  • This month in First For Business wecelebrate the vital role being playedby entrepreneurship and businessstart-ups in Sheffield City Region.

The return of MADE: The EntrepreneurFestival to Sheffield City Hall brings apacked programme of inspirationalspeakers, including the man who mightappear at first glance to be an unlikelycover star for a business publication.

Nevertheless JB Gills conversion fromsinging with boy band JLS to owning andmanaging his own farm, as well asfronting a childrens BBC show, is likely toprovide one of the most inspirational, aswell as entertaining, elements of theevent when he takes to the podium.

JB is one of many keynote speakers froma variety of backgrounds, includingleading cookery author andentrepreneur Annabel Karmel MBE, headof digital at Innocent Drinks Joe McEwanand telesales technique master AnthonyStears, who seem to have the happyknack of either creating fabulouslysuccessful businesses out of nothing, orinspiring others to strike out and betheir own boss.

Another major player on the bill is KevinByrne, founder and CEO ofcheckatrade.com. The inspiration for hisbusiness came when a tornado swept

through his home town of Selsey, causing10million worth of damage. Whenrogue traders attempted to cash in onthe misfortunes of local people, Kevinsaw the need to create a nationwidecollective of reliable traders.

MADE celebrates the very best in Britishbusiness and has become a major eventin the entrepreneurial business calendar, attracting leaders from business, government and media. First ForBusiness is proud to be a media partnerof MADE 2015 and you can read allabout the festival in this issue.

To misinformed outsiders, Sheffield mayappear to be an unlikely setting tocelebrate the vital role played byindependent-minded businessmen andwomen. The old clich about theSocialist Republic of South Yorkshire, coined by a Conservative councillor backin the 1980s, can still lead to the ideathat Sheffield just does not care aboutbusiness and entrepreurship.

Statistics tell a different tale, however, with latest figures from StartUp Britainnaming Sheffield as seventh in a table ofthe best UK towns and cities to start abusiness. We look at some of thereasons why Sheffield is a great place tobe your own boss.

Also in this issue we talk to Professor

    Trigger point

For the majority of pension savers, this is the time when theyre contributing the most to their pension. A reduction in their annual allowance at what is often the optimum point in their earnings potential could thwart efforts to build the pension pot needed to last them through later life, Price explains.

    Safe passage

    T

In this liberated world for pensions, people have been given much better access to their money but, as Price stresses, Its vital that people seek advice to avoid stumbling into the unseen traps.

  • Sheffield and its wider region isntconsidered to be the most businessfriendly of locations thanks to aninfamous remark made in the 1980s byIrvine Patnick, then a conservativemember of the South Yorkshire CountyCouncil.

When the lone Tory coined the phaseSocialist Republic of South Yorkshire hewas remonstrating against ruling leftwing politicians of the day, whose radicalpolicies were considered to be draggingthe region into the mire.

How mud sticks. Its 30 years seenMargaret Thatcher abolished the countycouncil, yet many outsiders and thosewithin still believe Sheffield just doesnot care about business andentrepreneurship.

Statistics paint a very different picture, however.

Latest figures from StartUp Britain, thegovernment-backed national campaignfor entrepreneurs led by entrepreneurs, ranks Sheffield seventh in a table of thebest UK towns and cities to start abusiness.

It found that 8,052 new businesses werecreated in Sheffield in 2014 comparedwith 6,551 start-ups the year before.Leeds trailed 12th in the list.

It is clear that starting a business hasbecome more popular in recent yearsfor a number reasons.

Some put it down to the ease of homeworking and even TV programmes suchas Dragons Den that have made theconcept of entrepreneurship trendy.

Starting a business is easier, quicker and

cheaper than ever thanks to newtechnology, said Luke Johnson, thechairman of the Centre forEntrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs have higher profiles thanin the past and are seen as role models.Traditional jobs for life have largelydisappeared, as have occupationalpensions.

Sheffield also has a reputation and datato support it that many graduatesremain in the city after their time at thetwo universities because they fall in lovewith its quality of life. Many of these arethe bedrock of the new spirit ofentrepreneurism that has breathed newlife into the citys multi-faceted economy.

Yet anybody who has started a business, and many who seek to grow in the earlyyears, soon realise they need expertbusiness support to make a success oftheir ventures.

There is plenty of such support availablein the Sheffield region and it is thisassistance that has proved pivotal ingrowing the numbers of new businesses.

