November 1, 2016 Volume 1, Issue 11 First United Methodist Church The Chimes I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am con- fident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:3-7, NRSV). As we approach November we naturally begin to reflect on Thanksgiving and the things for which we are thankful. I have many things for which I am thankful. But near the top of that list is this church, and the Kenton First Family. So many people have come around my family and me, made us feel welcome, served others, and engaged in the ministry of this church. For that, I am extremely thankful. We have spent the last month challenging ourselves, especially around stewardship and finances. But we transition to spending this month celebrating and giving thanks. We celebrate All Saints Day, and all the saints who have gone before us, to build up this church into what it is. We celebrate Veterans Day, and all who have sacrificed for the Kingdom of God. We celebrate Christ the King Sunday, and Thanksgiving, and give thanks for Gods final victory which is already sure. These two themes merge beautifully. Paul tells us in Philippians 4 that living a life of generosity creates thanksgiving to God. This church has been generous in giving, in serving, and in pray- er. First United Methodist Church

    The Chimes

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying

with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of

your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am con-

fident of this, that the one who began a good work among you

will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus

    Christ” (Philippians 1:3-7, NRSV).

As we approach November we naturally begin to reflect on

Thanksgiving and the things for which we are thankful. I have

many things for which I am thankful. But near the top of that list

is this church, and the Kenton First Family. So many people

have come around my family and me, made us feel welcome,

served others, and engaged in the ministry of this church. For

    that, I am extremely thankful.

We have spent the last month challenging ourselves, especially

around stewardship and finances. But we transition to spending

this month celebrating and giving thanks. We celebrate All

Saints Day, and all the saints who have gone before us, to build

up this church into what it is. We celebrate Veterans Day, and all

who have sacrificed for the Kingdom of God. We celebrate

Christ the King Sunday, and Thanksgiving, and give thanks for

God’s final victory which is already sure.

These two themes merge beautifully. Paul tells us in Philippians

4 that living a life of generosity creates thanksgiving to God.

This church has been generous in giving, in serving, and in pray-

er. Now, we give thanks for all God has done for us, in us, and

    through us.

Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for your service.

Thank you for embracing the challenge of the last month. Now,

    let’s celebrate God’s great works!

  • “Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.” -Philippians 2:2

Thank you for your support and all who donated their time, resources, and money to the bake sale that Breanna and I held on Sunday October 16th. Without the support from our congre-gation we would not be able to serve in the ways that we can. So we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

We will be leaving at 4:45am Friday November 11th to begin our journey to the Savannette region of Haiti. We will be gone approximately 10 days. A ma-jority of what we will be doing will be relief type work since the whole nation is struggling to bounce back from the recent hurricane. Here is a quote from a well-respected man in the communi-ty and the agronomist in regards to the Savannette:

"The hurricane swept away eve-rything we had. No trees man-goes, no coconuts, no bananas, and no fruits absolutely left stand. We were not in misery be-fore this, but now we going to know what does misery mean. We are out of lives. We do not know how we are going to live in the coming days. It seems like, we Haitian people we were born to suffer it might be our destiny."

Here is another quote from a Savan-nette community member,

"All over the SUD got flooded. Cayes is flooding and all the river is coming up. There is no way to get at anyplace. We can't get more rain. We will be done or finished."

It is our hope that our team of Ameri-cans can go and help rebuild what was destroyed during this devastating hur-ricane. But beyond that, these people’s faith has been tested to the limit, so we hope that when they see us they will see hope. They will see that with God all things are possible, and that in the midst of all their suffering and despair that God is still with them. Our leader Jan shared this verse with us that she says is very well descriptive of the Hai-tian people.

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed: perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; stuck down, but not destroyed."

    MISSION MOMENT

Psalm 105:1 “Oh, give thanks to the

LORD, call upon HIS name, make

known HIS deeds among the peo-

ples!”. I thank the Lord that he pro-

vided wonderful weather for our pre-

school this month as we took a field

trop to the pumpkin patch/apple or-

chard at the Althauser’s Farm. The

students enjoyed every aspect of the

trip from the bus ride to watching the

    apples being picked to discovering

more than just pumpkins in the

    pumpkin patch.

The preschool was able to take a trip

to the library to visit an Australian

author who read his books to us and

gave an autographed book to each

student. Just a little humor to end

on: One day last week while playing

with the three-year-old class, one of

my little girls asked me to play along

with her in the kitchen. I asked her

what she would like me to cook for

her. Her response was, “Oh, no, I

don’t want you to cook; you are the

servant who cleans up after me!”

  • YOUTH NEWS

This past month our youth group visited Blanchard Place in Kenton to give the residents who live there prayer shawls. The Heal-ing Stitchers knit the prayer shawls. The students were shy at first; some students had never vis-ited a nursing home. Some felt they didn’t know the right thing to say to the residents. They quickly warmed up to the environment and by the end of our time the stu-dents didn’t want to leave. Right when we left they started asking me when we could go back. Stu-dents even began brainstorming other things we could do with the residents next time we go back. We will be Christmas caroling there and other nursing homes in Ken-ton on December 18th.

    Upcoming events….

November 6th at 12pm- Video Scavenger Hunt

December 4th at 12pm- OneFund auction in the basement

December 18th -Christmas car-oling in the community

December 24th- Christmas play at 4:30 service

*****Practices will be the first three Sundays in Decem-ber during Sunday school for all youth who want to be a part of this year’s Christmas play.

-If anyone would like to volunteer for Sunday evening’s high school youth group, or Wednesday evening’s middle school youth group please let me know. We could always use volunteers for those evenings.

-We are still searching for a used pool table and foosball table for our new game room. Our goal is to have at least one game table in the blue room before winter.

Please continue to pray for the youth of our church and of our community.

November 6-Hebrews 11:8-16-Standing on the Shoulders of Giants-In honor of both Reformation Day and All Saints Day, we recognize and celebrate all those that have gone before, and faithfully made our church what it is today. November 13-John 15:12-17-Making the Sacrifice-In honor of Veterans Day, we talk about living a life of love and sacrifice. Not just in death, but also in life. November 20-Colossians 1:11-23-Christ is My King-As we wind down from elections and celebrate Christ the King Sunday, we remember that Christ is the King of all, and the one we serve.

  • “ This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus. -Revelation 14:12

All Saints Day is Tuesday, November 1st. We will celebrate it on Sunday, November 6th. All Saints Day traces its ori-gins back to perhaps as early as the 4th century. The Feast of All Saints, as an official church holiday on November 1st, can be traced back to Pope Gregory III in the 8th century. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the holiday celebrates saints, confessors, and martyrs.

John Wesley put his own Methodist spin on the holiday. In our Methodist tradition, we celebrate all the faithful as saints. This includes not only famous Christians, but Chris-tians who were faithful without recognition. That is why on November 6th we celebrate all the faithful who passed away in the last year.
