“Fast Forward”
Welcome to the SEASON of Easter, the 50 day
period of time from the empty tomb to the upper
room of Pentecost. So what would you expect to
hear at church during this time? How about
stories from the book of Acts? Yes, folks, that’s right, instead of
stories about the Emmaus walk or the breakfast on the beach or
doubting Thomas we have stories about the Apostles of the early
church. Doing so MIGHT seem like we are fast forwarding the
church year and that would be correct, but the reason for this is to
give time and highlight the stories that are often not told, the
adventures that happened in the generation after Christ. I have
always found the stories of the early church fascinating. When we
did our Bible Study at Magnolia Terrace on the book of Acts, it was
intriguing to delve deeply into these stories. Acts is a book in the
Bible that is unlike any other; it is not a gospel nor is it a letter to a
person or church. The author Luke is most well-known for his
Gospel, and for good reason, but Acts was written as a sequel to it
to be read with the same importance and emphasis. We are used to
giving the words of Jesus and the Gospel stories featured status.
I’m not saying that this should change, but by highlighting the
stories and struggles that the Apostles went through, it gives us a
chance to compare our own lives and realize that God is STILL just
as active as then. Incidentally, our religious education program is
also going through the book of Acts, learning about the journeys of
Paul. I have had fun bringing in pictures of Athenian ruins and
showing them maps of Asia Minor. The theme of our series in Acts
is “Being a Witness” taken from Acts 1:8 – “But you will receive
power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth." You remember the theme of our annual retreat?
That’s right and we are not going to forget it now, are we? Have
you ever thought of yourself as a witness? Scared of the
responsibility?
In our text for Easter morning in John, Jesus instructs Mary
Magdalene to go tell the others. As someone who isn’t a stranger to
fear, as we see immediately preceding this, she isn’t scared of
spreading the news; she doesn’t stop to consider her words or study
“I have seen the Lord.” It’s natural and from the core of her being.
Have we ever considered that sharing the Good News could be simply
sharing who we are, our story, our time or what we know? Jesus would-
n’t have us hold onto him for very long; the work is out there – we are
Christ’s witnesses; and it is our joyful duty to heed the call.
Blessings,
Pastor Darrin

Trip to El Salvador
From February 23rd to March 4th, I went with a
delegation of eight to visit our association’s
mission partners in El Salvador. Nothing could have prepared me for
what happened there, as I found it a very transformational
experience. We were very busy visiting a clinic, school, significant
landmarks, a hospital, a boarding house (where we stayed),
churches, Mayan ruins, a farm and a soup kitchen. Most impressive
to me were the people of El Salvador, who are so positive,
committed, faithful and genuine people, despite growing up with
such violence. We saw a lot of the best the country has to offer but
also a lot of difficult things about its history and current
circumstances.
I would like to go back to this amazing place and take you with me!
In the meantime, there are several ways we can help them right now.
There is a big need in El Salvador for resources of all kinds. When
we visited the churches there, one of the many things they told us
they needed were Spanish language Bibles. Believe it or not, it costs
less to get them here and send them, than it does to buy them there.
So what I would like to do is collect money for Bibles at our church
and when we reach our goal of 100 Bibles, send 50 each to the
Lutheran Churches in El Paisnal and Apopa. The cost of the kind of
Bibles we would like to send are about $4 apiece. If you would like
to make a donation towards this effort, you may indicate that on
your offering envelope.
Also, children at the Lutherano Salvadoreno School in San Salvador
would love to be pen pals with children here. If your children or
grandchildren are interested, we have information for you to take
home with you about how you can be in contact and begin to write
to a child in El Salvador.
News from Rev. Darrin!
COMMUNITY BREAKFAST
Thank you for your generous
contributions to the Community
Breakfast!!! Remember the breakfast is
the last Sunday of every month! If you
are donating breakfast items, please make sure that your items are
at the church no later than the Friday before the breakfast. There
is a sign up sheet for donated items on the office window. This
month we are serving egg casserole, fresh fruit & toast. Last
month we served multiple people outside the church. We are so
happy we can help our neighbors in need!
