It all adds up to a picture of SheffieldCity Region as forward-thinking andoutward-looking a far cry from theinsular, parochial view that may oncehave been regarded as typical of thispart of the world. This month in First ForBusiness, consultant editor Andy Wapleand chief feature writer Julie Farmer takea close look at the various ways we arebroadening our business horizons.

We look at new links between Sheffieldand South Korea, and how they mightopen up potential new businessopportunities thanks to a partnershipthat has the potential to benefit both theSouth Koreans and our regionaleconomy.

Wosskow Brown wanted to find a long-term way of providing support and, aftera great deal of discussion and planning, established the Foundation to do justthat. Our vision was, and still is, Toprovide practical help, inspiration andopportunities for people to reach theirambitions.

We launched with our inauguralprogramme, the WB100. The goal was tosupport 100 businesses, 100charities/social enterprises and 100sports clubs over the next five years. Wealso aimed to help create 100 new jobs.

One year on we have already supportedin the region of 50 beneficiaries; a mix ofbusinesses, charities, social enterprisesand sports clubs.

We have held group sessions andmentoring, put on workshops andspeakers and provided support innumerous areas of business, such aswriting business plans and obtainingfinance.

In this first year the Foundation has beenextremely well received. Former sportsminister Richard Caborn, who is thedriving force behind the Olympic LegacyPark and the Advanced WellbeingResearch Centre, remains president ofthe Foundation.

As we look ahead to the next 12months we have some excitingopportunities for both potentialbeneficiaries and supporters of theFoundation.

We are currently looking for our secondcohort of beneficiaries to whom we canlend our support. • Pura Panela distributes panela, a 100per cent natural alternative tosugar, within the UK. Claimed to have more vitamins andminerals than white sugar, panela isColombias second biggest industry aftercoffee.

Natalia Welch, 29, grew up in Colombiausing the product, which is produced byan ancient process which extracts juicefrom sugar cane then boils it over fivehours to create a concentrated paste, preserving its vitamin, mineral andantioxidant content.

Natalia came to the UK in April 2010 tostudy English and criminology at theUniversity of Sheffield, but it wasnt untila chance visit to the Eden Project inCornwall in 2012, where there was amini Colombian rainforest completewith panela, that she struck upon theidea of starting a business.

Lots of people wanted to buy thepanela, but there was no stock, she said.I spotted an opportunity to import it.

Natalia started selling the product under her Pura Panela brand atfarmers markets and through local shopsand restaurants. She received help fromSheffield University and council-runsupport service Business Sheffield andsoon found herself and her businessgaining recognition.

Natalia won the award for Best BusinessIdea at the University of Sheffields

annual enterprise awards, wasnominated for the BQ EmergingEntrepreneur Award and Pura Panelawas featured in The Guardian as a Start-up of the Year in 2014.

In 2015 Natalia heard about theWosskow Brown Foundation andapproached Wosskow Brown partnerIan Brown with a sample of the product.

Initially I was looking for connectionswith sports people as panela is used as anatural energiser in Colombia, she said. However, the Foundation has proved tobe so much more than a network for mybusiness; it really engages with my ideasand genuinely wants to help me achievemy goals. The mentors have alwaysoffered very professional, well-targetedsuggestions and advice which I havefound invaluable.

Natalia has accessed a variety of supportthrough the Foundation includingbusiness sessions, legal advice and one-to-one meetings to work on particularissues she has faced.

NEW HORIZONSTAKING THE LEAP INTO EXPORTING TO NEW MARKETS ABROAD IS A BIG STEP BUT THERE IS A WEALTH OF HELP AVAILABLE, AS OUR DREAM TEAM EXPLAINS.

ROB MOORE,RECOVERY EXPERT ANDPARTNER AT TAYLOR & EMMETTStarting an international business can beeasy or difficult, depending on what type ofbusiness you intend to engage in andwhich countries you intend to do businesswith. You will need to establish a homeoffice, and in most cases you will need toestablish an overseas corporate subsidiaryor opening an offshore representativeoffice. The basic framework for establishingan international company is more or lessthe same for any business but things youshould take into account include:

Political climate and property rightsSome countries have a record ofconfiscating property and/or businessesowned by foreigners. You'll probably wantto steer clear of those. Others have solidproperty rights and full access forforeigners. You can find the tradeassociation in your sector viawww.taforum.org.

