First Quarter 2016 Report
Brigitte Scott, Ph.D. Program Development and Evaluation Specialist, MFLN Hannah Davis, M.A. MFLN Evaluation Assistant
This material is based upon work supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Office of Family Readiness Policy, U.S. Department of Defense under Award Numbers 2014-48770-
22587 and 2015-48770-24368.
First Quarter 2016 Overview
Thirteen professional development webinars were delivered during the first quarter: three in January (1 PF, 1 NW, 1 MC), five in February (1 PF, 2 FT, 1 MC, 1 NW), and five in March (1 PF, 1 FT, 1 MC, 1 FDEI, 1 NW). The first MFLN Lunch and Learn was delivered in March FDEI as a follow-up to their March webinar. At the end of the webinar, participants were encouraged to try several approaches to adult learning in their own work. These approaches had been presented and discussed during the webinar, including several concrete examples for application in professionals’ work environments. Participants were invited to return two weeks later to discuss their experiences applying these approaches in the lunch and learn session. The lunch and learn format differed from a typical MFLN webinar in that participants were able to use their audio to verbally share experiences and stories. FDEI staff moderated conversation occurring over audio and in the chat pod, allowing participants to drive the conversation. There were eight non-MFLN participants in this session, three of whom were actively engaged in the chat and over audio. The session was viewed as a success, particularly as the network’s first effort with this approach to program delivery. Employer affiliation was reported predominately as “other” (private sector, nonprofit, etc.) by live events participants. In an optional webinar evaluation survey question, the majority of respondents have described their employer as “other” (private sector, nonprofit, etc.). Prior to February 2016, the employer affiliation question was asked in our our webinar evaluation surveys. To reduce survey length and to potentially garner more responses, this question was removed from the evaluations and asked using a polling format in live events.

Social media reach and engagement continues to grow across the network. The MFLN social media strategy was launched at the face to face meeting in late March. Notable Facebook shares during the first quarter include:

Facebook engagement (FB people talking/reach) across the network was highest in January at 4%, dropping by the end of the first quarter to 2%. The falling engagement rate was a function of the rising network reach throughout the quarter. MFLN Facebook reach was 29,457 in January, reaching 65,211 at the end of the first quarter. Twitter engagement increased through the first quarter. Fifty-eight blogs were published during this reporting period. FD posted 13, FDEI posted 10, MC posted 11, PF posted 13, CCB posted 1, NL posted 2, NW posted 4, and FT posted 4. Unique pageviews of our main extension.org/militaryfamilies page remained fairly steady throughout the first quarter, while unique pageviews of our blog pages rose steadily.
