Gospel: Luke 5: 1-11 Lent is a period of forty days during which the whole Church renews itself through prayer and fasting. Today we are reminded that the Israelites wandered for forty years in the desert after God led them out of captivity. We are now observing the forty days of Lent. During the

Easter Triduum, we will celebrate being led from slavery into free-dom. According to today's gospel, Jesus retreated to the desert for forty days to prepare for his mission after being baptized by John the Baptist. Luke dramatically describes what happened to Jesus while he was alone in that deserted place. The devil tempts Jesus with prom-ises of bread (a symbol for material comforts), of power (authority over others), and of false glory (to be gained by daring to test God). But Jesus defeats the devil by defending himself with God's word from the Old Testament. Even then the devil does not give up. He "awaits another opportunity" to tempt Jesus. 1.) Do we ever "test" God's love and care? How might this work against trust in God?

Administrator’s Corner for Parish Bulletin: Feb. 17, 2013 1st Sunday of Lent - C

Does Lent lead us back to God? “For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment” (Joel 2:12). Lent may be a penitential season, but it is also a wonderful reminder that no matter how we let sin interfere in our relationship with God, he always wants us back. Gracious and merciful is he. “Return to me with your whole heart.” Throughout the year, sin creeps into our daily lives almost without our noticing. A bad habit such as becoming preoccupied with material goods or gossiping can keep us from loving God fully. Lent is a time to examine our lives and sweep aside whatever keeps us from giving God our whole heart. “Rend your hearts, not your garments.” God doesn’t just want outward acts of repentance because they can be performed without real sorrow. Our Father wants a change of heart. Start with Confession and then deter-mine to practice virtues such as prudence, temperance, and fortitude. “Gather the people, notify the congregation.” Help spread God’s love to his people. Make a point of inviting someone to attend Mass with you who may not attend regularly or become more active in your parish to build it up. Lent is also the time to attend Mass more often than just once a week and join in the prayers of Christ’s Church. God bless you. Fr. Alex

Esquina del administrador de la Parroquia Boletín: 17 de febrero 2013 1 º Domingo de Cuaresma - C ¿La Cuaresma nos lleva de regreso a Dios? "Para clemente y misericordioso es él, lento a la cólera y rico en bondad, y cediendo en el castigo" (Joel 2:12). La Cuaresma puede ser un tiempo de penitencia, pero también es un maravilloso recordatorio de que no importa cómo dejamos que el pecado interfiera en nuestra relación con Dios; siempre quiere que regresemos a El ya que es cClemente y misericordioso. "Vuelvan a mí con todo vuestro corazón." A lo largo del año, el pecado se apodera de nuestras vidas casi sin darnos cuenta. Un mal hábito, como preocupándose por los bienes materiales o chismear puede impedirnos amar a Dios plena-mente. La Cuaresma es un tiempo para examinar nuestras vidas y dejar a un lado todo lo que nos impide dar a Dios todo nuestro corazón. "Rasgad los corazones y no las vestiduras." Dios no sólo quiere actos externos de arre-pentimiento, ya que pueden llevarse a cabo sin sinceridad. Nuestro Padre quiere un verdadero cambio de corazón. Comience con la confesión y luego detcidase a a practicar las virtudes de la prudencia, la templanza y la for-taleza. "Reúne al pueblo, notifique a la congregación." Ayudar a difundir el amor de Dios a su pueblo.Tome la iniciativa de invitar a alguien que no asiste regularmentea a la Misa para que vaya con con usted ó participate más activamente para hacer crecer su parroquia. El proyecto “Tazón de Arroz” de Catholic Relief Service nos invita a compartir con los más necesitados el dinero que ahorra-mos ayunando o dejando de comprar algo durante la Cuaresma. Nuestro apoyo ayuda a las familias de todo el mundo a través de pro-yectos de CRS para la agricultura, agua limpia, educación y microfinanzas (que estimula el crecimiento de las pequeñas empresas), asi como los proyectos de salud para madres, niños y las personas con el HIV y el SIDA. El 25% del dinero donado se utiliza en nuestro país. Por favor recoja un Tazón de Arroz de una de las puertas entrada de la iglesia; lea las reflexiones diarias, las recetas sencillas y las historias de nuestros hermanos y hermanas en todo el mundo. Announcements: Operation Rice Bowl: During Lent we join in praying as a commu-nity, fasting in solidarity with the hungry, and giving to those most in need. Catholic Relief Service’s Operation Rice Bowl asks us to share with the needy the money we save by fasting or giving up something for Lent. Our support helps families around the world through CRS projects for agriculture, clean, water, educa-tion, and microfinance (which encourages the growth of small businesses) and health pro-jects for mothers and children and those with HIV and AIDS, 25% of the money donated is used in our country. Please pick up an Rice Bowl at any church entrance, read the daily reflections, simple recipes, and the stories of our brother and sisters around the world. Please return your Rice Bowl donation to the Parish office before Easter. Thank you. Food Barrels: Our St. Vincent de Paul conference needs your help to provide food for the poor. Food barrels will be outside the church this week-end. Please donate NON-PERISHABLE, un-breakable food items and please make sure that the date has NOT EXPIRED. Thank you for your generosity.

Thank You! Stations of the Cross: Please join us in praying the Stations of the Cross every Friday after the 8:00am mass and at 7:00pm every Friday during Lent.

Lenten Regulations: ABSTINENCE: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on all Fridays during Lent. FASTING: All those who are 18 and older, until their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together, they should not equal a full meal. Eating be-tween meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be seriously af-

fected. People in doubt about fasting or abstinence should consult a parish priest.

Baptisms: Please note that during Lent February 13th –March 31st there will be NO BAPTISMS. In the event of an emer-

gency please call the Parish office to speak with a Priest. Baptism will start taking place after Easter Sunday. For more information about Bap-tisms please call the Parish office.
