Let Congress Know You Love Your Credit union

a Letter from First Northern

Dear Members,

recently the press has reported that both Houses of Congress are considering possible legislation to reform the U.S. tax code.

it appears lawmakers are considering a “blank piece of paper” approach. Under that scenario, all exemptions are removed from the tax code and Congress would then start from scratch to write new code. if Congress goes down that road, the credit union tax-exempt status is gone, leaving us to fight for it back under the new code being formed. failure to regain such a status could have dire consequences for members of credit unions throughout the U.S., and right here at first northern.

Because of this very real possibility, i’m asking you to act now to preserve our credit union, and all the ways you benefit from being a part of First Northern.

our credit union is all about providing great financial services. that’s our sole purpose, and it’s what distinguishes us from other financial institutions, particularly banks. a bank’s first priority is to maximize shareholders’ profits – from the rates and fees charged to its customers for loans and services. on the other hand, first northern Credit Union is a not-for-profit organization, owned by the membership. We typically offer lower rates on loans, higher returns on savings and lower or fewer fees for services. We accomplish this by providing financial services at reasonable costs and returns – not by focusing on large profits. You might say a bank uses people to make money. first northern uses money to help people. By making financial services more affordable, we help you reach your goals and improve your financial well-being.

now, some (mostly large banks) say credit unions should pay income taxes, even though it was banks (not credit unions) that took huge government bailouts a few years back. our government has also been squeezed for more ways to generate revenue. this combination puts credit unions and its members at risk. the truth is, if credit unions were taxed, it’s unlikely their members could continue to receive lower rates on loans, higher savings return, and low fees. in that respect, you might say taxing credit unions is really a tax on 96 million credit union members nationwide.

if the savings and service you enjoy at first northern is important to you, please take a moment to ask Congress to preserve credit unions’ tax status as part of tax reforms occurring now. Without that, you could lose the many benefits you enjoy.

Visit DonttaxMyCreditunion.org to send a pre-written email to your Member of Congress today, or call them at 877-642-4223. Simply tell them, “Don’t tax My Credit Union!”

You may have come to first northern looking for a great loan rate. perhaps you read about first northern’s free Value now Checking account and decided it was too good to pass up. or maybe a friend told you about our great service or how first northern helped them save money.

no matter how you picked the credit union, you’ve become part of a not-for-profit financial cooperative, just like 96 million other americans who are members of credit unions nationwide. and while we may look like a bank, there are important differences:

• Banks exist to make a profit for shareholders. But not-for-profit credit unions invest profits back into the cooperative, offering more favorable rates and fewer fees. the difference is substantial, amounting to more than $100 per household each year!

• Because we’re not focused on profits, credit unions are able to assist their communities in many ways. in June, first northern employees took part in the Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon and transformed an overgrown park in Garfield park into an area for a farmer’s market. first northern has also participated in an annual blood drive and dog wash in rockford, collected school supplies for each community that we serve, and partnered with exelon for their United Way Giving Campaign. See page 12 for more ways that we have been involved in your community.

Don’t tax My Credit union

Page 7: First Northern Credit Union Newsletter

Summer 2013 7

• Credit unions do pay taxes. for instance, they pay property taxes to support local schools, libraries, fire departments, police, and other necessities. they also pay fiCa, unemployment, state industrial, and personal property taxes.

not-for-profit organizations do not pay a federal tax on profits -- the so-called corporate tax. it’s been that way since Congress passed the credit union act in 1934.

Some people in Congress are now taking exception to this and are suggesting that credit unions start paying this tax in order to improve the federal deficit.

paul Gentile, Vp of Communications at the Credit Union national association, believes this repeal would jeopardize operations at credit unions nationwide.

“Credit unions serve middle america, they provide a financial alternative like no other in the

marketplace. We are there solely for our members and want them to know if this exemption goes away it would dramatically impact the charter going forward and likely the benefit they enjoy today. 96 million members would go away.”

first northern and credit unions around the country are asking for your help to keep our tax-exempt status in order to continue to serve our communities and provide members with lower rates and fees.

if you appreciate first northern and the services that we provide, please consider contacting Congress to tell them “Don’t tax My Credit Union!” it only takes a few minutes. a prewritten email is waiting for you to send to Congress at http://www.donttaxmycreditunion.org/take-action/. or call 877-642-4223 toll free to contact your Congressman.

We thank you for your continued support of first northern and credit unions nationwide.

What is your job description? District Manager of Financial Sales/Services - I oversee the everyday operations of three branches in the Rockford and Freeport area.

What do you like most about your job? Every day is different for me when I come to work. One day I might be at an event helping raise money for a worthy cause in the Rockford or Freeport communities and the next day I might be in the office working with members trying to figure ways to save them money.

How long have you been with First Northern? It is hard to believe that this year makes 13 years with First Northern Credit Union! I am fortunate to work for a great company and also work with an amazing group of people. Time goes fast when you enjoy what you do every day.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? There are so many things I find rewarding in my job, but the one thing that will always top the list is working with members. Working with people on their financial needs is why I have been in the financial industry for over 25 years.

What are a few of your favorite things? My favorite things to do are anything that involves being outdoors and with my family. My wife (Julie) and I have three children under the age of 10. It is always our goal to keep them active at all times. We try to lead by example by doing the same in our own lives. In fact next month our children will have the opportunity to cheer their parents on at a triathlon in a suburb of Chicago.