The first point of call for many people isBusiness Sheffield, the support agencyrun by the city council backedorganisation, Creative Sheffield. It hassurvived budget issues to continue togive free support to those looking tostart a business, become self-employedor expand, offering sound advice, honestappraisals and invaluable assistance onthe formulation of business plans, pricing, accountancy and tax issues.

Weekly drop-in days informationsessions that are helpful for ironing outlittle niggles are at hand along with

more personal one-to-one meetingswith a business coach.

If you are a successful business personreading this, you could play your part incontinuing Sheffields economic revival byoffering your services to BusinessSheffield as a role model by giving a talkon your own experience of setting upyour business.

Established businesses looking to growcan make use of the off-shoot, theEnterprise Programme, that providestailored support, including professional,IT and technical advice, sales andmarketing guidance, business mentoringand access to potential non-executivedirectors.

Larger companies, including thoseinward-bound, can draw on BusinessSheffields database of commercialproperty for those looking forworkspace or offices.

What really sets the city and its widerregion apart in terms of its support forbusinesses are the two universities.

Both the University of Sheffield andHallam University are serious players inbusiness creation and their combinedexpertise is mind-blowing.

Sheffield University Management School, once more a main event sponsor for thisyears MADE: Entrepreneur Festival thismonth, is the main link between theuniversity and the business community. The support it can provide can make areal difference to a companysperformance.

Where else could a business source anacademic who can apply their researchto a companys development

  • First For Business OCTOBER 2015 DREAM TEAM

    www.ffb-online.co.uk

ROB MOORERECOVERY EXPERT ANDPARTNER AT TAYLOR &EMMETTI see that you are considering purchasing aprofitable existing business although youdo not state what that business is.Nevertheless, if you are going to appoint amanager, getting the right person is critical.Your manager will not only supervise youremployees but will also have to makeimportant decisions that will directly affectthe future profitability of the business.

There are certain qualities which anymanager must have. First and foremost, your manager must understand theimportance of appreciating and respectingyour employees. If your employees aredemonstrably appreciated this will boosttheir morale and lead to betterperformance, which will, of course, maintain and increase the profitability ofyour new business.

Your manager must understand thebusiness and be in a position to providethe employees with the resources theyneed to do their jobs. It can be extremelydemotivating for employees if they areasked to carry out tasks and meet goalswithout receiving the proper support andresources. Consequently, your managermust be able to properly train youremployees how to use the latesttechnology, how to work in teams andprovide them with the skills andknowledge needed to grow the business.

Another crucial quality your manager willneed is the knowledge to competeeffectively. You will need to be satisfiedthat your manager is aware of all thecurrent issues affecting your business and

be able to react appropriately to ensureyour it remains competitive in the face ofchanges to legislation, technology orcustomers.

Your manager must be a good listener. It isessential that he spends time listening tothe employees. This should make youremployees feel that their opinion is valuedand good ideas can be implemented orproblems headed off.

Your manager must know how to developyour staff by focusing on their strengths. The manager must also be good atdelegating tasks. Being able to delegatenot only make a more efficient andeffective manager, but it also creates amore productive team.

Finally, your manager must be a goodleader and must have the ability to direct, motivate and lead your employees.

KEVIN KERLEYCHAIRMAN, ACADEMY OFCHIEF EXECUTIVESI own a business that I do not run and Ican empathise with your situation. Thoughyou do not hint at the size of the business

or its sector, I am assuming that it is of asignificant enough size to pay an MD.

When looking to recruit a manager, Ibelieve that you should first look at therequired outcomes, and what successwould look like for the business five yearsdown the road. What core values arerequired? What behaviours are youlooking for from the successful applicant?

You would then need to look at the skillsets of the team and consider whetherthere is a skills gap that you would needthe new manager to bridge. For instance,is there a business development manager,or will the MD need to carry out this roleand, therefore, need sales experience? Thequalities and experience required by theperson you are looking for will differ frombusiness to business dependent on its size, market sector, number of employees, management structure and ambitions ofthe shareholders for growth.

If I were in your shoes, having decided onthe behaviours that I was looking for, Iwould then employ the use ofpsychometric testing (I like to use TheColour Works, but there are many otherprogrammes available to use) as part ofthe recruitment process.

Finally, the most important factor for mewould be the chemistry between yourselfand the new manager. How trustworthydo they seem and how authentic arethey? You need complete peace of mindand trust in the individual if you are notgoing to be involved in the day-to-dayrunning of the business, formalising adashboard that will give you the KPI`s andensuring that these are reportedaccurately to you consistently. This willallow you to keep a close eye on theperformance of the business from afar.

