May 19 th is Pentecost and we will have completed the Advent through Pentecost cycle of the church year. This cycle tells us the story of salvation and allows us to live it out in our own lives. We will then come to that time which is designated ‘after Pentecost’ or Ordinary Time. Ordinary refers to us marking the weeks by the number (ordinal) of Sundays it’s been since Pentecost. During the Advent through Pentecost period we talk about the salvation story. During the time after Pente- cost we emphasize how to live out the Christian faith in our own daily lives. During this time we take a closer look at the sermons, parables and other teachings of Jesus the Christ. We try to see how they apply to our own setting and lives. We then look at how we can apply those teachings to go on toward “Christian Perfection” as John Wesley would put it. This is a life long work. Message from the Pastor

May and June are here. May 19th is Pentecost and we will have completed the Advent through Pentecost

cycle of the church year. This cycle tells us the story of salvation and allows us to live it out in our own

lives. We will then come to that time which is designated ‘after Pentecost’ or Ordinary Time. Ordinary

refers to us marking the weeks by the number (ordinal) of Sundays it’s been since Pentecost.

During the Advent through Pentecost period we talk about the salvation story. During the time after Pente-

cost we emphasize how to live out the Christian faith in our own daily lives. During this time we take a

closer look at the sermons, parables and other teachings of Jesus the Christ. We try to see how they apply

to our own setting and lives. We then look at how we can apply those teachings to go on toward “Christian

Perfection” as John Wesley would put it. This is a life long work. This is a work we undertake in coopera-

tion with the Holy Spirit as we seek to grow more like Christ each day.

As Paul put it in his letter to the Philippians, “Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached

the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” As you press on to

that goal, may God bless you in your journey. May you seek the company of others who are on the same

quest so that together you may be strengthened for the journey.

Grace and Peace,

Ken

Thank you to those who prepared and served the food

for the Lenten luncheons served at First United Meth-

odist Church. Also, thank you to our piano player.

Your service during this time was appreciated.

Letters from the Mission Field…As a fundraiser for this year's ASP Mission Trip, the team members are

offering to send letters from the mission field. For a donation of $20.46 (the $.46 is for the postage

stamp) the team members will send a letter to the donors from the ASP mission site. In the letters the team

member will tell a little about the family they have met, the work they are doing, and the trip. In the space

below please provide your name and mailing address so the team member will know where to send the let-

ter. Include your donation of $20.46 with your name and address slip and put them together and return

Tom Braker is the May/June Feeding Families in His Name Vol-

unteer of the Month. The idea of a free weekly meal for the peo-

ple of the Fort Scott Community was his idea. He is a member of

the Steering Committee and has been a vital part of the meal’s

success from the very beginning. He weekly visits with our din-

ner guests, remembers their names and interests. He is often

called to the kitchen to do some heavy lifting for the cooks and

has on occasion helped us handle a crisis. Thank you Tom, for

your mission heart and gentle spirit. Submitted by Jean Tucker

Donation of Quilting Supplies

The Quilts to Comfort group was recently sur-

prised with a visit from Marilyn Hile, Norman and

Anna Shaw’s daughter, from San Ramon, CA.

She represented the Shaw family by donating 30

yards of 90” quilt batting and Wal-Mart gift cards

to be used for the purchase of supplies needed by

Quilts to Comfort in honor of her mother, Anna

Shaw. The Quilts to Comfort group are grateful of

this donation and the supplies will be put to good

use. A quilt dedication will be held on May 19

when approximately 30 quilts are to be dedicated

and divided between a local nursing home and the

Ronald McDonald House.

to those who took time to share their visions of

our church’s mission and/or to complete the on-

line survey. The responses will help determine

what we do next. The result of the surveys will be

and in the church office for those who would like

a copy.

The Next Step Team

Knowing Christ, Growing in Christ, Serving Christ and

Sharing Christ

. . . In a nutshell these words describe the work of Christ

in the lives of his children. The Next Steps Team is pon-

dering how our lives, individually and as a church, are be-

ing transformed by our growth in each of these areas.

How do our church activities fit in and strengthen our rela-

tionship with Christ and others in each of these areas? In

which area(s) do we need to provide more help and re-

sources for our church members?

Knowing Christ is primary. Are our lives lived in relation-

ship with Christ and for Christ? Is he the beginning and

the end of our lives? Does he fill our thoughts, shape our

motives, and direct our lives? Do we know – and do we

communicate - that our relationship with Christ is what

makes us a church instead of a club?

Knowing Christ is not a one-time occurrence. Growing in

Christ deepens and strengthens our relationship. How

does our church help us grow in Christ? Worship, Sunday

School, Bible Studies, discussion groups, UMW, UMM,

TASK, XYZ Club, Fiber Fellowship, Quilting, Men’s

Wednesday Work Group, Choir, Praise Band, UMYF,

committees – all are vehicles to help us grow. How else

can we make sure there are suitable opportunities for eve-

ry member to grow?

We are called to Serve Christ by serving each other and

the people he puts in our path. How are we serving those

who attend our church, live in our community, share our

work, or interrupt our comfortable lives? Are we leaving

anyone out? Are we willing to serve and befriend people

we don’t know and/or don’t like?