Many countries will try to limit thequantity of certain goods being exportedfrom their country. Therefore, make sureyou obtain an import licence and takequotas into account. Although the EU

allows unrestricted movement of themajority of goods between its members, you may still need an import licence. Also, make sure you are familiar with taxrequirements. Overseas governmentwebsites provide information on local legalrequirements, tax and duties and you canhire international accounting and legalspecialists to help you reconcile the taxand accounting obligations of youroverseas entities with those of the parentcompany. The increasing globalisation ofmarkets and the opportunities providedby the internet have supported manydecisions to export. However, firstlyinvestigate factors specific to your owncompany and its current circumstancesand also consider more general factors

relating to your industrys position in theinternational marketplace.

You also need to be aware theINCOTERMS (International CommercialTerms) which are an internationallyrecognised set of trade term definitionsdeveloped by the International Chamberof Commerce (ICC). The terms define thetrade contract responsibilities and liabilitiesbetween a buyer and a seller.

Economic situationCountries with low debt-to-GDP ratios, low or declining unemployment, andstrong consumer spending normally makefor good prospects. A growing middle class, low inflation, and rising incomes are alsopositive signs.

Market researchMarket research can help you get a handleon where your goods or services will sell, the different market segments, whetheryou'll have competitors, and how to priceyour product for the market. Fortunately, there are many consultants, governmentagencies, books and free resources on theInternet that can help. Try setting up a trialrun or conducting surveys before investingvery much capital. Don't overlook howmuch you'll have to pay employees, norwhat work habits are like in the country.

Also when taking a product to a globalmarket you will need to consider changes

DEAR DREAM TEAM:I think that my companysproduct would be successful inother countries, but Im notsure how to get started ininternational business. Id liketo seek advice from as manydifferent sources. What advicewould you offer and arethere any particularorganizations that I shouldapproach?

to the packaging and brandingrequirements along with any trademark ordomain issues.

Language barriersIf your business will cater to otherforeigners, this might not be much of anissue. However, being able to easilyconverse with the local population willmake launching your venture much morestraightforward. Hiring a translator can becostly so consider taking on a bilingualemployee.

The incorporation processThe International Finance Corporation andthe World Bank have a great webpage thatcompares the costs, amount of time, andnumber of procedures involved withforming a business in 183 countriesaround the world. The page is specificallyfor businesses with between 10 and 50employees, but can be helpful for thoselooking into both smaller and largeroperations.

Finally some really useful sources ofinformation include: Trade & Investment(UKTI), the British Chambers ofCommerce, and the British InternationalFreight Association

    Good luck!

ADELE DETHICK, HEAD OFCORPORATE COMMERCIAL AT WOSSKOW BROWNDoing business internationally is notdifficult but it requires a certain degree ofpreparation.

The first thing to consider is whether yourproduct is really going to be successful inyour target location. Its easy for anyone topronounce their product as sought afterbut to ensure success within your targetmarket, it is always wise to spend sometime considering the competition, thetarget customer profile and spendinghabits, and to ensure legal compliance inthat particular country.

Organisations such as the South YorkshireInternational Trade Centre can run specificproduct market surveys in many countries.

Once youve identified your targetcustomer and country, ensure that youhave the proper support to help youexport. There are customs and insuranceforms which need to be prepared, andthen there is the thorny issue of gettingpaid when the product may take weeks toarrive at its destination after all, you cantjust recall your products from a containership, and yet your customer may not wantto pay you for something which they havenot yet received. With the correctsupport from an export adviser and yourbank, you should be able to effectivelymanage these issues.

Whilst export is essential for internationaltrade, it also puts a strain on a companysturnover. You should ensure that you havecontractual documents in place to governyour relationships with trading and deliverypartners. Wosskow Brown can help youensure that your business is ready forexport and you can contact our Head ofCorporate Commercial, Adele Dethick([email protected]).

We would also recommend a few of ourtrusted advisers such as Kiley Tan([email protected]) of MosaicInternational formerly a partner atWosskow Brown but now specialising ininternational trade and investments in theFar East and Nick Patrick([email protected]) at South YorkshireInternational Trade Centre, who deals withall aspects of international trade, includinga comprehensive export documentationservice and export administration, knownas the HUB for exporters.

  • During recent tough economictimes more and more businessesthan ever were struggling tosurvive and inevitably insolvency figureswere high. The economy is now back onthe up and business owners are feelingmore positive about the future. So is ittime for the business recovery industryto reflect this positive outlook?

