The core of the High Desert Museum’s mission has long been to share dynamic, educational exhibitions and programs, as well as to create a welcoming atmosphere for all. Thanks to your support, the Museum experienced a banner year of making this mission a reality. Over the past five years, our attendance has increased by 26 percent — record-breaking growth for the Museum! Last year, nearly 200,000 visitors were able to observe the agility of otters, discover a porcupine sleeping in a tree, pump water on a 1904 ranch, and reflect on a landscape painting by James Lavadour. In part, this growth is augmented by our expanding initiatives to extend access to the Museum to those who might not otherwise be able to visit. Last year, through these initiatives, 18,498 individuals entered for free or at a reduced rate. For example, we expanded our National Endowment for the Arts Blue Star Museum program, which provides free admission to active duty military and their families, from the summer to year-round. Other initiatives have continued to make the Museum accessible to community members. During the federal furlough last spring, we offered federal employees and their families free admission. Our quarterly Museum & Me events enable individuals who experience disabilities and their families to visit after hours at no cost, and Little Wonders provides free memberships to Head Start families. Our growing number of visitors are experiencing new, innovative programming. With the support of a prestigious Oregon Community Foundation Creative Heights grant, the Museum’s recent exhibition, Desert Reflections: Water Shapes the West, brought together artists, scientists, culture keepers, poets and scholars to evoke new understandings of how water shapes the cultural and natural landscape of the American West. For its innovative and collaborative approach, the exhibition won the 2019 Charles Redd Center for Western Studies Award for Exhibition Excellence. You are a vital part of making this growth possible. Thanks to you, as visitors, members, donors and volunteers, moments of wonder happen every day at the Museum. Board Chair Ryan J.
