  • City centre regeneration has beentop of the agenda for Sheffieldfor the best part of a decade and sometimes it appears that we areno further forward now than at any timein the last ten years.

Of course, a vibrant city centre is aboutmore than just attracting the samenational shop chains that are prevalentacross the nation. A vibrant student life, new tech start-ups and social enterprisescan all play a part in breathing new lifeinto areas that have become ominouslyquiet of late.

So where do we start? Can localpoliticians and business leaders worktogether to kick-start a new era ofprosperity in the heart of Sheffield? Thismonth in First For Business, consultanteditor John Yates considers the optionsand asks whether the recent yes votefor a Business Improvement District, which supporters say puts the destiny ofthe city centre into the hands of thosewho live, work and play in the citycentre, is a giant step in the rightdirection.

This month we also prepare to welcomeSheffEX to the city. This major event atPonds Forge International on Monday 1June is the place where local businessand industry gets together to make newcontacts, opportunities and deals.

Whether you do business in Barnsley,Bassetlaw, Bolsover, Chesterfield,

Derbyshire Dales, North EastDerbyshire, Rotherham or Sheffield,SheffEX is the place where bright newideas will spark to life. It is free to attendwith a lively choice of activities to fill anentire day with the business exhibition, expert lectures and networking sessions.

The cover of this months First ForBusiness throws the spotlight on localapprentices as they show off their skillsdesigning window displays to exhibit thework of artists, designers and retailers inan innovative scheme backed by TheSource Skills Academy.

Sheffield Showcase is a scheme thatutilises empty shop premises and givesapprentices, usually aged between 16and 18, the opportunity to develop theirvisual merchandising skills. This may beonly a temporary fix when it comes toenhancing the appearance of the citycentre, but the good news is that aftercompleting the course many of theyoungsters go on to pursue careers inretail.

While the battle to create a bettershopping environment is one of theissues that continues to rage in Sheffield, when it comes to commercialdevelopment there is definitely a buzz ofexcitement in the air. • When Jarvis Cocker declares thatit would be a crime todemolish three shops in astreet of little architectural merit andmore than 20,000 people sign an onlinepetition for the preservation of what theSheffield songster called these globaltreasures it is clear that local politicianshave spectacularly misjudged the publicmood on city centre regeneration.

A few weeks earlier, the council had re-announced plans for a New RetailQuarter (actually the Old RetailQuarter formerly known as Sevenstonegiven a new label) with a price tag of

480million. The artists impression ofthe planned quarter Sheffield has noshortage of quarters, but is seriouslyshort on cash reveals a Disneyland-liketower rising into the night sky, withstreet lights forming what looks like ahalo of stardust.

The fantasy quality of the image was notlost on the public who have beentreated to no less than threeannouncements of the same plan sinceJune of last year Who do they thinkthey are kidding? Another WorldStudent Games disaster in the making.Well, I am not holding my breath

were some of the more printablecomments posted online.

So what do these two events tell us? Theformer snooker star Steve interestingDavis, was in no doubt. Moved to anunfamiliar eloquence at the loss of anidiosyncratic, independent record shopand bookstore, he said: Ive been visitingRare & Racy ever since I stumbled uponit back in the nineties. Its such anuplifting place, a real treasure trove ofamazing music, books, magazines andart, Davis said. If this row of shops bitesthe dust a little bit of the character ofSheffield will die.

  • When asked by reporters why thecouncil was knocking the building down,Leigh Bramall said: Our hands are tiedby the stringent planning laws set out bythe government. If we did not followthese laws we would be putting theCouncil under a big risk of being takento an appeal by the developer, whichwould mean that the Council would beoverruled and the development goahead, but with the Council facing hugelegal bills.

Bramall may be in a difficult position. Butthe council has been only too happy totake on developers in the past. Think oftheir misguided opposition to Nextsproposal for a new superstore nearMeadowhall which the planners foughttooth and nail at great financial andreputational cost to the city. Had Bramalland his colleagues chosen to oppose theapplication, the council would have beenseen to be standing up for the little guy,the independents who make Sheffieldspecial and different. The fight would havehighlighted or exposed as false theirclaim that central government was toblame. But Sheffield has a habit of pickingthe wrong fight at the wrong time.

Instead Bramall is seen as promoting aNew Retail Quarter which will be justanother clone of the bland, characterlessHigh Streets that blight the landscape. The point that Steve Davis and othersare making is that Sheffield, as a citycentre, is at its best when it is different. Itneeds a business climate whereindependents like Rare & Racy canflourish, not be killed off.

