SPEAKERS AND CONTRIBUTORS

NEALE BRITTAIN HEAD OF FLEET CRITICAL PROGRAMMES, EDF ENERGY Neale Brittain served as Head of Safety and Regulation of British Energy Generation, a main operating subsidiary of EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Group, from October 2006. He has been with EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Group since 1978. Neale started his career at the Generation Development and Construction Division at Barnwood majoring on AGR Fuel Routes. He transferred to Hartlepool power station becoming Engineering Manager in 1994. He returned to Barnwood in 1997, leading a number of plant recovery projects and central functions – including Director of Engineering and Director of the Performance Improvement Programme. He served as Director of British Energy Generation. Neale is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Chartered Engineer and has an MBA.

TONY RICE SAFETY ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT MANAGER, ROLLS-ROYCE Tony Rice has 17 years of experience working for Rolls-Royce within the Submarines Enterprise. He has produced safety cases covering the full nuclear life cycle, including: pressurised water reactor (PWR) design, core manufacture, core load, commissioning, life operation, refuel and post-commission. For the last eight years, Tony has led the Successor nuclear safety case from inception through to final design. He is currently responsible for the technical delivery of safety cases to the MoD to support the Submarine programme, both current class and new designs.

ROGER ECOBMANAGER, REGION 1 SAFETY CASE BRANCH, DESIGN AUTHORITY, EDF ENERGY Roger Ecob is Manager of one of the Safety Case Branches in the Design Authority of EDF Energy. He has more than 30 years’ experience in the nuclear industry. He started as a Research Officer at Berkeley Nuclear Laboratories before moving into safety case work at Barnwood in 1990, originally in the field of AGR fuel design, fuel performance and fault studies. After a spell as a manager in the internal regulator (then Safety and Regulation Division, now renamed Independent Nuclear Assurance), he took on his current role in 2005. He has been a member of EDF Energy’s Nuclear Safety Committee since 2003.

SIMON BENNETT SENIOR SAFETY ASSESSOR – SAFETY MANAGEMENT, NATIONAL NUCLEAR LABORATORY Simon Bennett is a Senior Safety Assessor with NNL, based at Central Laboratory on the Sellafield sites. He provides a technical lead role for safety case advice for the NNL Central and Windscale Laboratories. His role involves understanding client expectations, establishing the potential impact on the safety case and identifying the way forward. Previously, Simon has been a Safety Assessor for Sellafield, supporting the production, upkeep and review of safety cases for a wide range of operational plants on the Sellafield site.

DAVID SENIOR KEYNOTE SPEAKER DEPUTY CHIEF INSPECTOR, OFFICE FOR NUCLEAR REGULATION David Senior is a Deputy Chief Inspector with extensive regulatory experience across the UK nuclear sector, including Programme Director for ONR’s Defence and Decommissioning, Fuel and Waste Programmes. David is also a Chartered Mechanical Engineer.

TIMOTHY CHITTENDEN CHAIR PRESIDENT, NUCLEAR INSTITUTE Timothy Chittenden joined the Royal Navy in 1971 while reading Engineering Science at Cambridge. He specialised in Marine and Nuclear Engineering and joined the nuclear submarine service, where he served as a Marine Engineering Officer afloat and ashore. After 34 years, during which he gained promotion to Rear Admiral, he retired from the Royal Navy to take up appointments initially as Programme Director and then as Safety and Assurance Director at BAE Systems’ nuclear shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness. He retired for a second time in 2011 but retained Associate status with the company. Timothy was appointed a Non-Executive Director of Sellafield in 2008 and Vice President of the NI in 2012, succeeding to the Presidency in October 2013.
