cartoon funnypapers, the realms of fantasy. I offer but a few examples of the borderline between the zone of what we call vermin or critters and the zone of protected species and beloved animal companions. More and more, we will be called upon to deal with the encroachment of beasts we once romanticized that now graze upon our suburban lawns. They have no space left to them! Remember at least that “Of Mice and Men” shows how the poet in us recognizes that all life shares the same fate!

May is a beautiful adult calico cat that was found dumped outside of the shelter trying to survive with the feral cats. She is definitely a house cat and needs to be shown some love! Big Red is a big orange and white short-haired cat. He is about 3-5 years old. He was abandoned outside when his owners moved. Big Red watched as they loaded up the mov-ing truck and drove away. He sat outside for weeks waiting for them to come back. He was brought into the shelter soon after.

Thunder is a super cute 10 month old Pit Bull Mix who was surrendered because he was too much for his family. He is an energetic pup who will require a lot of exercise! He is very athletic and loves to play with his toys, especially tennis balls! He would do well in a home with children ages 10 and older, he has not been exposed to cats.
Ralphie is a very handsome Old English Bull-dog. He is 3 years old and neutered. He is a very relaxed and a laid back kind of guy. He can be nervous in new situations at first, but loves being the center of attention. He lived with other dogs but has never been exposed to cats. His ideal household would be a quiet one where he can relax and be loved.
Phantom is an 8 year old declawed cat who was surrendered due to his owners allergies. Phantom would do well with children of any age and has lived with dogs and cats in his previous home. Phantom has been shy here so far but very gentle. Once he settles in, he’s a very loving cat who likes to sit on laps.
Diamond is a 4 year old cat who was brought in because she started making litter box mis-takes after her family got a new dog. Cats react to stress in all sorts of different ways, and unfortunately, sometimes they send out a cry for help by not using their litter box. Di-amond has not made any litter box mistakes since coming here.

She was not producing enough puppies in her litters so after several years of constant breeding and nursing she was dumped at an animal shelter by her breeder. Mandy is up to date on all vaccines.
Coco is a beautiful chocolate and tan long hair dachshund girl. She is a mellow young lady who would love to be treated like a prin-cess. She does not like loud voices, so correc-tions have to be made in a soft voice. She is a great watchdog, & loves to look out the win-dow! Coco is unsure of new surroundings or people at first, but warms up quickly.
Madison is a sweet little dachshund mix girl who was surrendered by her owner. She is still a puppy and has a blast with tossing her rawhide chew up in the air and trying to catch it. She loves to get lots of loving and wants to sleep in the big bed with you. Madison is working on her house training.
Maya was rescued from a Craigslist ad with her companion. She is very happy and gets along well with all people and animals. She loves to go on walks and is very polite while on the leash. Maya loves to cuddle and she is very affectionate. Maya’s previous own-ers over fed her so she is currently at an un-healthy weight.

Mindy is a delightful, silly, affectionate, play-ful puppy-dog. She came from a hoarding situation in GA, and is still a little shy and barky with strangers. But she is improving daily. She is more afraid of children and men than of women, and would really like a calm home, perhaps with a middle-aged woman.
Tamsin is a one in a million cat - honestly! You see, in cats the color orange is sex linked to male, and there are NO orange females. Well, almost none. In all my 40+ years of animal rescue this is only the second solid orange tiger female I have ever seen. She is about 2 years old, very friendly, healthy.
Titus is a LOT of dog in a SMALL package ! Titus is very tiny - about 6 lbs - but thinks he is a big tough guy! He loves to snuggle under blankets, and be held in your arms. He is very funny when he plays, leaping around like a little gazelle. He’s a bit shy with strangers, and with new dogs, especially big ones.

Milo is a large, declawed 10 year old male cat who came to the shelter because he could not accompany his owners when they moved. He really does not like being at the shelter and is hoping someone will adopt him very soon. He used to live with a cat, but likes to keep to himself at the shelter.