Hear the words business recovery andmany people think immediately of termssuch as company insolvency, failure andgone under.

But, in fact, business recoveryprofessionals do much more than workwith companies that have no future. Yes,they are involved in recovering businessesfrom disasters but they also work with

companies to recover debt, to helpobtain justice for fraudsters and to assistwith refinancing, restructuring, mergersand acquisitions in other words, to helpcompanies look to a brighter future.

One of the common misconceptions isthat business recovery experts are onlyrequired when times are bad; but wheneconomic times are good andorganisations are looking to expand, business recovery professionals can offeradvice on everything from executingdeals to raising finance and restructuringmanagement teams.

Since 2013 the number of companyinsolvencies has been on a decreasingtrend. Between April and June of thisyear total company insolvencies in

England and Wales were at the lowestlevel since Q4 2007. This decrease wasmainly driven by a decrease incompulsory liquidations, which fell to thelowest level since Q4 2013.

With these figures in mind, and with thebusiness outlook more positive, could itbe time to move about from the termrecovery? Some companies refer totheir services as business continuanceand this could be a more accuratedescription of the support available.

By conjuring up a limited number ofterms, the offer of business recoverysupport could be off-putting to somebusiness owners. The offer of businesscontinuity services could possibly bemore appealing.

  • Finally, we can breathe a sigh of reliefknowing that the economy ispicking up. Naturally, as confidencegrows, people start to look at ways inwhich they can grow their business. Thisis excellent news, but we must notforget that growth can be a risky time.

Any business whether it is a microbusiness or a plc which embarks ongrowth always faces an element of risk, particularly if heavy borrowing isinvolved to fund that growth.

A lot depends on how the businessgrows and the size and type of business.Whether the business is supplying theconsumer market or the B2B market, if itis diversifying it may be looking atincreasing its product range or targetinga new market. In some instancescompanies may go down another route, such as acquisition; whether it be theacquisition of a competitor, a supplier ora customer.

This can bring its own problems. There

may be synergies in merging businessesbut do you have the right managementstructures and systems in place? And ifthey are in different locations, you canalso have logistical issues to address.

If you grow your own business, are takingon more staff or creating new products, always remember that cash is king. I havepersonally witnessed businesses crackingopen the champagne to celebrate ahuge new deal, but then catastrophicallyfailing when they didnt have the cash tocomplete the contract.

Getting the balance right is crucial. Doyou grow organically and reinvest yourprofits, allowing your business to grow

steadily? Or do you borrow as much asyou can and expand rapidly? This is likelyto depend on individual circumstances.Your company will probably not grow asquickly by playing it safe but if you aimfor a higher return you inevitablyincrease the risks.

So, at Wilson Field, as well as helpinginsolvent businesses we are focusing oursupport towards those that are able tosurvive. We are helping them overcomethe financial blips that most companiesface at one point or another. If we canhelp businesses to survive, this is goodfor us, good for the businesses that aresurviving and, most importantly of all, great for the overall business economy.

  • It was 15 years ago that Cubana burstonto the Sheffield nightlife scene, offering a burst of joyous Havanasunshine on a sleepy back street a shortshimmy away from the city centre.

Looking at all the multiculturalrestaurants, bars and music venues in thecity, it is easy to take the wide variety offood, drink and sounds from around theworld for granted.

But it hasnt always been such a hotbedof diversity, and Cubana was one of thetrailblazers that helped breathe new lifeinto Sheffield. Now the salsa venue iscelebrating a landmark anniversaryand it is as fresh and vibrant as ever.

First unleashed on an unsuspectingpublic in November 2000, Latin music, salsa dancing, mouth-watering tapas foodand colourful cocktails all blended, bringing people together in a fun andfriendly setting.

Now based in Leopold Square, the Latinbeat pulses stronger than ever.

FIRST STEPSCo-ownerAdrian Bagnolifirst got intoLatin musicwhilst visiting a

popular Brazilian nightclub called theMaracan in Florence, Italy. Adrian wasamazed by the lively atmosphere andwas convinced that this was exactly the

kind of night out Sheffield needed.

Back then, the only Latin music peopleknew was The Gipsy Kings and LaBamba, explains Adrian. We decidedthe time was ripe to introduce a bitmore culture to Sheffield.