Sharing Christ comes easily when our relationship with

Christ is growing. We hold an eternal treasure that be-

comes even more valuable when it is shared. How do we

reflect Christ’s nature and share Christ in a manner that

encourages and builds up members of our church, and

makes non-Christians interested in knowing Christ too?

How do we share our journey and listen to the journeys of

others?

Please join the Next Steps Team in pondering how we can

strengthen our relationship with Christ and each other.

We have been blessed so that we can be a blessing.

FIVE FORT SCOTT CHURCHES JOIN TOGETHER TO OFFER VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, MISSIONARY UNITED

BAPTIST CHURCH AND ST. JOHN’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH INVITE CHILDREN FROM THE COMMUNITY TO ATHENS

VBS.

A summer event called “Athens: Paul’s Dangerous Journey to Share the Truth” will

be hosted at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH from JULY 29 thru AUGUST 2. CHIL-

DREN (ages 4 through students completing 5th grade) step back in time at Athens, exploring

some of the adventures the Apostle Paul faced. Kids participate in a memorable Bible-times

Marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible-times snacks, visit Paul, and collect

Bible Memory Makers to remind them of God’s Word. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around

them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes at Celebration—a time of upbeat worship that

gets everyone involved.

Kids at Athens VBS will join nearly a million participants reaching out to needy kids through a hands-on

mission project called Operation Kid-to-Kid, in which families will send photos and personalized Bible coloring

books to children in India.

Athens will run from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. each day. For more information, call First United Methodist

Church at 620-223-1950 or Jan Hedges, 620-728-9001, VBS Director.

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

I am excited to share with you that our church will host VBS this summer, see information arti-cle. As the hosts for VBS we need to ensure this is a meaningful week for the children of the churches involved and also an opportunity to reach out to the children of our community.

In the next few weeks you will be hearing more about the opportunities available for you to help support VBS. We need adults and youth, completed 6

th grade and above, to help with this pro-

ject. I know we will need small group leaders and assistant leaders, shopkeepers (craft activi-ties), helpers for the arena games, food providers and servers, celebration helpers and lots of prayers. Be watching the church bulletin for sign-up sheets and a list of needed materials.

July 29 – Aug 2

If God is touching your heart right now to help with this project, please call the church office 620-223-1950 or Jan Hedges, 620-728-9001.

Second Anniversary

of Feeding Families

in His Name

On May 11, 2013, Feeding Families in His Name will

celebrate their second anniversary. We have served

a weekly meal for 102 weeks and have served over

15,000 meals. I wish to take this opportunity to thank

everyone who has had a part of the success of this

worthwhile project.

We have between 15-20 volunteers each Wednes-

day night to cook, bake, serve, clean, wash dishes,

welcome our guests, pick up and deliver our guests

to the church, and deliver ice for the drinks. These

are weekly volunteers who often are the same ones

week after week. Occasionally a new face shows up.

There are many businesses and persons from the

community who have given of their time, money and

expertise to Feeding Families. Many restaurants

have donated supplies and paper goods. Slade from

Woods Super Market has cut up chickens for

Sharky’s to smoke for a special dinner of smoked

chicken. Our local McDonald’s, Sonic, Subway,

Pump ‘N Pete’s, Marsha’s Great Plains Deli, Bob

Eckles at The Beacon, Jan Tate, agent of American

Family Insurance in Nevada, MO and the Red Lob-

ster of Overland Park, KS have given cups, paper

supplies and food to our weekly meals.

Also much appreciated is the congregation of the

First United Methodist Church of Fort Scott that gives

toward the costs of the meals, the cost of the utilities

and the salaries for the church secretary and custodi-

an whose daily work at the church is increased be-

cause of this work intensive program. Thank you,

Marla and Gene. Thank you Rev. Van and Connie

for your encouragement. Many of our guests look

forward to seeing you and visiting with you.

Weekly we have volunteers from the community who

welcome a chance to give back to their community.

Every month I receive a call from someone wanting

to know how they can help with the meal. All volun-

teers are welcome.

Thank you Ron Sharp and the Board of Trustees whose

responsibilities include the care of the building. Thank

you for your attitude of service and mission which allows

the weekly concerns of the Feeding Families in His Name

program to be so smoothly taken care of. Thank you also

to the Wednesday morning work crew.

To the congregation —-A BIG Thank You for your pray-

ers and donations of money and food. This project is big-

ger than all of us; I believe it is God’s project and His spir-

it is behind its success. It is through His people, you the

congregation of First United Methodist Church of Fort

Scott, that this is accomplished.

One of the nicest benefits of this program is the spirit of

the people who come to volunteer and go away blessed

and thankful for the opportunity to serve “In His Name.”

Needed for

Feeding Families in His Name

Feeding Families in His Name is in need of a commercial

refrigerator and commercial freezer. One of each of

these would help cut our utility costs and give us the

needed room to thaw out frozen meats and vegetables

for our meals without inconveniencing or causing con-

flicts within the church kitchen. If you hear of someone

who has one that they might wish to donate or sell for a

reasonable price please contact me, Jean Tucker, 223-

4617. We can also always use cream of mushroom

soup, cream of chicken soup, flour, sugar, brown sugar,

and the condiments used for our meals—tea, coffee, jelly

catsup, mustard, salad dressing, and mayonnaise. We

purchase milk and bread weekly.
