FISITA – Annual Review of 2015

Welcome to the FISITA Annual Review of 2015

During 2015 we learned much about the value and importance of the ‘FISITA family’ around the world. It has been a pleasure to be able to visit many members in Europe, Asia and the United States and also meet and speak with many more in person, online and over the telephone.

We are privileged to have such an excellent network of pro-active members around the world, committed to supporting the staff team achieve its goals. It is clear FISITA’s success and continued development is based around the importance of this community and the relationships it sustains.

2015 was an excellent year for FISITA, with collaborative work between members and staff colleagues driving positive progress against the business plan while transitional activities saw a focus on a necessary restructure of the staff team, review of business and operational process and new innovation being brought to the agenda, adding value and member benefi t in all areas.

EuroBrake and the World Automotive Summit delivered their best attendance, content, organisation and business based results to date – all our committees made signifi cant progress with the introduction of a number of new initiatives throughout the course of the year, culminating with a really engaged and progressive Council meeting in Cologne in September.

A proposal supported by our Finance Committee and Executive Board colleagues led to the purchase of a new build, 2,500 sq ft offi ce, in close proximity to London Stansted Airport and FISITA relocated to its new UK head quarters in November with a new team evolving from the process, bringing expertise and experience into the organisation and continuing the modernisation process.

2016 will see many of the discussions, debates and reviews from 2015 come to fruition via plans agreed through the ‘Road Map to 2020’ initiative. Presented to the Executive Board in July and September, these plans bring six new operational objectives to the agenda, which will create a focus for our development activities in support of the original business objectives which remain unchanged.

We are proud to lead our organisation and feel honoured to be welcomed into the community so positively and would like to take the opportunity to thank all our members, from Societies and Honorary Committee, for your ongoing support and we very much look forward to working with you throughout 2016.

2015 FISITA World Automotive Summit

Guests were invited to an exclusive setting and venue overlooking the Tower of London, in the United Kingdom, for FISITA’s World Automotive Summit in November.

The Summit brings together over 100 leading technical executives, scientists, academics, public policy makers and NGOs to discuss a critical issue to the automotive mobility industry and wider society. For 2015, the Programme Committee created an excellent agenda based around the theme 'Personal Mobility and the Impact on our Auto Industry', which attracted high quality delegates and speakers from around the world.

FISITA – Annual Review of 2015

"FISITA’s Summits provide intellectually stimulating environments where policymakers and industry leaders can have open and honest dialogue about the needs and challenges of the automotive industry."

Dr. Kazuo Okamoto, Toyota Motor Corporation

The keynote speakers and workshops generated lively discussion and debate from delegates, bringing signifi cant insight and expertise to each of the specialist areas. Following the Workshops, the event was brought together with reports back from each area and a wrap up session where the collated feedback from all was presented and summarised.

Now in its sixth year, the Summit has become recognised as FISITA's international, technical leadership event.

EuroBrake 2015

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank FISITA for organising such an event... As students we require platforms like these to showcase our ideas and most importantly discussing it with the experts. Truly this was one of those. I thoroughly enjoyed my two days here and also I am very delighted to be a winner."

Shino George, Politechnico di Torino (Italy),‘Most Innovative Idea’, Daimler Student Innovation Competition, 2015

In May, the success of the world's largest braking conference continued in Dresden, Germany, as over 950 attendees gathered for the EuroBrake 2015 exhibition and technical programme.

This annual event, organised by FISITA, has become a must-attend date in the braking community's calendar. EuroBrake brings together leading brake engineers, scientists, academics and industry experts for three days of technical presentations, panels and networking events.

This world class technical programme featured over 120 papers in 27 sessions focussing on topics such as the Fundamentals of Friction, Advanced and Combined Braking Systems, Modelling, Materials and Design, Environment, and Global Standardisation. The EuroBrake exhibition was the event's largest to date, featuring 86 companies from 19 countries.

This year also saw the successful introduction of the Daimler Student Innovation Competition, a global initiative that inspired students to design their vision of what braking technology will look like in ten years' time. Also new this year was the EuroBrake app that provided delegates with the ability to connect with EuroBrake in new and exciting ways, such as bringing a "social" element to technical sessions and providing key networking opportunities.

Engineering the Future

FISITA’s range of education initiatives encourage students and young engineers to showcase their ideas, learn from their peers and industry experts and build confi dence in their automotive engineering abilities - inspiring the engineers of the future to develop skills, knowledge and a passion for mobility solutions.

YourFutureInAutomotive.com, FISITA’s education and young person website, continued to grow in terms of information and visitors through 2015 and is considered an indispensible resource for students and young people ranging from 11-12 year olds at school, through to graduates and young engineers focused on pursuing their passion for automotive engineering.

Site visits to the website have almost doubled in the last year, applications and awards for the FISITA Travel Bursary continue to rise and the success of the inaugural Daimler Student Innovation Competition at EuroBrake serve to demonstrate that FISITA’s reach is extending further around the world, guiding more students and young people towards choosing automotive mobility engineering as their destination career.

The FISITA Travel Bursary continues to grow in popularity:

FISITA Travel Bursary has awarded over EUR 205,000 to morethan 175 students from 35 countries who have carried out placements at 135 companies around the world

In 2015 we received 61 applications, the highest number ever

In 2015 we awarded one bursary each to 40 students, the highestnumber ever.

FISITA launched the Daimler Student Innovation Competition which took place at EuroBrake 2015. The Competition challenged inspiring young engineers to design a vision of what braking systems would look like in the future and 20 students with the best applications were selected to showcase their work at EuroBrake. This was a fantastic opportunity for students and delegates to network, share ideas and learn from one another.

Our International University Guide has expanded to include over 520 engineering courses at 150 universities around the world and will continue to increase as more courses are developed and added. Our Student Journal now hosts over 190 full technical papers featuring the work of FISITA Student Congress attendees.

Under the banner ‘Inspire to Aspire’ FISITA continues to develop its education enterprise and we are making strides towards putting this in motion throughout 2016.

Preparations for the education activities at FISITA 2016 got underway with the launch of the Islands of Excellence competition and abstracts were submitted for the Educators Technical Session.

As one of the world’s leading advocates for careers in automotive engineering, FISITA sustains the drive to encourage the best and brightest minds to join our developing industry through our education resources and established links with leading automotive companies.

"I would like to whole-heartedly thank FISITA Travel Bursary for awarding me their generous scholarship. Living alone in a foreign country is a scary and diffi cult thing to do, and with the help of FISITA I was able to comfortably enjoy my time living in Barcelona and interning at SEAT."

Raul Chacon Placement at SEAT, Spain

"This internship has been a great experience. I have acquired a solid technical background in the Noise and Vibration domain, and perfected my language skills... I also really appreciated working with a diff erent work culture, and to experience another way of life. It opened my eyes on a land full of work opportunities."