Adrian and friends Toni Dente and GianBohan started by launching a Viva Salsanight at local nightclub Club Uropa(formerly Isabellas), booking Brazilian DJMarcus Vinicius and a live Brazilian bandcalled Viramundo for the opening night.

An astounding 700 people attended thefirst event in June 1996, makingSheffields first salsa club night anundeniable success.

This really paved the way for us, saysAdrian. Calendar News came to coverit and the atmosphere was incredible. Itgave us lots of confidence and westarted booking touring bands fromCuba and Latin-American bands basedin London and Manchester.

The final Viva Salsa took place in May2000 and it was then that Adrian joinedforces with Brad Charlesworth and KitoMorales to open Cubana on Trippet Lane.

CUBANA MK. I TRIPPET LANE Getting the look of the venue right wasjust as important as creating theauthentic tapas dishes and cocktails, soAdrian employed talented architect andclose friend Paul Brady, to capture a trueLatin vibe.

We offered something different people felt like theyd discoveredsomething great tucked away on thisbackstreet in the city centre, saysAdrian. There wasnt another tapas barin Sheffield at the time.

Wed already built up contacts with theLatino community from the Viva Salsanight, so they were on board as soon asthey discovered wed be offering livemusic.

CUBANA LIVEOne of Cubanas proudest moments washosting a night at Music In The GardensFestival 2010 in the Botanical Gardens.Cubana Live attracted a sell-out crowd ofover 3,500 people and helped raisethousands of pounds for local charities.

The extravaganza offered some of themost popular Latin artists, includingOmar Puente and his band.

The group arrived in chauffeur-driven1957 Chevrolet convertibles and pulledup in front of the stage, before deliveringan amazing performance.

  • CUBANA MK. II LEOPOLD SQUARE After 14 years building up a reputationas the most vibrant independent Cubanbar in Sheffield, it was time to saygoodbye to Trippet Lane.

Adrian discovered thetwo-level venue, formerly Platillos inLeopold Square hadbecome available. Aftera discussion withbusiness partner Brad, they decided the timewas right to move. They enlisted the helpof local artist Paul Staveley and PaulBrady once again to recreate Cubanastrademark style.

Just four days after closing the TrippetLane venue, the new Cubana wasopened.

We opened with a big party onThursday 24 July. Over 400 peopleturned up and it was an incredibleatmosphere, Adrian recalls. We knewright then, from everyones reaction thatit was going to work.

Now offering two floors for twodifferent nights out, diners can enjoy thecosy upstairs area or party downstairs.Cubana turn over around 300 diners ona Saturday night, many of which stay allnight.

Theres great flavoursome food, courtesy of Chilean head chef FabrianCruz who has been in charge of kitchenaffairs since day one, exotic cocktails, friendly customer service, chilled-out livemusic and vibrant music to dance to allunder one roof, says Adrian.

Cubanas Salsa In The Square has alsobeen a huge success. Since Cubana hastaken over hosting the Bank HolidaySunday extravaganza, attendancenumbers have doubled and Cubanalooks forward to offering a live Cubansalsa band, salsa lessons, dance demosand more in May 2016.

So, after 14 years brightening up TrippetLane and a successful first year adding avibrant mix of Cuban flavour to LeopoldSquare, how will Adrian and his team becelebrating their success?

Of course, there willbe a big party, but Bradand I are going over toCuba in January too, says Adrian. Its such agreat place and wellget loads of inspiration.

    Well betreatingthat asour 15thbirthday present.

If youre looking for a lively venue withthe full package, Cubana can provide thedelicious food, the colourful cocktails andthe live entertainment to start yourfestive season.

    DINING OUT

SPECIAL GUESTSOver the years, Cubana have been honoured to welcome many memorableguests. A visit from legendary Cuban band the Buena Vista Social Club in 2007 wascertainly a highlight and Adrian was overwhelmed when the band returned after

their second Sheffield City Hall gig in 2008.

Once at their new premises at Leopold Square, Cubanawas given the ultimate seal of approval when Dr AleidaGuevara, daughter of famous Cuban revolutionary CheGuevara, visited for dinner and posed for a pictureunderneath the portrait of her father.

Other notable guests include Panamanian boxer RobertoDuran, once considered to be the best pound-for-poundfighter of all time, who visited in 2003.

