Senior PastorOn Politics: Part 1

Jesus was not political. Some of his followers were. They were called Zealots. One of Jesus’ apostles, Simon, was a Zealot. The Zealots emerged as a patriotic reactionary movement against Roman rule. Their roots may trace back to one Judas of Galilee who attempted a revolt in 6AD against the census put in place by Publius Suplicius Quirinius, as you re-member from the Luke 2 birth narrative of Jesus. The Zealots believed in Israel and believed that the Romans had no business ruling over them. They believed that God wanted Israel under the rule of the Jews—a real rule, unlike Herod’s puppet-kingship—totally free from Rome. Zealots were very political; they supported forces and ideas that supplied momentum to resisting Roman rule. They would have been happy to give their lives overthrowing Rome and taking back Jerusalem for good. We are in an election year, which means between now and November we will be forced to endure the non-stop scathing polemics of Fox, CNN and MSNBC; their easily-agitated, snarky spin; and their high blood pressure acrobatics in defense of one candidate or another. They look for blood and pounce at the first whiff. They criticize mercilessly and throw all blame across the table at their opponents. It’s no surprise that we begin to feel like specta-tors at WWF wrestling matches. In fact, it begins to feel too much like highly-emotional spectating. People drop snidely quips of their polit-ical foes at every chance, testing the water to see whether you and I will echo their sentiments. Do we take the bait? Do we jump into the feeding frenzy? It depends whom you favor. It’s a lot like being a fan, which is only short for fanatic. Angels or Dodgers? Trojans or Bruins? (Some of you may be frothing already “How dare you mention the lousy Angels in the same sentence as the righteous Dodgers!?”) Like superfans, we can get so emotionally invested in our party or candidate that anyone supporting the opponent begins to look…well, stupid, wrong, unholy, unrighteous and a total threat to the American way! Our Christianity forbids us from getting out of control over this stuff. It is just an election. There are good Christian brothers and sisters sitting in the pews near you who feel as strongly about their candidate or party as you do yours. Do you really want to deliver them your cheap shots? Of course not. Jesus didn’t tell us to pick a party and give our whole passions to it. He never once spoke up against Rome. Not once. He was non-political, apolitical, post-political—whatever you like—and as his followers we need to em-body something of that higher perspective. It’s good to care and fine to enjoy the energy of the blessed American electoral process, but let us keep our heads—our Christian perspective—which is well above party politics. Our hearts and passions were not given to us for them to be spent on causes so cheap as party politics. Let us keep our sense of perspective, our senses of humor, and our love for one another—despite political leanings—constant and strong indeed.

The Mack Family is one of the families that attends our Preschool! They lost everything in a fire last month that started from an electrical short in a new lamp they had purchased. No one was hurt, but all personal property appears to be a total loss.

B&G, Reach Team Summer is in full force and boy has it been getting hot. Now that Preschool is out for the summer it’s time to try and get some things done around the campus. We are working on having a new coating on the balcony outside the Sunday

School rooms, replacing air and water filters in the classrooms, and continuing to just repair things as needed. It is just like what you have to do with your own home. As things age you need to repair and replace. Our property is over 57 years old. We have been given this great property to share with our community in many ways, but it takes many hands to maintain it.

There are always opportunities for you to pitch in and be part of the team around the church. You don’t have to attend meetings. All you have to

do is let me know what type of projects you like to work on and when one needs done we will contact you. There are gardens that need tending, bushes

that need trimming, gutters cleaned out, occasional electrical work, and many other things. If there is a project you would like to work on just let me know. Any questions please call me at 909-949-8427

I’d like to introduce to you FPCU’s newest team: Reach! The Reach Team was recently added to work alongside our current teams Gather, Grow, Worship and Serve to meet some needs we’ve noticed deserve some special attention at our church.

The Reach Team has 3 main goals:

Outreach – Encouraging members of our community not currently attending a church to visit FPCUEvangelism – To lead people into Christian Faith and a life in FPCU.Membership – To help outsiders become insiders and to help new mem-bers become active within the church.

We have several exciting events coming up, but we need your help! If you would like to join the Reach Team or have any ideas or suggestions, please contact me at 909-908-3146 or [email protected].

Treasurer’s Corner At the request of Session, Trustees agreed to provide quarterly reviews of the church’s financial situation. The purpose of this report is to give the congregation a status report of the financial situation of the church for the second quarter (April 1 – June 30) and the year-to-date (Jan.1 – June 30). It is not an encouraging picture. When the 2016 Program Budget was approved last December, it contained some ambitious assumptions and concepts in order to create a budget in which projected revenues at least equaled projected expenses. The most ambitious concept involved renting unused space to smaller churches who desired to meet in a real church atmosphere versus an industrial building or a commercial storefront. The objective for 2016 is to generate $62,100 in space rental income. The second quarter of 2016 generally continued the less than positive example set in the first quarter. Overall revenues have not kept up with expenditures. Year-to-date, $23,200 had to borrowed from Prudent Reserves to meet daily expenses in January, February, and April. If current trends continue, our year end deficit could be as high as $51,180 Pledge revenue was down during the 2nd the quarter and year-to-date timeframes. Sunday plate offerings are up in the 2nd quar-ter and year-to-date. Overall fixed expenses were lower than projected for the 2nd quarter and year-to-date. One lease agreement for the upstairs chapel was signed in March. Space rental interest continues but has leveled off. Wedding revenue is disappointing.

Significant Financial Indicators During the Second Quarter and Year-to-Date Follow:

Checking Account: The Church Checking Account opened April 1 with a balance of $6,535.89.The Church Checking Account closed June 30 with a balance of $6,378.84.

However, it is important to remember that $7,000.00 had to be borrowed from Prudent Reserves to meet daily expenses in April. The total year-to-date amount borrowed is $23,200.

Potential Salary Savings:Defer hiring a new Associate Pastor (May-December). Savings $52,560

Recommendations:1. Hiring an Associate Pastor (or any other new personnel) shall be done with financial considerations in mind.

2. Formally identify Gael Lecce as the church wedding coordinator; create a team to assist her; and develop and implement a marketing program regarding our church as a wedding/reception venue.

3. Continue the strong program, working with our realtor, to market our facilities to Christian congregations and organizations looking for better space to meet and worship.

4. Finally, a strong emphasis by Session and the Sunday pulpit on giving is im-perative for the remainder of the year to eliminate mounting deficits and achieve a balanced budget.