OUR DREAM TEAM ADVISES ON RECRUITING A MANAGER TO RUN YOUR BUSINESS.

    Rob MooreKevin Kerley

DEAR DREAM TEAM:I would like to purchase an existingbusiness that is already generating aprofit. However, I do not want tomanage it as I have othercommitments in my current job. Whatqualities and experience should I belooking for in a manager if I do gothrough with the buy?

Nigel will be hosting MADE 2015 on 22October.

KNOW AND CARE ABOUT THECONCERNS OF YOUR EMPLOYEES Do they feel appreciated and listenedto? Take the time to talk to them anddiscuss their priorities and desires.Frequent informal conversations will helpyou know more about them asindividuals and enable you to betterunderstand what really motivates eachof your employees.

DEVELOP AND COMMUNICATEA COMPELLING ORGANISATIONALVISION People become motivated if they areexcited about the purpose and goals ofthe organisation and how they cancontribute towards achieving them. Ifyou communicate a clear vision withpassion and enthusiasm you will rally thetroops. Each employee needs tounderstand how their own work

contributes towards the companyachieving its goals.

ADDRESS INEFFECTIVETEAMWORK Working as part of an effective team canlead to impressive improvements inmorale and motivation. Unfortunatelythe converse is also true. Even the mostself-motivated individual cannot maintainenthusiasm if they are part of adysfunctional team that is not playingnice in the sand pit.

BE A ROLE MODEL FOR YOURORGANISATIONThe attitude and behaviour of the leadersets the tone for the whole organisation.Your employees are constantly watchingyou and will take your lead if you areenthusiastic. At times this may mean thatyou need to pump yourself up, or usethe services of a colleague or coach tokeep you motivated and focused.

COMMUNICATE WITHEVERYONE RESPECTFULLY Treating people with respect is at theheart of building business relationships.Give people the freedom to bethemselves and choose how to achievethe agreed upon results.

PROVIDE EMPLOYEES WITHTHE OPPORTUNITY TO BE CREATIVEPeople will feel more motivated if theywork in an environment where they arechallenged and still have the opportunityto innovate. Give people freedom tomake decisions. Encourage collaborativeproblem solving. Develop strong skills indelegation. Solicit their opinion andfeedback on the issues and challengesyou cannot delegate entirely to them.

INVEST IN DEVELOPINGEMPLOYEESDemonstrate that you care about your

employees success by providingopportunities for them to growprofessionally. Recommend books andarticles that are useful resources. Providean adequate training budget andencourage its use. Recommend thesupport of a business coach or mentor.Allow employees to spend some time onprojects that they care about...even if theyare outside their standard responsibilities.

REGULARLY RECOGNISE ANDREWARD EFFORT AND RESULTS Look for opportunities to acknowledgeand celebrate successes...even the smallones. Be specific in your praise so that theyknow what behaviour has contributed tothe overall success of the organisation.

ENSURE COMPENSATION ANDOTHER REWARDS AND BENEFITSARE FAIRThere are a number of extrinsic rewardsthat have a short-term impact onmotivation. Salary increases, companystock options, bonuses, vacation days orupgrades to the work environment willbe appreciated by your employees. However all of these basic motivationaltools can become de-motivators if theyare not used fairly. Employees willcompare their compensation packageswith others, and will becomediscouraged if they perceive inequities.

ENSURE THAT THE RIGHTPERSON IS DOING THE RIGHTTASK AND FULLY UNDERSTANDSTHEIR ROLEThis is perhaps one of the most oftenoverlooked areas of motivation becauseit requires us to step back from the dayto day and take a more holistic andstrategic view of the business. Gettingthe right people in the right role andthen ensuring that their responsibilitiesand expectations are clear is a criticalfoundation for success.

The programme is devised in such a waythat it is appealing to everyone inbusiness; there is something for start-ups,something for scale-ups and somethingfor the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

MADE always features an excellent line-up of speakers, but as well as this thereis a very strong fringe event, with a great

deal of activity taking place outside ofthe main conference on 22 October.Ihave been involved with MADE for thelast five years helping to develop thisfringe, putting some great events on thatdo not clash with the main speakerprogramme.

Last year, we put on a successful businessgrowth event with Barclays, chaired andfacilitated by Jamie Veitch. This year wewill, once again, run a business growthevent which this time will take the formof three TED talks, covering leadership, digital marketing and scaling up.

