As we approach the pinnacle of our stewardship campaign, have you thought about the amount of praise that God deserves from us? Music is a powerful medium through which God speaks to Kelly and me. Often, Kelly and I discern the will of God through the songs we sing in church. For instance, we sing about lifting our voices together in the traditional hymn: O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing. The first verse continues the thought of the title of the hymn: O for a thousand tongues to sing…my great redeemers praise…the glory of our God and King…the triumphs of His grace. In singing this song, we acknowledge that it takes a thousand tongues (voices) singing together to offer Him our praise.

We also sing about giving God our praise in a contemporary song titled: 10,000 reasons. The words of this song help us to reflect on the number of ways we can discover to praise God: For all your goodness I will keep on singing… 10,000 reasons for my heart to find. In singing this song, we acknowledge that there are at least 10,000 reasons for us to give God the praise that He deserves. Therefore, not only do we have an overabundance of reasons to praise God, but we also need thousands of voices joining together in order to give Him sufficient praise. God has indeed blessed us abundantly this year. As we review all that has happened here at FUMC, our hearts are challenged to envision what God has in store for us in the coming year.

Our financial contributions for 2013 will help our church move forward, but Kelly and I believe that the idea of contributing to the church is greater than the depths of our pocketbooks. Giving naturally includes our financial gifts, but it also includes our prayers, our presence, and our service. All four of these create the cornerstones that rest on God’s foundation in our lives at church. We believe that the financial gifts that Kelly and I can afford would be trivial if we didn’t also focus on the other cornerstones. Join us in prayer this week, as we ask for God to guide our hearts and minds in planning for our giving to our church in 2013.

Sunday, October 28, is Celebration Sunday, the day we come together as a thousand tongues to sing and celebrate what God has led us to do for our church in 2013. Some of you have already sent in your Estimate of Giving cards. If you have not, please remember to bring your card with you to worship Sunday morning when we will offer our cards in thankful anticipation of what the Lord will do for us in the coming year.

Kelly and I have been honored to serve as chairpersons of the Stewardship Campaign. We have been blessed by many as you have offered your encouragement and support to us.

Steven Hardy joined FUMC on Sunday, October 21, transferring from another denomination. John Yarbrough is his sponsor. Steve works for Kirklands in distribution. We joyfully welcome him into the church family!

One of the special attributes of longtime Jackson FUMC member Elsie Harris is her talented gift of needlepoint, knitting, crocheting and sewing. You’ll enjoy reading her heartwarming story below about this knitting ministry of love and all the joy it has brought so many.

Prayer Shawl Ministry by Elsie Harris

We began in 2004 with ladies knitting the first shawls. Today, 106 have been made and given out. Thirty-nine shawls have been shared with FUMC friends who are now deceased. The Prayer Shawl knitters initially met in the church library every Wednesday night. But, after a while, it became easier to knit at home. Some had never knitted before; others had knitted and pearled for years. One woman was not interested in knitting anything else because she just wanted to knit and not learn to pearl. And that, too, was ok!

A new wing was opened up at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital. The Jackson Sun ran a photo of the first patient to be moved into a new room and the lady pictured had her hand-knitted shawl across the foot of her bed. Another patient, who was dying with cancer, had been given a yellow shawl. When she had to be admitted to the hospital, she realized she had left her shawl at home. Her husband went back home to get it for her. At her funeral visitation, a narrow table was set up with her picture on one end, yellow roses on the other end with the urn in the middle and her yellow shawl draped around it. Even one man who liked his shawl so much had it buried with him.

Prayer shawls are made with much love and caring. Scriptures and prayers are said over each one as they are completed with an attached card letting the recipients know that it comes to them with the blessings of worship and love. When Ed Spencer attended

worship in the last couple of years of his life, many Sundays he was cold. On several Sunday mornings, someone would bring him a shawl from the storage closet at the church to take the “chill off” and provide warmth and comfort. Eventually with encouragement, he took one home.

Others have enjoyed using them around their shoulders while watching TV, over their legs while sitting in a chair or wheelchair or draped over a sofa or chair after their loved one has passed. Another shared that she was so proud of hers, she just caressed it. A family member of one shared that her mother took her handmade shawl with her when she went to a restaurant or other places away from home.

Over the years several FUMC members have shared their knitting talents for this ministry. Not only have they given of their time to lovingly knit these shawls but often they have spent their own money buying the yarn. There are a few who cannot or do not want to knit but who have donated money to be supportive.

To Elsie and all who have spread great joy and blessings through their beautiful handiwork and gifts of love, thank you!

My name is Katherine Currey Ryan. I have always lived in Jackson and was baptized at First United Methodist Church. I am a 6th grader at USJ. I cheer for the Bruins and take tumbling lessons. My hobbies are reading and baking cupcakes and cookies. My parents are Phillip and Carol and I have a little brother, John Carr. I have two dogs, Luka and Abbey, and a cat named Esther.

My name is Avery Gibson. I am twelve years old. My parents are Mary Beth and Greg Gibson. I was born in Asheville, North Carolina on June 25, 2000. I am in the 6th grade at St. Mary’s School. I love taking tennis lessons and also attending Pat Brown’s School of Dance. I am involved in the drama club and writers club at school. I love to draw, play on my iPad touch, and Wii games. THINK STEPHENRecently at a wedding in Nashville one of our members was approached by a woman who wanted to speak with her. The woman heard that our member had been through the pain of losing a loved one and had received care through this time. As they spoke, our member learned that this woman had lost her son several years ago but had not received the care she needed from her church or others. As a result, the grief still weighed heavy on her. Amazingly, our member serves as a Stephen

Minister. When she returned, she shared with me the name of the woman she’d met and asked if I knew of a church with an active Stephen Ministry near her. I did a quick search and found that she lived quite close to Brentwood UMC – a church with a very active Stephen Ministry. I contacted one of the pastors, and they promised to follow up and offer care. Stephen Ministry is not only for FUMC members. It is also not only for those going through grief. It is for all who are hurting in any way and who need to have a caring presence in their lives. Please “Think Stephen” when you hear of those who are hurting, and make sure and contact those who are here to help.
