A blank canvasBelow are a few tips if you fancy turning your hand to a bit of DIY to make a property your own

Hanging wallpaper: Try to hang the first length ofwallpaper on a wall that has neither door nor window,so you can hang a full length from the ceiling to thetop of the skirting board.

If the wallpaper has a pattern, you should hang thefirst length over a fireplace or other focal point andthen work away from it in both directions, so that youcan control what part of the design is central andsymmetrical. Complete this area before papering therest of the room.

Updating a kitchen: A few simple changes such as replacingtired looking door and drawer fronts can bring your kitchenback to life. Try integrating new handles and taps and fixcracked or broken tiles to complete your look.

Applying wall tiles: Bed whole tiles so that their faces arelevel as any unevenness will spoil the look. Work on nomore than 1 sq m at a time or the adhesive may hardenbefore all the tiles are in place. Always spread theadhesive horizontally. Place the first tile on then startworking upwards, then outwards against an even rightangle to ensure the tiles are straight. Use a tile spacer inthe angles to ensure that all the tiles are evenly spacedand straight.

Floors: There is a wide range of options when it comes tofloor coverings, from carpets to easy to install woodlaminate. However if you are lucky enough to find aproperty with natural wood flooring, bringing it back toit’s former glory should not prove too difficult for evenan inexperienced DIY enthusiast. Before starting, youshould check that there are no loose boards, these shouldbe secured and any broken ones replaced. Floor sanderscan be hired from tool hire shops. After sanding, anygaps between the boards can be filled with a draught-proof filler and finially seal the wood with a good quality varnish.

Have you been weighing up the options to see if it’s abetter idea to buy a home in walk-in condition, or buy aproperty where you can put your own stamp on it? Hereare DIY tips to help you get started.

Preparing walls: Walls almost always need some surfacepreparation before you can apply paint. Any cracks orholes must be filled. Surfaces must be clean, smooth anddry. If there is any peeling, paint should be stripped backor sanded until there is a smooth finish. Only paint overwallpaper if it is very firmly stuck to the wall.

*Secure any

loose floor boards,

replace any which

are broken before

sanding.

*Only paintover wallpaper if it is very firmly stuck to the wall.

*Hang the

first length

of wallpaper on

a wall with no

doors or

windows if

possible.
