GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Prelude

Welcome and Church Life Notes

Introit

Call to Worship (from Psalm 133)

One: How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.

All: It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore.

Hymn “We Are One in the Spirit” verse 1 #300

We are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord; we are one in the Spirit; we are one in the Lord,

and we pray that all unity may one day be restored:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love; yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

One: Lord God, as we see the chaos in our streets and in the nation, we find ourselves at a loss. How

to confront in love? How to speak the truth in love? How to work for peace?

All: We are overwhelmed, and we tend to throw up our hands and walk away from these

troubling days. Forgive us, Lord for resignation and apathy. Strengthen us in the faith that

acknowledges your will for the world, and move us to pray for peace in all hearts, that we

might honor your goodness and truth. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

(A moment for silent personal prayer of confession)

Assurance of Pardon One: By Christ’s work, we are reconciled and united with God and with one another. Thanks be to God

for the Good News:

All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen.

Choral Response “Gloria Patri” #581

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be; world without end! Amen. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

One: The peace of Christ be with you.

All: And also with you.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD

Interlude Jacob Efthimiou, cello and Stephen Joven-Lee, piano

Prayer for Illumination Almighty God, in you are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Open our

eyes that we may see the wonders of your Word; and give us grace that we may clearly understand and freely choose the way of your wisdom; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Genesis 45:1-15 Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, ‘Send everyone away from me.’ So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?’ But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come closer to me.’ And they came closer. He said, ‘I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither ploughing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, “Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. I will provide for you there—since there are five more years of famine to come—so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty.” And now your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is my own mouth that speaks to you. You must tell my father how greatly I am honored in Egypt, and all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here.’ Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, while Benjamin wept upon his neck. And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Sermon “The Best Ending Possible” Rev. Dr. Lisa Ruth Mays

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

Hymn “We Are One in the Spirit” verse 2 #300

We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand; we will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand, and together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land: And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love; yes, they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

Unison Prayer All: Almighty God, you have taught us that all our deeds without love are worth nothing. Send

your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the very bond of peace and of all goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Please take a few moments to welcome Darcy and offer any assistance as he works to learn the myriad of tasks associated with this position. THOUGHTS ON GIVING: “For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29) God has a special mission in mind for each of us. God has given us the gifts we need to accomplish that mission. We are called to be good stewards by using those gifts to do the work that God has planned for each of us. If we deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then some part of God’s work will be left undone. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER: That we may show our gratitude for God's great gifts through our active participation in the ministry of God's Church.

Volunteers are desperately needed for receiving and pricing and/or working in the store when it is open. Other needs are taking surplus to the dump or a donation receiving location once a week. We continue to need handle bags of all sizes as well.

Extra garden produce? Don’t let it go to waste! The Delhi Food Bank and the Delhi Senior Center will both happily take your excess to share with the community.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we discover new ways to be the church. We are called by God to serve in creative ways during these ever-changing times!