Sheffield is already strong on retail. It hasthe hugely successful Meadowhall just a

short train ride away from the citycentre. Instead of seeing one of Europesmost successful shopping malls as theenemy which is still the prevalent viewfrom Town Hall, as the Next fiascoillustrated the council should be seeingit for what it is: one of its most valuableretail assets. Rather than trying tocompete with Meadowhall, the councilshould be looking at how to complementand connect with it in a way that makesthe most of the 25 million visitors itattracts to the city every year. The councilshould be trading on Meadowhallssuccess, not trading blows with it.

It is time to stop seeing Meadowhall asan out-of-town mall a kind of dismalparochialism that has damaged Sheffieldlong enough. The more than 10,000international students who have travelledaround the world to live and study inSheffield think nothing of taking the traindown to London to go shopping for aday for them Meadowhall is the citycentre.

And here is a clue. Sheffields successdepends not only on attracting thesestudents, but also on keeping them herewhen they graduate: this will not bedone by building a New Retail Quarter. And, while the early success of RISE acouncil/university collaboration to matchgraduates to local businesses is a stepin the right direction, a more concertedeffort is needed to promote thecharacter and personality of the city in away that will make Sheffield a powerfuland magnetic brand for global graduates.

The recent visit to the city fromBrookings Institution Vice PresidentBruce Katz sparked an immediate

debate about whether Sheffield couldbecome Europes first advancedmanufacturing innovation district. In theflutter of Tweets that followed the visitthere were audible references to Austin,Texas, a city that for decades was littlemore than a sleepy, southern capital.

In the space of just 15 years, however,Austin transformed itself using its greatestnatural resource: the tens of thousands ofyoung, educated people who werestudying at its universities. The spark forthat change came about when an Englishaccountant, Laura Kilcrease, teamed upwith technologist, businessman and deanof the business school, George Kozmetsky. We needed to start our owncompanies, Kilcrease has said.

This dynamic duo along with others inhigher education, the private sector andgovernment began by fostering localtechnology companies that not onlycreated jobs but also a lasting asset:intellectual property. When you buildone job at a time you build a very strongstructure, she said. In contrast, whenyou import 100 jobs, you can easilyexport 1,000 jobs.

The growth of high-tech, fast-growingbusinesses in the heart of Austin alsoallowed a very different kind of retail andsupply chain dynamic to develop: onethat encouraged the development ofsmaller, service based outlets fromboutique coffee bars and takeaways tosuppliers of post-it-notes and scanners.

While no one is suggesting that Sheffieldcan offer the sunshine provided by Texas,it already has the kind of alternative, counter cultural, creative environmentthat made Austin so attractive to brightand ambitious graduates who didnt wantto join the rat race in New York or LosAngeles. It also has a burgeoning digitalinfrastructure that is spawning companieslike Pimoroni who describe themselvesas a Makers and Educators whosePibow was the UKs first Kickstarter.

This idea of Sheffield being a city ofmakers, is gaining traction. The under-the-radar success of Emma Cheshire and LeeStraffords digital accelerator Dotforgehas belatedly been recognised. Over thelast two years they have brought some ofthe most talented and ambitious techiesto Sheffield, put them through their pacesin a startup bootcamp and brought themto the market with the support ofventure capital. >>>

    AGENDA

Castle House the former Co-opbuilding is being billed as a Maker Hub

    7

    006 - 008 FFB May15_Layout 1 23/04/2015 14:19 Page 2

  • Now, with the help of 3.5million fromGeorge Osbornes giveaway Budget,Emma and her team will be moving fromthe beautiful but corporate ElectricWorks to Castle House, a five-storey,partly listed building in Castlegate, toopen what is being billed as a MakerHub a place where the citys tech andcreative types can develop a powerfulcritical mass.

Emmas dream would be for CastleHouse (the old Co-op building) to act asa catalyst for this part of the city tobecome the Shoreditch of Sheffield, aplace where a new tech city is born andwhere new start-ups and socialenterprises spill out to regenerateneighbouring buildings and streets. Shebelieves that, as in Austin and LondonsOld Street, the influx of tech companieswill create a fertile ground for supplychain and retail businesses to take rootand grow.

