“Famous Last Words” Worship Series

We often hear about the “Seven Last Words of Christ” before his crucifixion.

And we should, they are powerful and meaningful words from Jesus.

However, don’t you think that the words and encounters after the

Resurrection were even more powerful and meaningful for Jesus’ followers?

The goal of this worship series is to focus on what Jesus teaches us after the Resurrection. Sometimes the

Biblical passages in the Gospels after the Easter event are largely ignored. But there is the “The rest of the

story…” These are actually Jesus ‘famous last words’. What did Jesus want to tell us before he left the earth?

What words of comfort, challenge, guidance, hope, correction, and instruction did he give us?

Worship series begins Sunday, April 12. Join us!

The Church and People with Disabilities

FUMC United Methodist Women (UMW) will host a district-wide study focusing on The Church and People

with Disabilities on Saturday, April 11 from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. This study will encourage and identify ways to

be more inclusive of people living with disabilities. Rev. Bridget Gately of Valley View UMC will instruct us on

how to build awareness in the church regarding issues around disability, to call the church to provide full

accessibility to services and opportunities, and to promote advocacy for justice for people with disabilities.

This study will help understand if our congregational make-up reflect recent studies indicating that one in five

of us has a disability, and are people with visible and hidden disabilities active in leadership roles and fully

integrated into the life of our church. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided for this event. The cost is

$6.00 per person. For more information, contact Esther Swilley at [email protected].

Mission Moments Things are MOVING at Families in Transition (FIT) Closet

Pastor Patrick and others organized the FIT Mile March for Sunday, March 8 to raise awareness about families in our community and to help move goods to the new facility in a joint community effort. Participants were encouraged to visit with marchers they didn’t know about life in transition. Three school board members participated and all marchers will be advocates for families in the future.

In case you missed it, 259 children in the Manhattan-Ogden School District recently self-reported being homeless with a desire to be self-sustaining in stable housing with their family.

FUMC supports the USD 383 FIT Closet providing clothing, school and hygiene supplies to these families. Recently, College Avenue Methodist Church has provided a new home for the FIT Closet to set up a store for families in transition.

During the march, Pastor Patrick connected with one woman and her two daughters. He learned that they had been a family in transition but have since found themselves in stable housing. While no longer homeless, Mom was still in need of assistance and Patrick helped connect her to the new Circles program being hosted a FUMC’s Harris Activity Center beginning this spring.

Others shared that they were marching for reasons that ranged from “Because it is fun” to “Because I love to serve” and “Because no child should be homeless.” While being fueled by the stories they shared, they also left with advocacy sheets to help them talk with others about the realities of poverty in Manhattan and Ogden and how we can all be involved. Marchers were very excited to have the opportunity to help families in transition; over 100 smiling people lined up and carried items the mile between Lee Elementary and College Avenue United Methodist Church.

Anapra Trip Productive Larry Parson and Lynn Blecha found The Susanna Wesley School in Anapra, Mexico bursting with students and expecting many more. Alternatives are being weighed to handle this wonderful problem of success.

In February they joined the mission trip led by University UMC in Topeka. The volunteers participated in many projects at the school including painting the auditorium floor to match one of the school colors, pouring concrete to level the floor in the kitchen, initial floor work and plumbing to add a second restroom for the teachers. They did electrical work to include service upgrades in classrooms and roof flashing and edging to improve roof life.

They also stopped on the way in Wichita to pick up 10,000 pairs of eyeglasses at the Kansas Lions Club Headquarters to deliver in Mexico. Larry and Lynn recommend Anapra as a great place to serve in mission.

Sunday, May 3 Save the Date for Change the World -Sunday, May 3. There will be projects for individuals, families and Sunday school classes with lunch provided. Look for sign-ups in April!

Volunteers Needed to Distribute Food FUMC volunteers are invited to assist with monthly food distribution via Harvesters.

For Cico Park, volunteers are needed on the third Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am.

At the Ogden Community Center, volunteers are needed on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 9:30 am.

Volunteers are also needed on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 1:00 - 3:00 pm in the parking lot at 3rd and Leavenworth. Thank you.