The leadership talk will be given by TobyBassford, who is currently helping to setup the UK operation of Giant

Worldwide, a transformationalleadership company based in the USA.The digital marketing talk will bedelivered by local entrepreneur DanBrookman who has been in businessfrom the age of about 17 and now runsdigital marketing company Airship. Wealso have a great speaker yet to beofficially announced for the talk onscaling up.

WHY SCALING UP IS SOIMPORTANTA bit of a buzz term at the moment,scale-ups are effectively establishedbusinesses that have the potential togrow significantly.

IN THE FIVE YEARS SINCE ITS INCEPTION MADE: THEENTREPRENEUR FESTIVAL, HAS EDUCATED AND INSPIRED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF BUSINESS OWNERS AND BUDDINGENTREPRENEURS. HERE, WOSSKOW BROWN FOUNDATIONSPROGRAMME DIRECTOR JIM LAWSON EXPLAINS WHYATTENDING THE EVENT IS A MUST FOR ANY LOCAL BUSINESSOWNER OR ENTREPRENEUR.

  • Sherry Coutus 2014 scale-up report onUK economic growth presented evidencethat the majority of net employmentgrowth comes from a relatively smallnumber of highly productive, fast growingfirms. Coutu identified scale-ups asbusinesses with at least 10 employeeswhich have the ability to grow by 20 percent year on year for three years. The realkey to ensuring these businesses grow asquickly and successfully as possible isproviding adequate wrap-around support.

According to Coutu, scale-up leadersneed four main areas of support: accessto private finance, access to flexible rentarrangements, super-fast broadband andaccess to like-minded entrepreneurs.MADE certainly delivers access to otherentrepreneurs and access to finance.

ITS LIKE GLASTONBURYFOR BUSINESSThis is what someone said about aprevious MADE event; and it makes somuch sense. There is a great buzz to it,people come from all over to go to it andit gets busier every year.

It is all about maximising new connectionsand building relationships over that week.If you come to MADE you are going tomeet so many people who you wouldntusually get a chance to meet, many ofwhom are on the same journey as you.You will also meet professionals who canhelp you grow your business, such as IPattorneys, lawyers, accountants andsupport organisations.

Going back to scale-ups, these businessesneed leaders with the ability andwillingness to invest in their ownleadership skills. Typically, these areentrepreneurs who go out and invest intheir own skills then use these skills tobuild their management team. Knowingwhere to start can often be the hardeststep; and MADE can prove an idealstarting point. With all kinds of businesssupport under one roof as well as aprogramme of fringe activity involvinguseful workshops, now could be the timeto begin your scaling up journey.

AVOID THAT MORNINGAFTER FEELINGWeve all been there. Attended a businessevent, listened eagerly to the speakers, jotted down notes, gone away feelinginspired then turned up to the office

the next day only to be immediatelygreeted with tons of queries and abacklog of work to catch up on from aday or two away from your desk.

Here are my top tips to get the most outof MADE and return to your office readyand able to take action.

DelegateThis starts before you leave the office.Where possible arrange for someone elseto deal with straightforward queries inyour absence so you dont have a pile ofsimple but time-consuming jobs to attendto when you arrive back.

PlanLook at the schedule in advance and bookyourself on to as many workshops as yourschedule permits. There is a big push onexporting this year so if you think there ispotential to sell your products outside ofthis country then make sure you sign upand take advantage of the free advice.

Network. Its an obvious one but do it as much aspossible. A real value contact can bepriceless. You might not need them rightnow but you could do in the future.

Collect cards.Again, it may sound obvious but makesure you take a business card fromeveryone you chat to; even if it is justsomeone you make small talk with.

Everyone at MADE is involved in doingbusiness and wants to do business.

Connect.Once you get back to the office or evenon the train on your way home makesure you connect with the people youhave met. Drop them an invitation onLinkedIn or send them a quick emailletting them know it was good to meetthem. Never forget the old adage of itsnot what you know but who you know. Its not always the case but it never hurtsto have plenty of contacts.

LOOKING FORWARDFinally, Id like to point out that this yearthe Wosskow Brown Foundation launched at the beginning of 2015 byWosskow Brown to provide practical help, inspiration and opportunities for peopleto reach their ambitions is offering toact as a clearing house for anyone whovisits MADE and loses a connection or isstruggling to find a way to take somethingforward.