The importance of Castlegate to the city the market hub of Sheffield until thecouncil foolishly knocked it down andmoved it across town has at least beenrecognised by the councils head ofregeneration, Simon Ogden. But it wasonly last year, when the University ofSheffield used the area as the stage fortheir hugely successful Festival of theMind, that people woke up to thepotential this area has for the rebirth ofSheffield and, by implication, howdamaging it could be if its decline isallowed to continue.

Building on this success, the universitywas instrumental in creating the visionfor Castle House as a Maker Hub andcontinues to work with the council todrive the regeneration of Castlegateitself. With the Sheffield CulturalConsortium as partners, the universityplans a series of high impact events inthe Castlegate area in 2016 as part of ayear-long celebration of Sheffields makerheritage and the role that makers willplay in shaping its future.

This kind of collaboration between anengaged and outward looking university, tech accelerators, grass rootsorganisations and entrepreneurs will domore to transform Sheffield than anynumber of shopping malls.

Although loosely modelled on theprinciples that made Tech City in Londonsuch a success, Emma is keen that thenew hub is both expansive and inclusive

and will include not only commercialcompanies and the accelerator, but alsoa strong civil and community enterpriseelement.

The goal is to bring together a numberof different strands around the idea ofwhat a maker is but we dont want tobe too prescriptive it could behardware it could be software, Emmasaid. The hub will offer a home to amakers lab of the type that wasinstrumental in helping Primoroni buildthe Pibow rainbow case for theRaspberry pi.

Sheffield also has a strong tradition ofsocial activism and we want the hub tosupport and develop that tradition, sheadded. Working with the RSA and theKey Fund she and her team have alreadycreated an accelerator and investmentprogramme for social entrepreneurswho want to harness the power ofdigital technology to realise positivesocial change.

A soon to be published by report by theCIQ Agencys Richard Motley will showthat Sheffield now has a burgeoningnetwork of digital media and makercentres that: offers a social model forsustainable economic developmentthrough hosting experts and like-mindedpeople to grow expertise and workcollaboratively.

Mapping, connecting and supporting thegrowth of these digital networks shouldbe a centerpiece of making Sheffield aninnovation district a vision that has toextend beyond the narrow confines of

the isolated, campus-like AdvancedManufacturing Park which somemembers of the Local EnterprisePartnership seem to think is the core ofthe innovation district.

Take board member Chris Scholey. Herecently suggested that the critical massof activity on the AdvancedManufacturing Park and SheffieldBusiness Park represents a game-changing opportunity to create anInnovation District, an area where R&Dexpertise and industry cluster togethercommercialising new techniques andideas through spin-outs and start-ups.

This is not a vision for an innovationdistrict, but a description of a technologypark. Clinging to an expanding AMP, or acity centre vision that has a fantasy NewRetail Quarter as its crowning glory, willnot transform Sheffield. Thankfully, thecity is no longer relying on the council. Itis taking the future into its own hands. The recent yes vote for the BusinessImprovement District means more thanthe six-figure sum raised by the levy topromote and develop the city centre. For the first time, it puts the destiny ofthe city centre into the hands of thosewho live, work and play in the centre.

What they do next will be key. Austinmarched proudly to the banner of KeepAustin Weird (today it might be KeepAustin Wired). If Sheffield needs a sloganit could do worse than adopt the nameof the book and record store that thecouncil is about to knock down KeepSheffield Rare and Racy.

  • High street giants watch out.professional mystery shoppers rateBolsover as best in the UK

The historic Derbyshire town of Bolsoverhas been rated best in the UK foroutstanding customer service.

In a mystery shopper exercise conductedby retail skills specialist, The Source SkillsAcademy, an unusually high proportion ofthe towns retailers were highlighted asgoing above and beyond to achieveexceptional levels of service.

The Source has been conducting MysteryShopping projects for the last three yearsin town centres, districts and marketsaround the UK.

George Elliott, business communicationsmanager from The Source, commented,We found the warmth and friendlinessof Bolsover retailers to be outstanding.

From a shoppers point of view, this kindof welcome contributes greatly to theoverall customer shopping experience,he said.

Bolsovers mystery shop scores wererevealed at the Bolsover Town JewelAwards ceremony last month, which washeld to celebrate business growth andsuccess in the town.

Castle Card Shop, run by ownerDawn Walker since mid-2014, was named overallwinner in the Awards.

The Bolsover Town JewelAwards come after thetown last year won a750,000 bid for Europeanfunding to brush up Bolsoversimage and boost the local economy, backed by a marketing campaign toincrease visitor footfall.

