Sending Forth
Greeters for November 4th: Shelly and Sean Gibson, Alyssa and Nick Fassnacht
We thank the Praise Band for their ministry this morning.
From Pastor Bob: You may be familiar with this word of caution – Pride goeth before a fall – but are unsure where it comes from. You will find this teaching written in full context in the Old Testament book of Proverbs 16:18. Pondering this teaching, I came across something written in the mid-13th Century by Mechthid of Magdeburg that helps unpack this proverb, called The Gate of Love and Grace. Pride is the first sin that begins to chase a person
away from God. and if we don’t leave it, lust grows; and if we don’t leave lust; greed grows; and if we don’t leave greed, laziness grows and if we don’t leave laziness, lying grows; and if we don’t leave lying, perjury grows; and if we don’t leave perjury, anger grows; and if we don’t leave anger, slander grows; and if we don’t leave slander, stubborn ness grows; and if we don’t leave stubbornness, hatred grows; and if we don’t leave hatred, vengeance grows; and if we don’t leave vengeance, hopelessness grows; and if we don’t leave hopelessness, insolence grows; and if we don’t leave insolence, shameless arrogance grows; and if we don’t leave arrogance, wrong wisdom grows; and if we don’t leave wrong wisdom, unbelief grows and says,
“It’s not at all like they say it is.” Right wisdom is Godly wisdom. In today’s reading from Mark 12:28-34, Jesus lifts up Godly wisdom with the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:2-6): “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Then Jesus added, “The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” They go together. You cannot have one without the other.
BY OUR SERVICE AND WITNESS November Chancel Committee: Betty Banks and Mary Jo Kimbro, co-chairs, Carole Deal, Ann Feetham, Barbara Robl, Pam Sharpe, Linda Ward, Starlette Walston Thank you to all who helped support the Fill My Cup women's event, "Meet Him at the Well", with your time, prayers, and delicious desserts! God blessed over 120 women through our speaker, Kelcey Stewart. We recorded the event and If anyone would like a copy, contact Shelley Gibson at [email protected] or call the church office.
Many thanks to all who helped to make our Trunk or Treat a success. The trunks were decorated very creatively, the candy was delicious, and the children and adults dressed in costume were precious. A great time was had by all!