We have started her on a lower calo-rie food to help her lose some extra pounds. What she really needs is a nice home to run around and play in. She loves chasing around the laser light.
Oreo is about 2 years old and simply a stun-ning and masculine boy! Oreo would be happy with a day filled with ear rubs and a job! He is tons of fun, and is working on his leash manners. Oreo is smart and willing to work and with dedication and commitment he will blossom into an outstanding com-panion.
Buddy is a 3 1/2 year old lab chow mix. The Chow in him brings affection and devotion to family, while being reserved and discern-ing with strangers. Buddy is being fostered. At his foster home he has the free run of the house. He does not chew on the furniture or jump on sofas and only does his business out-doors. Buddy will be your best jogging pal.

Homeless Animals, a 501(c)(3) non-profit is made up of all volunteers, located
mostly in the Northeast. All our dogs are housed in foster homes which are 100%
volunteer. We are one of the largest ‘all volunteer’ rescues. We check references
and conduct a home visit. If you rent we must have your landlord’s name and
phone number to verify you are allowed to have a dog. Most dogs are evaluated,
and vetted prior to entering into foster care. You supply the food and a safe and
loving environment. Some dogs need help with house training, socialization and

friend to pass by. I was among other supporters waiting to offer encouragement from the idle comfort of sidewalk and soft grass. I had brought my three-year- old dog with me for company. We were playing fetch with a maple stick... short throws with quick returns. Bleu was a Springer Spaniel, but not the gracefull gliding-leaping-arching flavor the name suggests. But a brawner version, barrel chested with bear paws and big features. He ran like a fat man in slippers and looked like a dog wearing a dog cos-tume. And on occasion would leave a scale model of his lower intestine for you to clean up.
As we played together, I noticed a man in his mid- forties turning around and watching us. He smiled and turned back to the street only to glance back again and grin. Finally, this gentlemen approched Bleu, tussled his hair behind his ears at first, and then took a knee, meeting him smile to smile. “I had a Springer myself,” he said. I had never had a full breed dog before Bleu. I traded a watercolor painting I had done for the breeders, and knew I had gotten the better end of the deal the day I drove Bleu home on my lap. I’ve had dogs all my life, but never a dog that might look so similar to another dog before. “He would have been 14 in July. It’s nly been a few weeks,” the man told me. I sat, a little surprised by his openness, and told him I was sorry to hear that. He got back up and returned to the walk. I resumed my game with Bleu, this time a bit more subdued, weak tosses with quiet commands.
The man returned again, this time playfully tugging the stick that Bleu refused to give up, a game he loved. “I’ve got tell you,” he said, “I can’t believe how much your dog looks like mine did, his face, the way he runs.” He was staring into Bleu’s eyes and seemed to be looking for something, maybe recognition, I thought later. I could see this man was amazed and stunned and getting emotional. We talked for a while. He was volunteering at a shelter, walking dogs a few times a week, just to be around animals. I let him play with Bleu as long as he wanted, until finally, slowly he got up off the grass, told me how lucky I was, and walked away.
I would tell this story later to people as a cautionary tale of what losing a dog and life-long companion could do to you. Knowing all the while someday I could be the one playing the middle-aged role myself. What I could not have understood, but what the man in the park seemed to, was that even though we like to think of our pets as unique creatures and perfect companions only to us, the snowflake idea...this man was perhaps taking comfort in the notion that another dog, so very similar to his own was out there somewhere, if not his companion, someone’s. And that the clarity of his grief had allowed him to recognize these familiar qualities.
Now after almost fifteen years together, like the man at the park, I am without my companion. Bleu was all of my favorite things everyday. Soulful, playful, hilarious, boisterous, and lazy, with fur, the scent of pond water, or even a compost bin at times. But, I am encouraged to think that if I return a greeting to most dogs, I will laugh at the things that make them unique, and I also see the familiar traces of my lost friend.