Im truly passionate about customerservice, added Mr Elliott. Any businessof any size can stand out against thecompetition by prioritising theircustomers, encouraging them to comeback time and time again.

As Bolsover already has the popularattraction of Bolsover Castle, this is a

brilliant opportunity for the town toattract more visitors and local residentsto shop here.

Twelve businesses achieved a score of100 per cent in the Mystery shoppingexercises and one of these was CastleCycles, a specialist retailer tucked away inCavendish Walk in Bolsover.

Following a lifelong love of all thingscycling, Malcolm Smith, 59, fromLincolnshire, chose Bolsover as the placeto pursue his passion. He sold hisconvenience stores last year, beforemaking his own grand depart to the area

with his family to openthe specialist shop lastyear.

Castle Cycles also offers aroute-planning serviceand personal bikecoaching, as well as bikemaintenance and repairs.

Ill always try out a routemyself before providing itto the customer, saidMalcolm. Roads andtracks change quickly

because of weather conditions and otherthings and people often dont have thetime to plan routes themselves.

Malcolm is a qualified Bikeability coach, teaching cycling skills to school children aswell as adults.

The business is booming, with the shopbrimming with bikes waiting to berepaired. Malcolm has plans to expandand open a larger retail premises; hisrecent achievement in the mysteryshopping exercise is surely further proofof his commitment to his customers andtheir shopping experience.

    HOWS MYDRIVING?

    12

    012 - 013 FFB May15_Layout 1 23/04/2015 11:38 Page 1

  • The last time I had a driving instructorsat beside me in a car I was 17, so Icouldnt help but feel slightly nervouswhen I was invited to try out the freeEco-Business Driving course being offeredto businesses in South Yorkshire through ateam of qualified instructors.

My instructor for the day, AndyMcPherson, was keen to point out straightaway that the course was in no way a test;although I remembered to demonstratemirror, signal, manoeuvre just in case.

We drove to a local retail park where Iwas asked to park the vehicle, a FiatPunto. After setting the trip counter Andydirected me on a short journey, beforeannouncing that my average fuelconsumption was 40.1mpg and that Idmade 22 gear changes along the way.

We proceeded to drive around Sheffieldfor approximately one hour while Andyquestioned me on my eco-safe drivingknowledge and offered tips on reducingfuel consumption. At this point I did havea confession that Ive written quiteextensively about driving and have evenworked with a national road safety charityin the past.

Because of this I already knew aboutplanning ahead, reducing the vehicles load and the importance of driving at asafe speed.

Even so, I discovered I wasnt necessarilypracticing what I preached. Andy showedme how and where I could makeblock gear changes to further improvefuel efficiency and how to better drive tosuit the road conditions.

He explained how, over the years, enginetechnology and the performance of carshas improved dramatically but thatmany drivers havent adapted their drivingstyle accordingly.

For years Ive more often than not movedup gears one at a time. The trainingsession prompted me to try changing uptwo or even three gears whereappropriate to cut down fuelconsumption and, ultimately, save money.

Ive been driving for almost 18 years andin that time it seems things have changedconsiderably in terms of the most fuel-efficient methods of driving. I can onlyimagine how much theyve changed forpeople who have been driving 30 or 40years. The problem is that the moreexperienced a driver the less theyprobably feel they have to learn and this ispotentially a challenge for Inmotion! in

encouraging people to sign up for thescheme.

Yet for the businesses which do sign upthe benefits could be significant. Thescheme is free of charge the onlycommitment a company has to give isthree hours of its drivers time. In returnbusiness owners can expect financialsavings (this will vary depending on thesize of the company and fleet), in additionto having the confidence that they aredoing all they can to improve the safety ofemployees and protect their business.

At the end of my session, Andy directedme back to the retail park so I could makethe same journey that I had previously.

Despite my average fuel consumptionstaying the same, I made eight fewer gearchanges along the way. This was on ashort journey of around five minutes. Icould expect, therefore, to make around100 fewer gear changes on an hour-longjourney, which would no doubt lead tosignificantly lower fuel consumption. Not abad outcome considering Im no noviceand was already using my prior knowledgeto drive as economically as possible.

Multiply the results over a month or ayear and you see how making a few minor changes to driving style can have a large impact. For a company with several drivers, the benefits would beeven greater.

