Pentecost Sunday - May 27Wear Red as We Celebrate the Birthday of the Church! by Dan Camp
It has been called the “birthday of the Church.” Rev. Mary Beth Bernheisel will be preaching at both the 9 and 11 AM services. Please take time to read the text in advance as you prepare to worship: Acts 2:1-21. The message is entitled “Your Sons and Daughters Shall Prophesy.”
A crowd had gathered in Jerusalem. They were people who were from “every nation under heaven.” They spoke numerous languages. Suddenly, a mighty rushing wind blew through the place where they were assembled, “cloven tongues like as of fire” appeared and rested on each of them. Those present were filled with the Holy Spirit. Amazingly, they began to speak in languages not their own. Some suggested they were drunk with “new wine.” Peter, emboldened, rose to preach a brief and powerful sermon testifying to the power of the risen Nazarene—Jesus Christ.
On this day, over two thousand years ago, the church was born. Born of wind and fire. Come prepared to celebrate the birthday of the Church. As a sign that you understand the significance of this day, you are invited to wear an article of red clothing (tie, scarf, or other item). See you Sunday as we gather to celebrate! Don’t miss it... Happy Birthday Church!

Kids Who Care Club COW FOR SALEby Bobbie Mays
When it comes to “making a difference for others,” there is just no stopping 4th and 5th graders in “The Kids Who Care Club!” (KWCC) The Club’s purpose is all about missions. Last Fall, they completed a successful local project of making scarves for Area Relief Ministries. So, for their Spring fundraiser, with an international focus, they were more than eager to get started! Alyssa McLoughlin, Children’s Ministry Director and Shelby Henson, Intern, helped them explore various possibilities at their monthly Sunday evening meetings. Through research, studying and discussion, the kids figured out exactly what they wanted for their mission project which began on March 11th. Buying a cow for $500 through Heifer International to send to a family in need was the one! So, how did these 9 and 10 year olds raise so much money on their own?
The KWCC first had a “Name the Cow” contest. With lots of conversation and brainstorming about what the three names would be, the kids chose Maggie Moo, Ruth and Mary Beth. Plans were finalized and it was time to kick off fundraiser #1. Each Sunday, church members were invited to stop by their display table to donate money to their favorite cow name. As people walked through the main lobby, eyes were drawn to the large jars labeled with the names. A chart of a gallon jug indicating how much had been collected was also part of the display. The contest generated a lot of interest and chuckles as the winner was announced from the pulpit as none other than Mary Beth! Of course, FUMC’s Associate Pastor, Mary Beth Bernheisel, was beaming!
With a successful $200 earned from the first contest, more money was still needed to reach their goal. Fundraiser #2 was a “Heifer Quiz Question.” A fun fact board was added
to the same display table with questions to test our knowledge of cows.” Everyone was encouraged to guess the correct answer by putting money in the jar they thought was the right answer. Contestants were challenged by questions such as “A dairy cow produces how many gallons of milk every year” or “What is the average speed a cow can run?” Answers were announced the following week in the newsletter and bulletins. Excitement continued to build as the jug on the chart filled up! The kids could readily see how much had been donated and how much remained to reach their goal of $500.
On Saturday, May 5, the Kids Who Care Club traveled to the Heifer International Headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas. There they learned more about third world countries and what they could do to help end world hunger. They discovered how animals, trees and honeybees could help provide a family the foundation they need to begin improving the family’s income and nutrition. They also were made aware of the training for sustainable farming that those families receive through the work of Heifer International.
More determined than ever to buy “Mary Beth the Cow,” on the following Sunday, Fundraiser #3 was begun with a Bake Sale. Assorted goodies were colorfully decorated, packaged, priced, displayed and sold by the “Kids.” While their original plan had been to allow for two more Sundays of bake sales, by the end of Sunday May 6, the last $180 had been raised!
Alyssa is quite proud of this awesome group of kids. She is also pleased and grateful for the extra commitment required of the parents’ time and energy. Parents saw this not only as an opportunity for their children to learn about service, but to be actively involved and supportive as they talked to them about their project, working together on this mission effort. The Kids Who Care Club…a great bunch who are growing in their faith as they serve others through Christ!
