“God’s Work, Our Hands” Day was a huge success. Here is a re-cap of the day……..

After our Worship with Holy Communion we shared a meal together. Our Team in the kitchen cooked meals for a

homeless shelter and soup and cookies to be used for shut in’s. A team tied blankets for those who are ill and some of

the kids made cards for future visits. We painted some old benches used for the church stand and cleaned up some

trees and gutters at the church. A team planted trees and cleaned up a memorial stand in town and will be pouring

cement this week. One team cleaned the local park in town that hosted a “rib-fest” the day before. That team also

cleaned up debris and raked at the Lutheran Cemetery. Another team helped elderly members at their homes by

cleaning, mowing, washing and picking up sticks along with cleaning gutters. Three different groups went to nursing

homes to visit some shut-ins and brought those flowers and good company. One gentleman mowed a family’s lawn as

the husband had back surgery and life was getting very tough for them. They will be going back with a professional

tree cutter this week to help them to get rid of some trees in need of disposal. As everyone came back we had some

light discussion and Root Beer Float’s. It was a great day….

What an intentional great day of service! I know that many of you do these activities every day, yet it was such fun

working side by side with the young and the old together. We are so blessed to have a church to hear the Word and live it

out.

Activity is in full swing and this is a good thing. Faith in Action is starting, Sunday School will begin on September 28th,

2014 and Confirmation is in full swing. 25 kids made their First Communion on the 21st of September. Six students of

the Word will make their Affirmation of Faith, Confirmation, on October 25th, 2014. Committees are working hard to do

the duties of the church whether it planning activities for the youth, getting the doors in, picking the music for our

worship, starting a Bible study again, or asking ourselves how we can include and invite people to church.

We begin to look in the next few months at the “Marks of Discipleship.” The Stewardship Committee is working on our

first one, “Giving.” They are planning our “Consecration Sunday” and we are hearing from some of our members why

they give.

This is an important discipleship practice. We get to give, not to earn grace or forgiveness, but to say thank you for the

blessings that we have. When I look around at First Lutheran I see so many.

Giving is an act of Worship as we continue to spread the Good News to all people just like Jesus commanded.

What is the correct question? Is it, “How much money does the church need this year?” or “God has blessed me in so

many ways, how do I feel God calling me to give?” 1

Please plan on celebrating our blessings at First Lutheran on October 12th, 2014 with Worship and Holy Communion at

9:30 and a celebration and dinner following.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Brenda Wicklund.

All things are yours…..and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.

Middle School Gathering

November 22-23, 2014

Grades 6-9, Cragun's Resort

"FOREVER" Confirmation Theme: The Sacraments

The Middle School Gathering is for youth in grades 6-9 and their adult leaders. This

event gathers young people to grow in their faith by focusing on common confirmation

teachings presented in a unique way. The event includes large group assemblies with

a keynote speaker ( AGAPE-Dave Scherer) and band, learning clusters (small group

learning), family time (time to meet with your church group), hotel life (fun activities

including inflatable games, basketball, swimming pool , Wii, board games and crafts,

prayer room, dance music and more), and worship.

Join nearly 1,000 middle school youth and adults for a weekend of fun, friends,

learning, laughing, play, worship and so much more! The theme for 2014 is "Forever" -

in the Sacraments we are FOREVER given our identity as child of God, and we are

strengthened in that relationship FOREVER!

Wanted - Assorted Crosses! Each year for the Middle School Gathering, we ask congregations to invest in the faith life of our youth by creating a symbol the youth can take home to remember that they

are loved by God, and that we take our baptismal promises seriously! This year we are looking for assorted crosses from key chain size to no bigger than a square foot. Be

creative They might be key chains, magnets, necklaces...made out of wood, crocheted, soldered nails...your imagination is the limit! More information can be found at

www.nemnsynod.org/MSG.

Early registration: $ 40 (posted on or before Oct. 16) Later registration $ 60 (posted on or before Oct. 17)

We will be starting a Bible Study the 3rd

Sunday in October at 6:30 pm.

Hope to see!

Coming up on Sunday, October 12th

is our congregations “Consecration

Sunday.” This is the Sunday we return our Statement of Giving card that

helps us with our financial commitment to the church.

Pledging our giving helps the church plan the budget for the

upcoming year.

God has blessed this church and its member in many ways and this is our way of

returning to the Lord a portion of all the He has done for us.

Please plan to come to worship on Consecration Sunday. After worship there will be a

Celebration Luncheon and Fellowship. The Statement of Giving Card, the reservation

card for the luncheon, and a letter from the Stewardship Board was sent out to all

members on Sept. 23rd

.

Thank you to Pat Anderson for transposing piano music for the new

Sunday Worship Service.-First Word. Also thank you to Elaine Jensen for

complying the new First Word Worship Booklet.

Thank you to Ashley and Kathy Thompson, Jill Bonn, Candi Nelson and

Mindy Johnson for helping with First Communion Classes.

What a Wonderful Day! Thank you to all the volunteers for the service you

provided throughout the community on “God’s Work. Our Hands” Sunday.

We are surely blessed. Hope you all got to see and enjoy it. Watch the

bulletin board for pictures in the next couple of weeks.

Faith Circle started an ongoing mission project for each month. We ask

members to join us and bring COMBS during the month of OCTOBER

for homeless packets. There will be a basket on the table in the narthex.

THEME: REPAIRER OF BROKEN WALLS

ISAIAH 58:12, “Your ancient ruin shall be rebuilt; you shall rise up the foundation of many

generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.”

Please join us for a day of fellowship, learning, lunch, singing, worship, displays and a bit of

business. For more information check out the bulletin board in the hallway.

Just a reminder that our Soup/Sandwich-Craft-Bake Sale will be Saturday, November 8th. Watch for more details in the November newsletter.

At our Hinckley Community meal on August 27th we served 112 people plus

“A Place for You.” This meal was created and prepared by Amy Tvedt and

Gail Wells, and a wonderful team of volunteers. We received $297.00 in

free-will offerings. Charles Mans will coordinate our next Community Meal

on Tuesday, September 30th

from 5:30-7 p.m. This meal is on a Tuesday

instead of Wednesday. We would appreciate donations of produce for the

Free Farmers Market.

The Stewardship team is having a meeting to decide if we should continue these meals. We

would appreciate your input to help us make the best decision for God, our church, our

congregation and community. Paper and a basket will be in the Narthex for this purpose.

The Hinckley Community Meal has grown from serving 88 to 112 people. If we continue the

meals would anyone be willing to form a team of 3 or 4 people to organize and prepare a meal?

If we have enough teams to do a month each, that would be great. We already have a great

group of volunteers to serve. Please let Amy Tvedt or Gail Wells know if you’re interested in

this opportunity. Thank you, The Stewardship Board.
