The Season of Lent

Too often we celebrate Liturgical seasons without explanation or understanding. I wanted to take this space to give us some basic understanding about this time in an effort to encourage us to take this season seriously in our spiritual life.

The theme of Lent is taken from the time Jesus retreated into the Wilderness. It is a time of prepara-tion, soul searching and a designated time with our Creator.

Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. This year it began on Ash Wednesday, February 17. We skip Sundays when we count the forty days, because Sun-days commemorate the Resurrection.

You may notice a change in the colors used in wor-ship in the church during this time. In most churches, the decorations are purple, the royal color, to prepare for the King.

Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent origi-nated in the very earliest days of the Church as a pre-paratory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicat-ed themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus’ withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. All churches that have a continuous history beginning before AD 1500 observe Lent. The ancient church that wrote, collected, canonized, and propagated the New Testament also observed Lent, believing it to be a commandment from the apostles.

In many countries, the last day before Lent (called Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Carnival, or Fasching) has become a last fling before the solemnity of Lent. For centuries, it was customary to fast by abstaining from meat during Lent, which is why some people call the festival Carnival, which is Latin for farewell to meat.

I encourage each follower of Christ to take each day of Lent seriously. Set aside a specific time each day to reflect, pray, read His Word, and seek God’s will for your life. Many “give up” something for Lent. This is a sign of sacrifice, intended to show our seri-ousness about this time. Others choose to “fast” a meal or something significant. In today’s society, some “fast” the internet or social media and spend that time in prayer…not a bad idea! Regardless, take time each day to seek God’s plan for your life.

A couple of great scriptures can be used at this time. Each day read Psalm 51 or Psalm 139:32,24. God’s blessings and presence be with you during this Lenten Season.

What a busy month of February! We had all sorts

of great things happening throughout the month of

February. The youth had a Super Bowl Party on Feb-

ruary 1 with over 30 students showing up through-

out the night to root for their pick to win it all. We

have our Rummage Sale fundraiser on Saturday,

February 28, with the proceeds going to the Youth

Ministry.

The youth also sponsored and put on the Chili

and Soup Cook-Off fundraiser to help raise money

for the FUMC Scholarship Fund. We raised almost

$700 and had a blast doing it! Thanks to all who

helped, to all the chefs and to all those that came to

eat some great soup and chili. Without them this

event wouldn’t be possible. This is the fourth year in

a row that we had a REAL judge to help bring some

authenticity to the coveted award of the Golden La-

dle and Golden Spoon. Our Judges were Hector and

Laura who have had previous experience judging in

food competitions. The judge’s choice for best Chili

was Donna Then, and the judge’s choice for best

soup was Mae Bitner.

Our annual Middle School camping trip is coming

up during spring break. The dates of the trip are

March 23-26; it is a lot of fun. This trip rotates be-

tween 3 different locations: Stone Mountain, Geor-

gia, Key West, Florida, and this year we will be going

to Fort Wilderness at Disney. It will be our second

time to be at Fort Wilderness; it could hardly be con-

sidered camping because it is so nice, but we will be

in tents. We will be going to one of the theme parks

and one of the water parks as well as enjoying the

amenities around Fort Wilderness. To sign up for the

trip call the office or go on our website to print the

permission slip.

Warren Willis Camp June 22-27

Youth and children who plan to attend camp this summer at Warren Willis Camp must have their registration form and $100 depos-it in Miss Barbara’s office by March 1, 2015.

GI PROGRAM Our next packing event will take place on April 23, at 9:00 am. If you would like to help, contact

Ron Padgett (386-717-0490) or email at [email protected]. We plan to box items up and mail items quarterly. Don’t forget to drop off those travel-size toiletry items in the SOS boxes on Sundays. A complete list is located on the outside of the box.