In fact, Amey, who are delivering theStreets Ahead programme on behalf ofSheffield City Council, put 65 employeesthrough the scheme and are seeingsignificant savings. Graeme Symonds,Account Director, said: The schemeallows us to train and educate ouremployees to ensure they are driving in afuel efficient and effective way. Wereactually seeing somewhere between a 10 and 15 per cent reduction in fuel usage and we are reducing ourcarbon footprint.

  • ROB MOORERECOVERY EXPERT AND PARTNER ATTAYLOR & EMMETTI am pleased to see that your business isdoing well. However, you are right to becautious. Unfortunately a lot of smallbusinesses dont survive beyond fiveyears. Although things may changefollowing the general election, at thismoment in time the most significantbarriers faced by SMEs include acomplicated tax system, lack of banklending, late payments or cash flow andtoo much bureaucracy.

Before you take positive steps to expandyour business you should ensure thatyou have the support of your bank. Youshould prepare a detailed business planwhich takes into account the increasedoverheads you will incur through movinginto larger premises, taking on more staffetc. You need to be satisfied that you areable to maintain a healthy cash flow tomeet the additional costs you will incurin running your business.

The Federation of Small Business or theConfederation of British Industry canprovide general advice on how to growyour business. You should, however, take

specialist advice before you take onadditional staff. In particular you shouldtake advice from a lawyer to ensure thatyour employment contracts, policies andprocedures are legally compliant andprotect your business from the risks ofconstantly changing employment law.

Managing your own changing role isdifficult. There are various factors thathave an impact on your ability tomanage and lead the business. Theseinclude your individual ability to lead andmanage an expanding business includingan expanding work force and the sizeand structure of your business.

You are clearly an entrepreneur in thatyou are building a successful business. However, running an expanding businessrequires a different set of skills includingcommercial nous and, most importantly, skills of managing and developing otheremployees who have not been soclosely associated with the business fromits beginning.

As your business grows and matures, you may find that you need to appointsomeone to manage the business who isnot as close to the business as you are

GROWING PAINSOUR DREAM TEAM ADVISES ON WHEN AND HOW TO EXPAND YOURBUSINESS WITHOUT GETTING INTO DIFFICULTIES.

    www.ffb-online.co.uk

DEAR DREAMTEAMMy business plan seems to bea success orders are comingin, and if we expand any morewe will need bigger premises. But before I rush into things Iam trying to be realistic. Iknow many SMEs can end upone late payment away fromdisaster.

How do I know when its timeto take the plunge? Whereshould I go for advice abouthiring? And since I amplanning on expanding theteam further, how can Imanage my own changing role

  • DREAM TEAM

who can take over or assist you with theday to day running of the business.Likewise, as your business grows you willneed to think about creating specific rolesfor finance and accounts, HR andmarketing. As much as you would like tocontinue to try and do it all yourself, youwill not be able to do so.

KEVIN KERLEYCHAIRMAN, ACADEMYOF CHIEF EXECUTIVESIt sounds like your business is enjoyinggood growth and that is great news. Yourquestions on management of theexpansion are a natural concern that allsuccessful business leaders go through atsome stage. The key to helping youdecide on when the time is right toexpand the premises and the team isreally based around the cash flow and therestraints on delivery of your products orservices. Considering the headroom thatyou have in your cash flow beforeexpanding is always the key to ensuringthat you are not one late payment awayfrom disaster as you point out. On thisfront, I would suggest a meeting with youraccountant to look at forward orders andbudgets and produce a 12-month cashflow forecast which will highlight thepinch points and then give you a clearerpicture of when you are in the strongestposition to make a move, and alsowhether you need a further capitalinjection to fund the expansion. If this isthe case, then you can use the forecast toaid your conversations with the bank orother funders.

In terms of hiring, there is a wholeindustry of professional recruiters andhead hunters out there in themarketplace, I would seriously suggestthat you ask around and get arecommendation or two , as this is usuallya good indicator that you will get whatyou are looking for. The Sheffield cityregion is a great area for recruiting skills, and the talent is out there to be had, thehelp of a professional recruiter with greatprocess and contacts can make the wholeprocedure a lot more smoother andallow you to focus on your core activitywithout getting too distracted.

Finally, to manage your own changing roleand personal development, I wouldsuggest a few strategies that will assistyou to continue to be successful andahead of the curve as the business grows.

