Introduction

Kennon Bry Fretwell (1853-1940) of Portland, Oregon remembers the family tradi-tion "at the beginning" with three Fretwell brothers, two of them living instates adjacent to South Carolina. No record has been found yet establishing a rela-tionship among the men in Surry County: Joseph (ca1743-1784, SurryCo., NC) , William (ca1792-1867, Henry Co., VA) and John (ca1770-1847, Anderson Co., SC). John has several descendants named Joseph and a diligentsearch has been made to connect them to Joseph (ca1743-1784, Surry Co., NC), whereas records do show Joseph to be the son of William Fretwell(ca1700-1786, Cumberland County, Virginia. Robert T. Fretwell (ca1911-) remembers his father, Arthur Gibbs Fretwell, Jr. (1879-1919) telling him that "three brothers came from Wales, England.They might have had their father with them…" (2013).