As a foundation we have hundreds ofconnections in business, charity, socialenterprise and sport. So whether you arebased within the region or have visitedfrom outside, were more than happy tobe contacted by people who wish toconnect with an individual or organisationin this area and help further strengthenbusiness activity within the region andbeyond.

  • From caf spaces to non-food stalls,a range of discounted space iscurrently available to localbusinesses wanting to trade in the citycentre. Weekly visitors to the MoorMarket have increased from 54,000 to56,000 in last 13 weeks and the range ofpop-up shops is proving popular withlocal businesses wanting a city centrebase to trade from.

The new pop-up shops offer businessesa creative way of showcasing their waresto city centre shoppers in a simple butcost effective way. There are five kitschmarket barrows available to rent at 25a day to new or existing stallholderslooking to pitch up in the market foyer.

Matt Cockayne, of Goo-Design, whorecently rented a barrow said: I came tothe Moor Market to launch my marketexhibition so it was a brilliantopportunity to bring along a host of my prints, t-shirts, mugs and phonecovers to showcase to shoppers at thesame time.

I do the majority of my business onlineso it was really nice to get out and showwhat I do to people first hand.

The barrows are eye-catching andinteresting for customers. Id definitelyrent one again and would encourageother businesses to have a go too. Its areally cheap alternative to having a stallor shop premises and for getting yourbusiness known to a different audience.

The Moor Market is also currentlyoffering reduced rents on stalls. Weeklyrent savings include:

    Caf 280 230

    Double butchers 368 282

    Food stall 135 106

    Non-food stall 127 100

Richard Eyre, Head of City CentreManagement and Events at Sheffield CityCouncil, said: We know that new

businesses and artisan traders who arelooking for an outlet to sell theirproducts cant always afford to rent astall or open their own shop so the pop-up shop is a great way for them to testthe market and to raise their profile.

We ran an exciting schedule of summerevents and are also planning our autumnpromotions and Christmas events. This isan exciting time of year for potentialtraders to join us at our busiest time ofyear.

Weve already got a wide selection ofstalls at the market but wed love to seeeven more independent, artisan tradersand pop-up businesses renting ourbarrows or joining us on a permanentbasis. We hope that the recent rentreduction will support local businesseslooking for a cost effective trading optionwith the chance to get their business infront of 56,000 customers a week.

  • After the overwhelming success ofthe first three events, thecountdown is on to the fourthSheffEX festival, tipped to be bigger andbetter than ever before.

Helping to ensure SheffEX is the onlyplace to be on Monday 7 December, former sports minister Richard Cabornwill be giving a speech to delegates.

Currently one of the most talked aboutindividuals in the Sheffield city region, MrCaborn is heavily involved in some of thecitys most ambitious projects, includingthe Olympic Legacy Park, City Centre2050 and Factory 2050, the first buildingon a new advanced manufacturing parkon the site of the former SheffieldAirport. Of course, it was Mr Cabornwho also secured 6m of Governmentfunding 15 years ago for the original andphenomenally successful AdvancedManufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).

Tony Carroll, who organises SheffEXalong with brothers Mark and AndyMcCormick, said: We are delighted thatSheffEX has firmly made its mark and

One of the key aims of SheffEXis to give local companies a platform toshout about how great they are at whatthey do and how fabulous a city Sheffieldis. Mr Caborn has achieved someincredible things for the city and is theperfect individual to help highlight someof the excellent activities going on withinthe business community, not only inSheffield but across the city region.

Sponsored by Business Sheffield, the ideafor SheffEX came about out of frustrationthat as a city Sheffield does not doenough to promote itself.

The first event took place in June 2014and proved such a success that a secondevent was soon planned for December ofthe same year. The third SheffEX tookplace in June of this year and on the daybusinesses were already signing up tosecure their place for this December.

    Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and

Industry, HR Media, Fortay Media,One2Call, Leo Wealth Management, HartShaw, The Childrens Hospital Charity,Wosskow Brown, Evoluted, The Met Club,Parcelhub, Franks & Co, Connect Gazellesand Identity Merchandise are just some ofthe confirmed exhibitors for theupcoming event.

  • GOOGLE ADWORDS WONTWORK FOR MY BUSINESSIt almost certainly will. Theres nobusiness in the world which doesntbenefit from being seen by morecustomers. Whether your business isonline or offline, a well-managedAdWords account is guaranteed tolead to more calls, enquiries, emailsand sales.