I would seriously recommend theservices of a good business coach andmentor. An experienced coach will beable to act as a great sounding board andgive you a different perspective on theissues that you face, help you to work onthe business instead of in it and give youfocus. I would also ask you to consider asuccession plan in terms of do you wishto move up and become more strategicas a CEO or chairman, in which case youshould start to consider developing anMD for the future, perhaps someonealready in the business or considerbringing someone in to take over theday-to-day operations and allow you thetime to focus on strategy and growing thebusiness. You might even consider joininga peer group such as the Academy, whichhelps with a holistic approach to businessleaders development, both personallyand as a leader.

It sounds like you are well on the way tohaving a very successful outcome and Ihope that you have found the DreamTeams advice to be helpful in movingforward. I wish you continued growth andprosperity.

LISA LEIGHTONPARTNER AT BARBER,HARRISON & PLATTWith any growing business comes avariety of growth pains. One of thosepains, as you quite rightly point out, is theneed to expand the team. Up until nowif you are a start-up business you mayhave been carrying out all roles yourself sales, operations, technical, HR, accountingto name but a few (in addition to makingtea and ordering stationery!). There isonly so far that you can grow yourbusiness if you continue to try and doeverything yourself. At some point you

will need to hire so that you canconcentrate on what you do best in yourrole and to continue to grow thebusiness. This is a major stepping stonefor any business owner as you have tolearn to delegate and to some extentletgo. One of the ways that you will knowthat it is time to recruit is that the existingworkforce will no longer be able to copewith the increased activity (ie there willnot be enough hours in the day!).

Before you do take the plunge and startto recruit it may be worthwhile in thefirst instance assessing at a high level whythere has been an increase in tasksrequired to be carried out by the team.Hopefully, it is as a result of increasedsales or opportunities but it may bebecause of inefficiencies in your currentprocesses which may be able to beabsorbed if the current team changes theway in which it works.

Assuming there is a requirement torecruit, there are many ways in which youcan find the right person. A key elementof getting the right person on board isbeing specific about the job role.Preparing a job spec is essential toattracting the right person for the role.Once you have that available there arenumerous ways to advertise the role, including on your website, using socialmedia (LinkedIn and Twitter for exampleare great ways to draw out candidates)or using a recruitment company whichspecialises in the area in which you arerecruiting.

Send your questions [email protected]. Name withheld on request

  • TEAM READYFOR THEHIGH JUMPSAttercliffe-based Wosskow Brown, one of the sponsors of theChatsworth Horse Trials for thesecond year running, has jumped tosupport amateur riders preparing tocompete against the best in the world atone of the most prestigious events in theequestrian calendar.

The Dodson & Horrell ChatsworthInternational Horse Trials, from May 15-17, offers three days of thrillingequestrian sport and familyentertainment to crowds of over 20,000.The gruelling equestrian triathlon seesriders from around the globe competingacross the three disciplines of dressage,cross-country and show jumping.

Three members of the nine-strong TeamWosskow Brown will be competing.Chesterfield based 19-year-old KatiePatrick, a university student who first got

in the saddle at the age of two, will beriding her thoroughbred Harry in theone-star class alongside fellow Team WBrider Sarah Healy, 42, of Bamford, whoworks as a dental hygienist in Bakewelland previously competed for GreatBritain.

Huddersfield eventer Hannah Taylor willbe taking a break from her job as afreelance horse groom to compete in theadvanced class on her horse Trilby. AndSally Wood of Matlock, a retired lecturerwho began eventing last year at the ageof 59, will be a jump judge at the Trials as well as serving as the WB teams Chef dEquipe.

Wosskow Brown ventured into theequestrian world last February when HRmanager Louise Brown realised that tenmembers of staff had a passion for horse-riding. Paralegal Annie Everard, whostarted at the practice as a 14-year-oldon work experience and is a keeneventer, is a member and driving force ofthe company team.

Louise Brown said: We dont know ofany other local law practice supporting anequestrian team. We wanted to getinvolved in the passion our staff have forthe sport and swiftly realised that while ata professional level there is lots ofsponsorship for eventers, at a localamateur level there is absolutely nothing.

Our long-term aim is to help localequestrians who are combining theirpassion for the sport with careers oreducation. We hope one day some ofthem may go on to achieve Olympicstatus.

Annie Everard added: Its a veryexpensive game; the upkeep and trainingof the horses, competition entry fees andtravel and transportation costs really addup. People assume horse-riders are fromprivileged backgrounds but many are notand those are the people WosskowBrown want to support.

