Pastor’s Letter

The Silence of the Watchman

"Be watchful! Be alert!” (Mk 13:33).

This call to be alert ushers us into the Advent season. And this year we should be even more alert because this year’s

Advent will be short: only three weeks. Christmas will come right after Sunday the 24th.

As part of the journey Towards a Family Friendly Parish, this year we have the program Towards a Missionary Family.

God transforms us through the sacraments and God transforms others through us. During this Advent I would like to

present some elements related to the sacraments to introduce us more into the “sacramental language” of Creation.

These elements will be silence, water, oil and light.

Today I would like to talk about silence. Silence is necessary for the watchman, and manifests his watchful attitude. Es-

pecially during the night, because we cannot see, we listen more intently. In the night of faith, we listen to God’s word

which will reveal us the presence of the Son of God. We make silence to hear what “No ear has ever heard, no eye ever

seen” (Is 64:2-3).

"Be watchful! Be alert!” (Mk 13:33). In this watch of Advent, silence is essential.

To learn about this silence I would like to go to the school of the Liturgy and the Sacraments. Although silence is not the

matter of any sacrament, it is a seasoning which makes it tasteful.

The liturgy of the sacraments is a good exemplification of the importance of silence. The priest executes the sacramen-

tal action which consists in words and actions. For example, the priest pours water on a child saying “I baptize you…”

Those words give the meaning of what is happening there. Those words reveal the invisible action of God signified by the

visible action of the priest. Only if we pay attention and give faith to those words we can enter the sacramental mystery.

In addition, every sacrament is preceded by the reading of God’s Word which unveils what is about to happen in the sac-

rament.

Thus I would like to invite you to work on practicing silence during this Advent. For sure during Mass, of which sacred

silence is part. Also at home, as a sign that we are alert preparing for Jesus’ coming. Especially giving every day a little

time to pray and check on our watchful attitude.

Making silence from our screens. Maybe they are mute, but they introduce a lot of noise in our hearts making genuine

communication with others less spontaneous and fluent.

Making silence in our Christmas decorations. Christmas starts on the 24th. Let keep our Christmas lights off until the

one who is the light of the World will shine.

This silence will be the sign, the “sacrament” that we are watchful, that we are alert. Happy Advent!

Prayer for the

Advent Wreath

If you have an Advent Wreath,

gather around it to pray:

O God, by whose word all things are sanctified,

pour forth Your blessing upon this wreath, and

grant that all who use it may prepare our hearts

for the coming of Christ and may receive from

You abundant graces, Who lives and reigns for-

ever. Amen.

Then, every day for the first week of Advent, as

you light the first candle pray:

O Lord, stir up Thy might, we beg Thee, and

come that by Thy protection we may deserve to

be rescued from the threatening dangers of our

sins and saved by Thy deliverance. Through

Christ our Lord. Amen.