DIAMOND DINNER
This special dinner for our “Young at Heart”
members, over the age of 75, will be held on
May 7th. Watch your mailbox and upcoming bulletins for more
information. Mark your calendar!!
Summer Camp registration has begun. If you would like to
attend UCC summer camp at Pilgrim Hills, please let Pastor
Darrin know. A full schedule of summer camps is listed online at
http://www.journeythehills.org/. The church pays ½ of the cost of
attending summer camps.
HOLY JOE’S CAFÉ AND POTLUCK
On Sunday, April 17th Galion First United Church of Christ
Mission Committee will be participating in our yearly Holy Joe’s
Café. As you might recall, this is an outreach project started in
2006 by some military chaplains in Afghanistan or wherever our
troops are stationed overseas. Holy Joe’s provided a relaxed
atmosphere for our service men and women to socialize and receive
emotional and spiritual support while stationed away from home.
Come early to church that day at 9:00 a.m. and the committee will
offer our own kind of café with coffee, tea, sweet treats and a
display of our past and present service men. If weather and
construction permits, we may even be using our new pavilion! We
will also have a potluck following our service that day with our
church family in the dining room. Mark your calendar and plan to
be here on April 17th. Bring your favorite dish to share and enjoy
some coffee and fellowship. All donations collected that day will
be used to purchase coffee for our service men and women.
DISASTER RESPONSE KITS
During the month of April we will again be assembling disaster
response kits by filling buckets with cleaning supplies and bags
with personal care necessities. Buckets and bags with lists of
needed supplies are available at the deacon’s benches in the
sanctuary. If you are too busy to shop or would prefer to let the
Mission Committee members shop for you, leave a donation in the
offering plate or in the church office by April 25th. Once you have
filled your bucket or personal kit, please leave it in the Heritage
Room. On April 30th the disaster response kits will be
delivered to the Northwest Ohio Association spring meeting in
Crestline. No one can predict when a natural disaster will happen,
but with your help we can help the Northwest Ohio Association
disaster response team be one step closer to helping when there is a
need.
HEARTFELT THANKS
The Court family thanks you, the members of First Church,
for your love and support shown during the time of Mary’s
passing. From Pastor Darrin, Jessica, the funeral dinner team,
Adair, and Dale who do the visible things, to the many of you
with the hug, the prayer and the kind word, please know that
you made it possible for us to celebrate Mary’s life in the
setting she wanted. Funerals and memorial services can be
depressing and stressful events. Thankfully, in large part due
to your support, Mary’s was an uplifting occasion. Thank you.
In Christian Love,
Doug and the Court family
Lisa & Crew,
Thank you all so much for your service, for your love, for
your food, just for being here when needed. Not just for Mary,
but of course for Mary, & for any loss through death we
experience here at First Church.
Doug & Family
FINANCE UPDATE
As we close the first quarter of 2016, we are pleased to report
that envelope giving is slightly ahead of last year at this
time. The kitchen remodeling, made possible with funds from
the Virginia Rensch estate, is progressing quickly and should
be completed at the end of April. Electric and concrete will be
completed in the pavilion as soon as weather permits, payable
from the Project Fund. Thank you for your generous support!

Thank you to all those who purchased Easter flowers and to those who
designated their Easter flower to be taken to a member on our Care
List. Proceeds from the Easter flowers will be sent to the United Church
Homes to help cover expenses for those persons in need. You may take
your flowers following the 10:30am Easter Worship Service.
Flower donations are listed in alphabetical order by the last name of
the person the donation is given for. If a name is not specified, the
donation is listed by the donor’s last name.
If you would like to help us deliver the flowers to our members on the
Care List, please take a flower and a tag from the sanctuary door.