  • Devolution, city centre redevelopment and advancedmanufacturing; all hot topics and all firmly placed onthe SheffEX agenda. Richard Caborn, theformer government minister and

newly appointed Business and Industry Envoy forSheffield, will deliver a keynote speech at the event, which aims to delve deep into the key issues facingbusiness in Sheffield in 2016.

Currently one of the most talked about individuals inthe Sheffield city region, Mr Caborn is heavily involved insome of the citys most ambitious projects, including theOlympic Legacy Park, City Centre 2050 and Factory 2050,the first building on a new advanced manufacturing parkon the site of the former Sheffield Airport. Of course, itwas Mr Caborn who also secured 6million ofGovernment funding 15 years ago for the original andphenomenally successful Advanced ManufacturingResearch Centre (AMRC).

Tony Carroll, who organises SheffEX along withbrothers Mark and Andy McCormick, said: One of the keyaims of SheffEX is to give local companies a platform toshout about how great they are at what they do and howfabulous a city Sheffield is. Mr Caborn has achieved some

incredible things for the city and is the perfect individualto help highlight some of the excellent developmentstaking place within the city region.

For the first time, SheffEX will be taking advantage ofits successful position on the business events calendar todelve into some of the biggest issues facing businesses inthe near future.

Devolution in particular is a hot topic at the momentand who better to discuss the potential impacts than MrCaborn? This Future of Business Conference is definitelyone not to be missed.

Sponsored by Business Sheffield, the idea for SheffEXcame about out of frustration that as a city Sheffield doesnot do enough to promote itself.

The first event took place in June 2014 and proved sucha success that a second event was soon planned forDecember of the same year. The third SheffEX took placein June of this year and on the day businesses werealready signing up to secure their place for this December.

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, HRMedia, Fortay Media, One2Call, Leo Wealth Management,Hart Shaw, The Childrens Hospital Charity, WosskowBrown, Evoluted, The Met Club, Parcelhub, Franks & Co,Connect Gazelles and Identity Merchandise are just someof the confirmed exhibitors for the upcoming event.

As well as the main exhibition and conference SheffEXwill offer exciting networking opportunities and a line-upof influential speakers, to be announced in the lead up tothe event. Business workshops will also be taking placethroughout the day, giving delegates the opportunity tolearn new skills or refresh their knowledge on a range ofuseful topics.

SheffEX takes place at Ponds Forge International SportsCentre from 9.30am to 4pm on Monday 7 December. Entryis free for pre-registered delegates. To register visitwww.sheffex.com.

We are now just weeks away from the eagerly anticipatedfourth SheffEX business event, which for the first time will bededicated to understanding the key issues that will affectbusiness in the city in 2016.

  • Over recent years, Barnsleysreputation has experiencedsomething of a turnaround.Having seemingly worked its way out ofSheffields shadow it is now beingrecognised as somewhat of a hub forbusiness in its own right. And rightly so.

With a great location close to the M1motorway, Barnsley enjoys excellentroad, rail and air links to the rest of theUK and also the world.

The town has ample developmentopportunities and there is no shortageof support available to companieslooking to relocate or expand theirexisting business.

Figures provided by business supportorganisation Enterprising Barnsley showthat the buoyancy of the local economyhas continued through 2015/16, leadingto continued growth of business (8.8 percent) and jobs (3.9 per cent) at a greaterlevel than both regionally (8.4 per centbusiness; 3.1 per cent jobs) and national(7.1 per cent business; 3.2 per cent jobs).

Barnsley also continues to exceed boththe regional and national employmentrate; and has recorded a greater rate ofincrease (2.1 per cent) in 2015/16compared with the national level of 1.9per cent.

Other great news is that new businessesare surviving for longer. Six years ago, in2009, Barnsley was behind the nationaland regional business survival rates now, the town has a higher one, two andfour-year survival rate for businessesestablished in 2012, 2011 and 2009,compared with national and regionalrates.

The Centre for Cities (2015) report alsoreflects positive change and identifiesBarnsley as the best performingcity/town for private sector employmentgrowth. While there was little change inprivate sector employment levelsbetween 2013 and 2014 across the restof the country, Barnsley topped the tablewith 9.5 percent growth.

Barnsley is also ranked ninth for growth inprivate sector jobs over the last ten years.

The towns strong performance ishelping to increase interest among

companies looking to relocate andexpand into the area. During 2015/16Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Councilrecorded a 67 per cent increase inproperty enquiries, helping to secureover 8million of private sectori