After the teams Chatsworth Horse Trialsdebut in 2014, the law firm, which nowemploys 97 across four offices, has paidfor additional training and individualcoaching to improve skills and confidence.

Bio-veterinary sciences student KatiePatrick commented: The extra trainingwill definitely make a difference to ourperformance but so will the fact that wego into the ring with less financial worryon our shoulders. We will be aiming tomake our sponsors proud.

The team is now under the auspices ofWosskow Browns charitable foundation, launched in autumn 2014 to celebratethe firms 25th anniversary. TheFoundation supports business growth, charities, social enterprises and sportsclubs and individuals in sport fromgrassroots level.

As the owner of a new business, Amy is confident that SheffEX willprovide the ideal platform for meeting potential new clients andnetworking with other business people from the professional sector.

SheffEX will be an excellent opportunity for me to highlight thewealth management services I offer to company directors, said Amy.Working in financial services, there is a crossover with otherbusinesses such as accountancy companies and solicitors so theremay be potential to work together.

Face-to-face relationships are incredibly important to me and thisis the way I develop my client base. SheffEX event will allow potential clients to have a chat and get to know a littlemore about me before making any decision to proceed.

The price of exhibiting is really affordable for small businesses, even ones that are not yet established.I feel so confident that this event will be worthwhile for my company, I have already re-booked for December.

  • Exciting times are ahead for theSheffield and South Yorkshireregion. The much awaited re-development of Sheffield city centrefinally looks to be under way; works inDoncaster are on-going with theFinningley and Rossington regenerationand of course, the development of thenational High Speed Rail College.

Lots of re-development and investmentequals lots of opportunities for all typesof businesses in our region. Whateverkind of business you have, it is vital thatbefore entering into any businesstransaction that you take time tounderstand the fine print. For small tomedium businesses that are likely to feelthe greatest impact if things dont goquite to plan, there can be enormousbenefit in taking time to understand theeffects of these transactions.

Stacey Pocock, Head of Commercial andCivil Litigation at Best Solicitors, advisesAt the very least, small businesses andanyone new to the commercial arenashould obtain independent legal advicebefore entering into a contract. Thecontract could impose obligations orlimitations which could be costly to yourbusiness and once an agreement is

entered into, it can be very difficult andexpensive to walk away.

Entering into business transactions canalso impose statutory obligations onbusiness owners. For example, construction contracts may requireplanning laws to be complied withbefore a project can begin. Recentchanges to the Construction (Design &Management) Regulations 2015 meanthat business owners, users or managingagents having maintenance, small scale orminor building works carried out inconnection with a business have aresponsibility to ensure that the projectis planned effectively from the outset.

For commercial tenants, particularlythose who are taking out a lease for thefirst time and may not know much aboutthe legal implications, you must safeguardyour interests and ensure that the leaseis independently reviewed and any termswhich may be needed to protect yourrights as a tenant are included.

Stacey points out that unfortunately, it isnot uncommon for small businesses thatare understandably keen to keep costsand expenditure to a minimum to enterinto transactions without fully knowing

the implications, only to find at a laterdate, that it is going to be a costlyexercise to get out of or implement.

The benefits of having knowledge aboutthe implications of the transaction thatyou are entering into can help withbusiness planning, forecasting, creditcontrol and cash flow. Vital issues for anybusiness. Whilst no one can accuratelypredict the future and hindsight is a skillthat all business people wish theypossessed, forearmed is forewarned andfor a reasonable outlay, havingknowledge about the transaction thatyou are entering into can be thedifference between success and failure.

If you have a question about your businessor any property matter feel free to email Stacey directly [email protected]

  • There is no denying that the economyhas been through a difficult spell butconfidence appears to have beenrenewed and once again there issomething of a buzz in the air about thefuture of Sheffield.

Most recently, new plans were unveiled totransform the heart of the city centre. The new, vibrant retail quarter that wouldbe delivered by 2019 is a scheme that willservice modern retail demands and meetthe Councils vision for 2050.

The proposed 480 million scheme, designed by Leonard Design Architects, who have advised on some of Europesmost successful retail developments, comprises approximately 900,000 squarefeet of mixed use accommodation. Theproposed new scheme is predominantlyretail and leisure led, but also includesover 200,000 square feet of residentialand office space.

Simon Green, Sheffield City CouncilsExecutive Director Place, said: Thesenew plans provide an attractive newshopping district for Sheffield city centre.

The design merges with Sheffieldsaward-winning public spaces an