WEVE TRIED IT ALREADYAND WE DIDNT GET ANYRESULTSIt is very easy to dip a toe into theworld of AdWords. However it is veryunlikely the basic settings will beoptimal, resulting in a low QualityScore which has a dramatic effect onhow much you pay-per-click, andtherefore on the effectiveness of youraccount.

I DONT CLICK ONADWORDS ADS SO MYCUSTOMERS WONT EITHER.Its true that some customersdeliberately avoid clicking on ads. However, around 15 to 20 per cent ofall searches result in a customer clickingan ad. And theres no cost involvedwhen a searcher does not click the ad.

I DONT HAVE THE BUDGETFOR ADWORDSMany of your competitors will beassuming the same thing. In truth,

AdWords accounts regularly return tentimes the amount spent on ads. Thereare very few marketing endeavours youcan engage in where return oninvestment can be so clearlyinterpreted. Not convinced? TryAdWords for one month well eventhrow in up to 120 of free vouchers.

ONLINE MARKETING First for Business OCTOBER 2015

    www.ffb-online.co.uk

It is 2015 and search engine marketinghas changed forever as a result ofGoogles vastly improved ability toserve highly relevant and spam freesearch results.

Just three to four years ago, searcherswere commonly forced to wade throughpages and pages of spam, created bysneaky SEOs or even hackers, to get tothe websites they wanted. The realwinners during the wild west era of theinternet were often the cowboys thosewho were willing to try to cheat Googlesrankings system to get on to page one.

Now, savvy search engine marketers willtell you those tactics could get yourwebsite banned from Google and dolong-term damage to your business.Unfortunately, a by-product of thechanges is that it is harder for firms tochallenge big brands who often dominateGoogles page one.

And while legitimate SEO techniques stillplay an important role in onlinemarketing strategies, its now pay-per-clickadvertising which often represents themost cost effective way of reaching yourcustomers online.

AdWords is Googles version of pay-per-click advertising, and its almostguaranteed that some of yourcompetitors are using this platform toreach your customers.

As an approved Google Partner agency, were very keen to dispel some commonmyths about using the AdWordsprogramme.

Aworld-leading expert on lowcarbon supply chains, ProfessorLenny Koh will join OliverCoppard (Sheffield City Region LEP) andTeresa Hitchcock (DLA Piper) as co-chairof the LEPs low carbon sector group forthe next 12 months.

The group will also be rebranded tobecome the Sustainability Partnership forBusiness, Innovation and Skills Group.

Representing the education sector, Lenny, from the University of Sheffields Facultyof Social Sciences Management School, will engage with the regions businesses tounderstand what industry needs to moveforward.

Renowned internationally for herexpertise in low carbon supply chains, resource efficiency and sustainability, Lennyis director of the Advanced ResourceEfficiency Centre (AREC) from theUniversity of Sheffield and recentlypublished an award-winning paper onrecycling waste electrical and electronicequipment.

The paper found that recycling electronicwaste was equal to 2.15 billion euros inoverall potential revenue to the Europeanmarket in 2014 which could rise to 3.67billion euros by 2020. As well as providinga significant source of revenue, moreeffective recovery of materials couldbenefit the environment by reducing

    manufacturers reliance on unprocessedresources.

Lenny published the paper along withcolleagues Federica Cucciella, IdianoDAdomo and Paolo Rosa from theUniversity of LAquila and Politecnico diMilano. The research has since beenrecognised by academic publisher Elsevierwith the prestigious Atlas Award. Theaward recognises scientific research thathas an impact on people around theworld and is selected by an advisoryboard based on suggestions from thepublishers of Elseviers 1,800 journals eachmonth.

Lenny said: What we have found in thepaper is useful across a range of industriesand sectors and will potentially informsociety, policy and regulatory makingbodies such as the EU for theimplementation of regulations and laws interms of recycling so we can recoverwaste and turn that into useful resources. As we have discovered from this paperthere are so many useful materials thatare being thrown away in landfill yetrecovery of these materials can give thema second life so we can all reduce ourreliance on virgin materials.

We are hoping there will be a lot of

businesses in this region that benefit fromthe paper in terms of the recovery andrecycling of materials, particularly those inthe aviation, telecoms, automotive andenergy sectors; however other types ofbusinesses will also indirectly benefit.

By increasing awareness we aim for theSheffield city region to become a hub forsustainability.

Lenny is hopeful that taking up theposition of co-chair on the SustainabilityPartnership for Business, Innovation andSkills Group will help raise the profile ofthe sustainability agenda.
