Human Kinetics WebinarFitness & Wellness A Way of Life
What’s this webinar about?
´ How do we make a difference in college students lives?´ Do we NEED to pre/post test physical outcomes to
improve our health?´ What did our research & the research on other
health/wellness books teach us?´ What IS Functional movement for LIFE?´ What role does WELLNESS play in a life well lived?
The disconnect?
levels of physical activity in the
U.S. have decreased
the focus on HIIT/extreme conditioning
programs has increased
What’s the Human Movement Paradigm?
Does more movement/exercise and intensity matter?
´ “Given the many benefits of exercise — it may seem logical that the more you do, the better. But a large new study suggests that’s not always the case, at least when it comes to mental health.
´ Just two hours of any form of exercise each week may make a significant impact.
´ On average, people reported 3.36 days of poor mental health per month. But those who said they exercised — through activities ranging from housework to running — experienced about 1.5 fewer gloomy days per month than sedentary peers.
Lancet Psychiatry (8-18)
Physical Activity can help you think more creatively
Oppezzo et al. (2014). Give Ideas Some Legs: The Positive Effect of Walking on Creative Thinking. J Exp Psych, Learning, Memory & Cognition. 40:4, 1142-1152.
Intentional Exercise vs. Lifestyle Movement
Making a difference Coach vs. Prescribe!
´Research on other F/W college books…..´Had a prescribe vs. coaching approach´Telling people what to do does not work long term´They need to find/discover it for themselves!
Do we need to pre/post test physical outcomes; especially in front of each other?

Is the Fitness Industry Functional?
• 79.4% of U.S. adults are NOT physically active
• 20.6% of adults meet the CDC guidelines for PA for both
aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity (CDC, 2011)
• By 2030, half of all U.S. adults will be obese & 19% of
the population will be over age 65
• Only ~ 0.00005% of the population are professional
athletes, yet the fitness industry appears to be focused
on athletic performance vs. human performance for life
Reduced daily energy expenditure over the past 50 years

Catering to the Fit?
´ Health/fitness club memberships holding steady at 14-20% of the U.S. population
´ What about the other 80-85%?´ Is the fitness professional missing the mark?´ Is the intensity too high?
We took away the use of cell phones while in class moving
´ Added a social component to our class – walk a lap; do some strength movements; meet someone you don’t know; walk another lap.
´ Students want to meet other students and we are encouraging them to meet “like” people in our personal fitness classes.
´ Why? Because the most influential person in one’s life is their significant other.
Choice and History are a theme!
