In the spirit of Being Faurecia, the team at the
Chattanooga, Tennessee Plant (FECT) recently hosted
a competition to create sculptures from scrap.
“We challenged both shifts to come up with ideas
using scrap material to build a sculpture representing
Faurecia,” Bhanu Arya, Plant Manager, said. “Plant
leadership was going to pick the winner based off
the idea and allow the winner to go ahead and build
the sculpture."
The judges believed the two concepts were very
ingenious, but also different, and declared both
of them winners. The two shifts then crafted their
sculptures over the course of a month, during any
available time from their regular routines.
On first shift, Emmanuel Jackson, GAP Leader, designed
and created a Being Faurecia Energy minion. On second
shift, Emanuel Rivera, Welder, designed and created the
Eiffel Tower as a nod to Faurecia’s French roots. Both
sculptures are now on display in the office area of
the plant.

The event was a celebration of the teamwork that has gone into the site
since its groundbreaking in July 2015. Called Columbus South, the
400,000 square-foot facility, will produce a new, high-tech emissions
control product for Cummins Emissions Systems, Inc. called the
compact mixer.
“This is an outstanding testament to the dedication and energy of the
North American team,” Patrick Koller, CEO, said at the event. “I thank those
who’ve worked tirelessly to get this plant to where it is today, and I look
forward to your continued success in the region.”
During the event, which was hosted on the plant floor, speakers discussed
what this new facility means for Faurecia, the partnership between
Cummins and Faurecia, and the Columbus community. Those who spoke
included Koller; Christophe Schmitt, Executive Vice President of FECT;
Mark Stidham, President of Faurecia North America; Dave DeGraaf,
President of FECT North America; Amy Adams, Vice President of CES;
and James Lienhoop, Mayor of Columbus.
“When it’s completed later this year, Columbus South will bring together
advances in automation, data processing, Internet tools, hardware and
collaborative workplace environments,” Stidham said. “Connectivity and
these technologies, including collaborative robots, an autonomous unit
transfer system and a synchronized digital planning schedule system,
have never been combined into a single facility. Here, they will all sit
under one roof.”
In addition to the remarks, guests toured the shop floor and learned
about the new processes and equipment that will be in place when the
launch is complete. Experts from the plant shared simple examples of
how technology is improving the plant’s industrial practices.
“This facility represents our entry into Industry 4.0, a revolutionary
concept incorporating connectivity, automation, data processing
and hardware to advance the manufacturing industry,” Mike Galarno,
Plant Manager of Columbus South, said. “We are proud to be the first
plant to incorporate many of these leading technologies to create
efficient systems and an innovative working experience for employees.”
NEW PLANT MODERNIZES MANUFACTURING PROCESSES
Columbus South will drive the company’s digital transformation. It
will use new technologies that are leading organizations to modern-day
FIRST INDUSTRY 4.0 PLANT BRINGS COMPANY'S TRANSFORMATION TO LIFE
In early October, FECT unveiled a $64 million state-of-the-art, data-driven manufacturing facility in Columbus, Indiana as the company’s first Industry 4.0 facility.

manufacturing and leave behind the days of plants filled with
inefficiencies, inaccuracies and aging technology.
“Columbus South contributes to the shifting landscape of the industry
to one that is modern, clean and technologically advanced, and aimed
at attracting a new generation of employees,” DeGraaf said.
The Columbus South facility’s digital environment will feature many new
systems and processes including:
Self-learning autonomous intelligent vehicles (AIVs) to transport
parts to the assembly line
Continuous data collection, which helps employees predict and
prevent equipment failures
A completely paperless environment that relies on digital systems
to keep employees connected and informed
An open-concept design and large screens, laptops and smartphones
to encourage collaboration
Columbus South will also have a combination of collaborative robots,
or “cobots.” These are automated robotic vehicles that will allow better
real-time collaboration and communication. Collectively, Columbus South
is expected to analyze terabytes of data daily, requiring a full-time, on-site
mathematician to continually review data and predict issues before
they occur.
“Columbus South isn’t only about the product and the processes,”
DeGraaf said. “People are an important part of the equation. Ultimately,
these advanced technologies, like the AIVs and cobots, will enable
employees to work more efficiently, experience less physical stress and
improve work-life balance.”
COMPACT MIXER BORN FROM PARTNERSHIP
The product manufactured at the site is also part of the equation when
innovating for the future. The compact mixer technology for commercial
vehicles is part of the inline system that will be manufactured at the plant.
As a redesign of current systems in production, the Inline systems
including the Compact Mixer offer significant advantages for both the
environment and customer.
“We leveraged our passenger car knowledge and applied that to
commercial vehicle, on-highway systems,” Robin Fulton, Commercial
Director for Off-Highway (FECT), said. “This allowed for a reduction in
package size of 60 percent, and in weight of 40 percent, giving the end
customer cost savings and valuable flexibility for installation.”
Fulton explained, too, that upfront product cost isn’t the only area of
savings for the customer. Because fuel is a primary cost for CVE fleets,
the reduction in weight helps keep these lower.
At the event, executives from Faurecia and Cummins both spoke about
the collaboration between Faurecia’s expertise and Cummins’ commercial
vehicle history. Both organizations expressed hope that this partnership
will continue in the future.
“Our teams have worked together for many years on the development of
the latest generation emissions control system that will be launched
shortly at Columbus South,” Schmitt said. “The efforts of the two teams
are a result of both companies’ drive to not only reduce emissions, but to
also drive toward a cleaner and more sustainable future. As the industry
becomes more intent on creating a better environment, Faurecia has put
air quality solutions at the forefront of our strategy, and the investment
here in Columbus is a great example of our commitment to that strategy.”
The compact mixer with the single module will be produced at Columbus South for Cummins Emissions Solutions.
ABOVE Columbus South broke ground in July 2015 and raised its flag this October.
BELOW Faurecia presented a check to The Love Chapel for the more than $22,000 it raised in Columbus during FUELS, demonstrating its commitment to the community.
